View Full Version : Sea Or Mountains?

I was reading Agatha Christie's Autobiography in which she states:

"There!" said father, 'See? There are the Pyrenees. The snow mountains.'
I looked. It was one of the disillusionment that I have never forgotten. Where was the soaring height going up, up into the sky, far above my head-something beyond contemplation or understanding? Instead, I saw, some distance away on the horizon, what looked like a row of teeth standing up, it seemed about an inch or two from the plain below. Those, were those mountains? I said nothing but even now I feel the disappointment.
When I visited the mountains for the first time, I also had a feeling similar to Agatha, but I liked them though they were not as good as I expected them to be.

But when I visited Sea, I liked it ten times better. One can feel the tides, it's like the sound of music. The coming and going of tides is like playing of Guitar or Piano or any musical instrument. I love Sea. I miss Sea! Heh, I want to live in the Sea. What if I would have been a Fish or a Mermaid? I wonder, wouldn't it have been great? :D

What about you guys? What do you like more, mountains or sea?

It depends on my mood, I guess. I'm more receptive by the sea, more able to pick up on other's notions and ideas. I read near the sea. I play in the sea. I meet friends by the sea. I boat on the sea. It's a social place for me.

The mountains, I think, are more for my "me time." I write better up there, I feel more creative. I want to be heard rather than listen to the rantings of others. I listen to sounds without really listening to them...they are just background noise while I wait for my muse to be snagged in one of the traps I've set, lol...

How fortunate for me, to have always have had both of these places nearby. Living in California, and then here in St. Thomas...

Mountains are beautiful, can't deny that but they also give me a sense of claustrophobia, I feel kind of hemmed in whereas the sea makes me feel completely open and such a sense of freedom. I can stand the mountains and their majesty for a day but I don't think I could ever live by them...but the sea...I could live there forever and never tire of the sound of the waves or walking along the beach or the feel of the water on my toes, so I would have to say, for me, it would have to be the sea.

Yep, you are lucky! By train, Sea is sixteen hours away and mountains are eight hours away from where I live.

I actually feel the same thing near the sea. It is like, you are free and you fly. You feel the waves on your toes and it is such a good feeling! I will give a lot to live near sea, man!!!

I can hardly choose between the two, both of which I love. Whenever I wander about nature, I instantly feel my spirits lift, often go into deep reflection, and admire everything from nearby leaves falling from a tree to fantastic viewpoints stretching for miles.
For the mountains, I love the hiking, the aesthetic views, often spotted wildlife, and the peacefulness. Yet, as for the sea, I love the hushing sound of winds and waves, the quality of air you breathe, and views from the shoreline (note: I have a horrible fear of water, hence I love the sea only while not getting into it :D).
In essence, I cannot really separate the two. In my opinion, all nature compliments itself; if no sea existed (imagine that!), the mountains may not appear as beautiful, having no comparison, and vice versa - thus I find it with all nature - everything on a grand scale and minute details.

Mountains PWN sea.

I love to look at snow-capped mountains from a distance, when the fog is just lifting and they sky behind them becomes deep blue. But I think I prefer the sea...wading, swimming, going out on high rocks that overlook it and waiting for waves to dash up.

Well, I live very close to the mountains so the sea makes a nice change. The sea sort of sends me into a hypnotised state! Then again, you don't get snow at the sea. The sea is also quite intimidating, don't you think? I mean if you think about it, you are this one little being standing in front of a HUGE expanse of water!

I L-O-V-E the mountains, the air is so fresh & they make you feel so big! I especially like it when it snows!

Oh snow, it is one of my big wishes to see snow. I have seen it only in tv and read about it in books but I am quite sure it must be great!

I think many of you know my preference. Growing up going to the beach everyday, I got water logged. And I've already had to treat a pre-cancerous spot on my skin. I love visiting my parents in North Carolina because of the excuse to go to the mountains. I love driving on the winding roads (Leo can't do it because he wants to look at the view and dosen't turn the car with the road!) and like Pensive, I've been snow deprived. But my favorite time is in the Fall. There seems to be walls of color everywhere and there is no smell quite like that of burning leaves! Mmmm! Someone get me a hammock! :D

REVIVED!

I think I like the mountains better, even though it is a very hard choice. I love the peace and quietness of the mountains. I love the animals found there and the snow too. It's beautiful and breath taking.

The choice is not complicated for me, as I really dislike the sea and I absolutely love mountains!
I don't know why I dislike the sea, maybe because I don't find the landscape appealing, and because everytime I went there, I got so bored. Moreover, I am scared of the sea, this wide surface of dark waters...:cold: :cold: :cold:

I find mountains wonderful, I love the landscapes, I love the purity of the air, I love the solitude and peace that one can feel there. I love the beauty of it.:)

I live ten minutes walk away from the sea and i'm not that far from the mountains, So what i like is standing on top of a mountain (or the head of a penninsula, looking out to sea.
For example;
This is standing on top of Howth Head, looking down at the sea and Dublin Bay.

Haha, the mountains and the sea! Wonderful thought, Niamh!!!

That is such an amazing photograph...

I am so tied to the land; I would love the sea but perhaps mainly as an asset of the land.

I am going to have to see that land. I remember one chess Grandmaster, Alex Baburin, he was from Dublin.

I work on the sea, but I prefer the mountains...so, do I really have to choose?

I feel nostalgic. I want to see sea badly, but there seem to be no chances for such a trip. :(

You are never more than a few hours from the sea here in Ireland, and the country is full of mountains, many of which are close to the sea.:) My favourite spot is up in the cooley Mountains, looking out over the Irish sea and Carlingford loch as well. Some times you can glimpse the Isle of Man. Its where the Tain is Based.
Chess Grandmaster? I dont follow chess but Ireland is full of people who specialise in things like chess.
Here is a view from the cooleys looking across the countryside(curtisy of photobucket)

And what do you think Agatha Christie, the writer I quoted, was? French? Or had she no love for her backbones? :p

I'll have to say mountains, because although I like looking at the sea, I don't like being in it. However, the sea and the mountains do look rather picturesque together.

I like that picture, Niamh. Nice living on mountains surrounded by sea but still one would be on the mountain, she/he wouldn't be able to feel sea-tides. :(

Hmmm. Proof? :p

Well...one could sit at the foot of a mountain and also be by the edge of the sea.
