Pandemonium

Taxies ferry a multitude across
The deep and timorous asphalt Styx.
Buses swollen with blind cargo,
Drudge up ever more forgetful souls
To wear away the fragile bricks;
A crumbling, metropolitan Bedlam...

Of cars rolling out of sea-worn shells
Crossing oceans to pay the tolls.
Planes scream at the sky; restless tombs.
Trains struggle against howling winds,
Lost in tunnels of encroaching gloom;
A brutal, chaotic din, a pandemonium...

your metaphor with the road and the river in hell is very interesting and i like it. i also like the way you describe the hecticness of transportation and everyday life in big cities. but what is the cargo (people) blind to? this pandamonium that you speak of? although i do not understand a few lines in the poem perhaps you can explain them to me but from what i do understand this is a very good poem. nice job! :)

Thanks. Pandaemonium is the capital of Hell and the name for Satan's palace in Paradise Lost by John Milton. I use the word pandemonium as in a generally chaotic and noisy place (but not a particular place) at the end of the poem. As for the blind cargo, I was refering to the souls at the banks of the river Styx in greek mythology that are blind and forgetful because the river Styx drains their memories. The weird thing is I really love big cities.

Anyway, I hope that made sense though I doubt it did. :D
