Recently I was reading one of Thomas Merton's journals and found this assessment of Emily. Reading her is like 'hugging an angel'. I pass this on because some of you might have heard of this author otherwise known as Fr. Louis, OCSO. He was one of the mentors of my youth (I was in the Trappists for about four years with him as my spiritual director.)

His assessment caused my wife and I to go visit her home in Amherst during our trek north for a vacation. It was a most wonderful visit and I mentioned Merton's comment to one of the guides and am hoping this dictum is repeated in her home.

I have always known of Emily but had not read much of her poetry. At times I find her most amazing and at others I am stymied. Which is the best guide through some of her more difficult poems or is there any such thing?
