Why was revenge necessary and beneficial in Edmond's case?

I had two ideas. One, it helped him get through his suffering. His plan to destroy those who tried to kill him made him survive prison. Second, he studied languages, history, philosophy, physics, chemistry, etc. This was very beneficial to him as a human being in pursuit of vengeance.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Tho he did gain in those ways when it came to his revenge...did his 'being alive' really gain? Did he really require to get revenge on those that had harmed him....or could he have gotten out of prison and still gone off and lived a happy life? Would escape not have been reward enuf at that point?? To a degree the thought of getting revenge would have helped him stay alive...but one need remember that he had required the priest to work out who/wot had happened to him. I cant remember exactly how long he had been there prior to meeting the priest...but his will to live had been there for years before he had even really known wot had happened to him. Since he couldnt read, he may have thought that the letter he was given was the only thing that put him in prison as it was the only thing that made any sense to him at the time. TEven if he had known he was set up....he hadnt known by whom. Being someone who would have never sunk so low as to treat another person as he was treated...its possible that he wouldnt even have considered it. Perhaps too...if he hadnt had had the money that he had, he would have had to find another way of getting thru his pain. After all...no vengence could have been played out any sweeter had he not had such wealth to let him back into the sphere that he had been outst from. So if he had not had the money revenge may well not have even been possible...and then life would have had to go on in any case.

I woud say that the biggest thing he gained was his friendship with the priest. Not just coz he learnt where great wealth was, and not just coz he learnt to read etc....but by being able to relate with another person...esp after all those years. Wot a truely maladjusted man he would have been had he not been able to practice his social skills for so long. How very weird he would have appeared to society upon his release, then no form of revenge or normal life would have been possible. I believe that with his friendship with the priest he was able to keep alive his ABILITY to live a normal life afterwards and that that was the greatest asset he gained. Another thought is that perhaps the THOUGHT of revenge gave him strength in prison...but once out, did he REALLY need to act upon those thoughts to gain peace/to re-set up his life?? Therefore...I am not convinced that revenge was necessary in Edmonds life! To think that to say that it is, is to say that it is necessary in all of ur lives...and yet many get thru very painful things without need for even the entertainment of revenge.

I think revenge was necessary for Edmond, I don't think he'd've been able to find peace, even after escaping D'if. It's not so much that thoughts of revenge allowed him to survive in prison, but it became his reason for living period, having lost everything he ever loved. What could a man like Edmond Dantes want with money? He never needed wealth to be happy, he was content with his simple life, his friends, and his fiancee.

After ascending aristocracy and becoming the Count, he started softening. Mercedes, Albert, Maximilian, all started to dull the wrath and hatred of Edmond. The poor Count tried so hard to distance himself from the others, to keep his loathing burning its bright, fiery inferno, but he knew it was slipping and he despaired. He held so tightly onto his hatred that the idea of it dispersing terrified him at first -- his desire for revenge was his whole life, if it was gone he would break down into nothing, he would have no purpose.

revenge was necesary in the life of the count..because he lost everything he love..and because what his enemies did couldn.t have been forgoton..let us thing...Villefort wasn.t actually the best man..he was actually a bad person..who for his position was able to kill ,emprison(not only Dantes..anyway he condamed Dantes because he wanted to have a biger function and because of Nortier his father..)..also Danglars was a miser, and Fernand a traitor....so these pepople didn.t hurt only Dantes but many other persons...so the novel has perfectly sense......I love this book a lot.....because I myself must revenge on some people..even if these people didn.t hurt me..but just the person that I love the most in this life..but this is no excuse for them..they must suffer...and they will..

For you to want revenge of those that hurt the person you love...u are keeping the pain/problem going for that one that you love. Lets say u acheive revenge...is that meant to make up for the loss your love had? Is it meant to make her feel better that you took revenge...especially if it is of risk to you getting in trouble (perhaps even legal trouble?). Would it help her to have you in prison? Would it help her to trust u implicidly if she knows u are capable of "Revenge"..which in most ppl would have to cause a vision of 'ugliness'...not something to be proud of in reality.

Your aiming at getting revenge for your love means that you are leaving her stuck in a place where she cant move forward..coz she has to feel even worse coz she knows that her pain has been passed onto you.

Instead of feeding 'negativity' in the life of you as well as her...how about you add some 'positivity' into both ur lives by 'moving on'!!
