Driving me nuts! It begins with C, a woman who was a companion and friend of Joyce, she lived with him for a time, there was a biography written about her, and either a TV documentary or a movie was made from it. HELP!

Nora Barnacle ,she was a clingy type.

Thanks for your response, but the name of the woman I am thinking of begins with a C, I'm pretty sure, and I don't think she was married to Joyce. She was rather wild, had affairs while she was living with Joyce, she wasn't portrayed as clingy at all. I don't know if this affair preceded the marriage or during or ???
If you still think it was his wife, give me an argument--I could be wrong, it's been many years since I saw that documentary/movie.

I think you must mean the Barnacle .....they didnt marry until 1930 .....sorry, I was making a flippant joke about her limpet name .She was rather bohemian. Google her.

:) OK (I almost asked you if you were joking!), I'll do that. I've got that "C" lodged in my head though. Did he not have other affairs?

To be sure .Haven't you notice that even today Irish men dont marry until late in life .
I think its to do with the grip of the Church ,or maybe primogeniture. Its still a very male dominated culture.

I've never been to Ireland and in fact don't even know anyone from there (I'm in Arizona USA), but I've gotten exactly that impression from various things. So I'll just enjoy the music and the beautiful way of speaking and leave the men alone.

maybe you're thinking of Emma Clary, who's SD's childhood sweetheart in Portrait? The nearest the adult JJ got to having an affair was with Marthe Fleischmann in in Zurich, though he was half in love with his Triestine student as depicted in 3Giacomo Joyce".

By the wat, Penelope, you're clearly not Irish if you think Ireland's male-dominated - the entire work and consumer culture is geared towards meeting women's needs (and desires). Men are very lost and neglected tribe indeed, I can assure you ;)
