it's been a while since I've read O. Henry and Maupassant short stories. I remember "Hearts and Hands", "Two Friends", "The Piece of String" and this one story about a French woman who infects a whole bunch of Prussian soldiers with some disease.

what are some good stories by these authors?

Ah, two of my favorite short story authors!
I feel slightly more familiar with O. Henry (even making it through a 1,600-page book of his complete works :D), and a few that I remember: 'The Gift Of The Magi' (a classic, and the most well known), ' "girl," ' 'The Third Ingredient,' and 'The Higher Abdication.'
With Guy de Maupassant, I have not read as much as I would prefer, but I remember really enjoying (and it may depend on the translation of titles) 'The Necklace,' 'Clair de Lune,' and 'A Queer Night In Paris.'
Of course, if you really enjoy O. Henry and Maupassant, I have no doubt you would also enjoy the short stories of Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce (and perhaps Ursula le Guin and Flannery O'Connor) - all authors of very whimsical, adventurous, and fulfilling plots! :nod:

I definitely remember that short story, indeed; Twain wrote many, many short stories, however, and very worth reading, in my opinion.
I always liked stories of his like 'The Diary Of Adam And Eve,' 'A Dog's Tale,' 'The Notorious Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County' (a popular one), and 'The Mysterious Stranger.'
As for Ambrose Bierce, many people may feel familiar with 'An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge' - an amazing short story! If you get time, too, a book of Bierce's called The Devil's Dictionary has many funny cynical puns and odd definitions; I started a thread of it here (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12641&highlight=Devil%27s+Dictionary) some time ago, if you want some 'sample' definitions.

and I've read some bits (here and there) of The Devil's Dictionary

I love The Devil's Dictionary...can't imagine how Bierce came up with each definition
