View Full Version : current musical obsession

I go through these phases where I'll listen primarily to one artist or type of music. For example, I went through a serious grunge phase not too long ago and all I listened to was Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season and Stone Temple Pilots. From there I moved on to The Shins and that led me to the Garden State Soundtrack and that led me to Iron and Wine, Nick Drake and Zero 7, I refer to that as my 'Garden State' phase. From Iron and Wine, I developed a minor interest in folk music with The Wood Brothers, Wailin' Jennys, Michelle Shocked and 10,000 Maniacs. Now I've done a 180 and moved on to Queens of the Stone Age and have listened to little else in the last week or so. This phase hasn't been quite so exclusive as is typical because of all the uploading I've been doing but when I have a choice in music, it's always Queens of the Stone Age.
Do you guys have these musical obsessions from time to time? Do you get stuck in a particular groove where you don't want to listen to anything but one artist or type of music and if so, tell me what your current musical obsession is.

Oh my goodness, my current obsession was Backstreet Boys - Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely. (don't you laugh) I kept on listening the song in Karachi...maybe I was lonely because I was away from my mother, computer, home...
I don't think so that I like this song very much...even Westlife is better than Backstreet Boys but I don't know why, I kept on listening the song during my whole trip...
Currently Bad Religion and the Dropkick Murphys, simply because they are on their way here in September!!

yep, I've got a 60s phase at the moment
thank God there's free internet radio
I don't really have music obsessions when listening to music, I usually listen to things randomly. My obsessions come with what song I've chosen next to learn on my harp. Lately I'd had to force myself to obsess over Dumbo. I played a baby shower last week and the future grandmother requested Baby Mine. That was tough! I had to come up with my own arrangment and I just barely got it ready on time. But I did well. Now my obsession is Irish jigs I want to learn one to create a medley with two others I already know.

Oh, I love The Shins, Idril!
Right now I'm really into a band called Paramore. There is never a time when I am tired of Eisley. A friend just gave me a few mix CDs and I'm really liking that....tons of emo/indie/oldies stuff.
I also love the Corpse Bride soundtrack. Not the singing, just the piano part. Any soundtrack I'm bound to enjoy somewhat.

Oh, come on! You admit to being obsessed with a Backstreet Boys song and then say we can't laugh, that's not even fair. ;) :p
Oh, I love The Shins, Idril!
You know, the first time I heard them, I was wasn't overly impressed, just mildly interested but after a few listens I decided they were one of the greatest bands ever. I was first drawn to their slower songs, Those To Come, Pink Bullets and the Past and Pending but the rest of it really grew on me.

It kinda sounds like pizza and ice cream, but currently it is The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Third Day. If you guys don't know who Third Day is, they are a Christian band. And well, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are not - pizza and icecream.

Oh I love RHCP's song "Californication." Man, I am obsessed with it!

I was also on a Alice in Chains kick not too long ago,but right now I'm primarily listening to Angelo Badalamenti, who does all the composing for the David Lynch films.

Hey Pensive - I just got RHCP's new album - 28 songs, so I guess that is kind of why I am obsessed right now!!

I love the song "New Slang." Pink Bullets is good too...those are actually the only ones I've really heard.
Recently I went through a Rebecca St. James obsession phase....I still love her but I'm not constantly listening to her new CD now.
I've never heard of most of these groups. The last CD I got was The Chieftains. I guess you could say I was obsessed with them for a while. Especially when I heard them play Brian Borou's March. I realized I had been playing it wrong!
In classical music, I tend to have a steady obsession with two particular composers: Frédéric Chopin and Tchaikovsky, though my obsession with Claude Debussy comes and goes, too.
In other styles of music, obsessions with Nick Cave & The Badseeds appear and re-appear now and then, and also with Radiohead, Björk, REM, Mono (the British, not the Japanese band; and no, this has no affiliation with my screen-name), Azure Ray, and Tears For Fears.

My kids are obsessed with him as well, we just went on a trip and we got our fill of Living in the Fridge and Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota (a personnal favorite of mine) and many, many more. When I listen to those songs, I'm really stuck by how truly talented that guy is. He's funny, of course, but he's also able to adapt to any type of music or vocal style and make it sound good. I think he's often just written off as a one trick pony as far as comedy goes but he's actually incredibly muscially talented as well.
Old Indian movie songs.
Oh, and Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne.'

Interesting variations there. I'm basically into what I call "pop jazz" or, okay, smooth jazz as they say. It's not real jazz. For instance, the incredible song -- "Galaxy" by Hippiehaus.
On the other hand, I recently talked with the bassist for a group returning from the 80's called "Sass to West." They're trying to make a comeback. I was given a CD to yet listen to. I was a Beatles fan vs. the Stones (only like their "Angie") but "School of Rock" showed me how to appreciate rock music.

Chicago -- the band, not the musical.

Chicago is nice, I heard them on the radio today performing with Al Green, It was one of his songs, There was a story about the song, but I also had to pay attention to work, so I didn't get all of it, but it was a nice change from the regular crap I hear on the radio. :D
Epica. Been for a few days ;)

I'm kind of rediscovering The Knack right now. I was a huge fan when their first album came out, I played the ...heck out of it at the time but I don't think I've listened to it for a good 15/20 years but something made me think of them so I downloaded the disc ( I still have the album, but it's a tad bit useless without a record player) and I'm having a great time reliving this particular musical obsession. I don't think I would be so impressed if I was hearing them for the first time now but it does bring back a lot of good memories.

At the moment I'm kind of skipping around to all sorts of different things.
Imogene Hepa's songs "Hide and Seek" and "Headlock" are really good.
I've a bit of an obsession with Carrie Underwood's song "Young and Beautiful" at the moment...it makes me want to get up and dance! It's hilarious.
Weird Al's song "You're Pitiful" is a favorite now also. I heard it for the first time a week ago, and in my old band we had this big joke about James Blunt's song, so I really enjoy this.

After looking through my dad's music collection I found a dusty old Split Enz tape.
I listened to it. Then I listened to it again. And again. And again. I've been missing out! Every song on the tape is perfect.

I often get very obsessed about a band/song and get heavily into it for a while....
My biggest ones these days are:
Baustelle, an Italian band to whom I've been addicted for a few months already, but I keep listening to them anyway... they're not very famous but they have nice sound and witty lyrics, even if sometimes they seem a bit nonsense...
The Organ, a Canadian band about whose existence I found out online, they have a great sound that reminds of The Cure, actually a bit too much but I like them even if they are maybe too similar...
Okean Elzy (especially a few songs), the most popular Ukrainian band, they have some nice songs

I've lately been listenting to parts of Beethoven's Ninth and Fifth nearly every day for almost two months. When I am listening to contemporary music, and have time for longer songs, I indulge in a bit of Dream Theater and occasionally Opeth (though the latter can be a trifle depressing sometimes). Also, since Nightwish's goddess-of-a-vocalist was kicked out, I have been listening to a lot of them, crying a bit, reminiscing 'bout the days of old (yes, my friend, with "that old-time rock and roll").

Mary J. Blige. I can't stand the version of U2's "One" she sings. It's awful.
I'm now obsessed with Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line". After watching the film. I sing it to myself the whole time (nobody else wants to listen).

I agree. It's even scary how they could ruin it. But doesn't she sing it with them, or with Bono? Shame on them! ;)

Muse it is, I love their new album, it's really good, with some interesting songs
And yes I absolutely loathe the Mary J. Blige version of ONE, what was U2 thinking???? Bah, cheap artists thinking they can ruin a great song because it's easy money. Yes, I am referring to a lot of hip-hop artists that use samples. and add nothing but mindless drivel about how they shoot themselves in the arse.
LOL Aimus.
I heard the new single from Muse and was amazed about how new it sounds, I mean their previous stuff had started to sound all alike to me...

For the past few years I've found myself in an cycle that begins with Radiohead, Modest Mouse, and Bjork, then moves to Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Buck Owens, then on to The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and anything on the Trainspotting soundtracks--and back to the first three. I don't know why those last three seem to fit together so well for me. Other things are interspersed in there of course, but those are the definite phases that I've noted.

Yes, Indeed, the new album is quite different, still very much recognisable as muse, but is a bit lighter on the content. Not as dark and apocalyptic as the previous albums.

Supermassive Black Hole is probably the most unusual track on the new album, but as a whole Black Holes & Revelations shows quite a big change in direction. I'm always in a permanent Muse phase - I love them to bits. I'm looking forward to seeing them live again later this year.

Indeed, she does sing it with Bono, and the rest of the band is accopmanying them. Actually Word magazine put this, this "performance" in the top 20 worst duets. I hate this version, but I hate U2 more for letting her sing their best song. :crash:

I don't know enough about Pink Floyd to say if you're right, but it's possible.
