View Full Version : English, Why do we love it?

I am so stuck. I cannot contain how much I love the written expression of my critical response whilst reading and understanding literature. I find it quite easy to babble on about how much I loved or hated a piece of literature, but found it immensly difficult when I was faced with the task of writting why we love literature and what drives us to read and analyse. I thought I would find this to be of no challenge, but when your trying to write concisely and accurately, I cannot find the words to describe litertaure. How ironic.
Any help would be warmly appreciated.

Other than we must? I would say it's something to do with escapism and imagination, but at the same time it can be relating a piece of literature to the reader's own circumstances - it depends on what the piece of literature is. Think of literature as more sophisticated television.

I completely agree, but WHY do we read and write and love literature in the way we do. Escapism and imagination contribute to the desire, but these are only short term feelings that do not explain why people dedicate their lives to understanding the compassion of literature.

Good point. Imagination is something that you tend to lose as you get older (arguably) authors presumably manage to hold on to a great deal of their's, maybe it's a longing to reconnect with something lost.....though i've just defeated my own argument because children still read and love to read at that.

Maybe to put it simply, it's a source of comfort. Heaven knows, i'm so confused. If you do come up with anything better or more conclused, I would love to hear it.

Theoretically you are asking a question as complex as what is the meaning of life? Why do we do anything?

Haha your best bet is to not allow confusion...just enjoy it, don't busy yourself asking why something is when instead you should just be greatful that it is!

Ha, perhaps your right.

Maybe you could write a book about your thoughts...or could that just possibly confuse things even more?

I love English because it is a language which most of the people in the world can understand and speak. It also offers a number of good stories and novels.
I don't understand why the topic title asks about English but then they're talking about something else

Ditto, Koa.
And any language can often referr to literature.
Ah.
I thought it referred to the English language, I mean if I don't add "literature" I don't think I'm referring to literature... ;)
