This is probably an odd question, but to those who have read both authors, whom do you consider more challenging [however you wish to define "challenging"]?
Though your question applies to people who have read both authors, I have only read very little Marcel Proust, but almost everything by James Joyce (everything except Ulysses). Despite my inexperience with Proust, I cannot neglect mentioning some of the immense difficulty and challenge with reading some Joyce works, especially Finnegans Wake; I have no doubts of his great intelligence, and wide foundation of knowledge, but all of his works require at least some research to understand (Dubliners and A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man).
