I like Ashley-because he is an honorable person
Melanie-because she is a very good person
Charles Hamilton-because he loves very much Scarlett and he is a good person
Stuart and Brent-because they are very funny characters

I like Scarlett because she has a little of everything, she can be mean (most of the time though), she can be good (she took care of her family in the time of crisis), she was smart (not good looking, but knew how to carry herself). She did not portray one constant character and had all shades, unlike others who were wither only good (Ashley or Melanie) or not so good.

Rhett Butler, for the charming, unscrupulous rogue that he is. How can you not admire someone like that?

Rhett -- he has an incisive knowledge of human nature that I admire.

I think I would still prefer only Scarlett. Her character is very strong, I think people like her exist and chances of finding people like Ashley and Melanie are very rare (atleast I have not come across someone like them). Also, Scarlett makes an interesting character to know and understand, as there are so many facets to her personality. I would like to know more about such characters. As for Ashley or Melanie, I would know that they are always good and under any given situation they would only do good. But for Scarlett, I would be looking forward to what she does in a particular circumstance. Maybe I would like to vote for Rhett (he is charming, smart, experienced), and his personality is as interesting as Scarlett.

There was a sequeal actually written. I forgot the name of it and I can't remember the author's name, but it came out within the last 10 years.

you're probably talking about SCARLETT by Alexandra Ripley.

EDIT: Nuts, too slow.

I like Rhett Butler as well. As far as character building goes, I think he is the most interesting one of all. The other ones seem to respond to stereotypical images and their behavior seems predictable somehow. Rhett is the only one who seems to be and think "outside the southern box".

and I should add that, under the mask of irony that he keeps all along the book, he hides a very rare sensibility. ;)

I like Ashley. He´s a dreamer but he adapts to the sad reality in a very honourable way, same as Melanie, without selling their soul to the devil, as Scarlett and Rhett do. They might not be exciting characters as Scarlett and Rhett, but they are very strong in their own way.

I voted for Scarlett as favorite character, mostly because of her spirit and nerve. She was not a typical woman of the times. And while her methods were not of the best...um, how shall I say it...they were not strictly honorable, ;) she protected her family, even the members of the family that strongly disapproved of her and even hated her at some points. That takes courage and yes selflessness. She could have left them behind in her dust, but didn't.
I have to admire that.

But I loved Melly too and Mammy was the best.
Who could not like Rhett. :D
Nobody has mentioned...oh now I can't recall the name....the Madam that loved Rhett and saved Rhett and Ashley's lives from the Yankee soldiers...?

of course Scarlett O'Hara, she is a very complex character, that has a bit of everything ,very interesting to be discovered and to know what she is thinking of or how she is going to act next.. a character u can never forget

I love Rhett - charming, intelligent, rich, able to see right through people and a rebel - what's not to love? I like Scarlett to because she always did what she had to do to ensure her survival and that of her friends and family and she was smart and nasty and in a way, totally adorable. And Melly because she's so completely sweet. I don't like Ashley. To me he basically seems spineless and he never loved Scarlett, he loved Melanie, and yet he wouldn't tell Scarlett he didn't love her and kept leading her on.

Prissy. She is the only one who always knows just what she is feeling and why!
