Last night an authour came to my library. Janice M--- lovley lady wrote a book about her life and the town she grew up in , Which by the way is stupidly not available in that town or any of the near by towns in effact you have to cross into staffordshire to get hold of it or be in austraila the as she lives in Adelaide (sp??)
Anyway So her book is a series of short stories ( autobiographical but quite funny in a James herriott kind of way) but back to the point is a friend of hers wrote a poem to go with everry story in the book but he put then in under a ( cant spell it and spell checher isnt helping) pretend name-- I know an alias. anyway he was there too and so I asked hime Because got to say Ive always been curious about it:
What is there to stop someone else from claiming to be Ryan C------- ( a complex unspelleble irish name with funny letters) and he said he didnt know and he had never thought bout it.
so my q is this does anyone here know?? My curiosity has got the better of me.
EDIT : should this be in this forum??? Mods fee free to move it :D:D

Unless the person's name really is Ryan C---, it is a "crime" (or an offense at least) and can be prosecuted. If the person's name is indeed "Ryan C--" and he acts as though he were the one Ryan C. that wrote those poems, he can be punished too.
In Austria we have laws against that. I don't know what it's like in England, but I'd say it has to be pretty similar.

Interesting. Or do you mean, if it is commonly known that Mr. Poet wrote under an pen name, what would happen if Mr. Fake claimed he was the poet who wrote under the pen name?

yes, yes but how would they prove that as RJ put it MR fake isnt Mr Poet?

That's a matter of evidence. Simply put, Mr Poet would have to prove that he wrote the poems and nobody else. For example, poets often keep the draft of their works. That would be good evidence.

In my case, since I write under pseudonyms, or my initials, I have the originals. They could be tested and found to be that old, and the papers have my fingerprints all over them. Or my computer documents are stamped with the date by the computer when they are created. I back them up to a jump drive. ;)

what if you don't have handwritten originals, only computer documents? how can you prove in court that you didn't download them or something?

I don't know much about computers but I believe that can be proven somehow. In the computer different versions of documents do exist. I know that because I once deleted all my documents and my brother still managed to find almost every single one - though with different versions.

ok.. cool :)
what about copyright law in general.. i've heard different versions:
1. whoever writes a piece of lit automatically owns the copyright
2. you have to pay a fee and register at some office to get your work protected
is it different in diff countries?

The 1.version is practised in the internet as far as I know. For example, on fanfiction sites.
The second version is practised outside the internet. The registration though doesn't keep on forever. You've got to renew it after a certain amount of time.
