Your question is quite general, could be answered either way! yes/no for many countries in the world.. maybe you can glean some info from the CIA World Fact Book page on SA:

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/sf.html

Or this Energy Information Administration site which has a large section on Electricity:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/safrica.html

"Parastatal company Eskom, one of the largest utilities in the world, generates nearly all of South Africa ’s electricity."

I don't have the facts, but let's elaborate a bit: What kind of a problem? I would also assume that electricity is not a problem anywhere, unless you happen to find yourself in an electric chair. ;) Lack of electric power on the other hand, could pose a major problem, and so could insufficient or unstable (fluctuating) supply. You may also be able to produce enough power but be unable to transfer it to the users due to an inferior power network.

hum,.. you seem to be from South Africa? so why not check the newspapers or weeklies... maybe you can have a look at the back issues at a library...
or try an online edition of a quality newspaper and do a search for 'electricity' or something...

PLUS: if you don't know how to go about your task ask your class mates; if they don't know ask your teacher to explain how to do it. it's their duty to teach you how to do research, write an essay etc... (unless you've been taught before but forgot)

If electricity is a problem, and not the lack of it, in what sense is it a problem? Is the essay supposed to be commenting on the "evils" of technology? Without electricity, most modern people's activities come grinding to a halt. Are we to return to a simpler place in time when technology did not rule our lives?

Electricity powers toasters, microwaves, computers, lights, heating/cooling and so many other day to day things in our lives that perhaps we take for granted.

Just playing Devil's Advocate.... :nod:

Just playing Devil's Advocate.... :nod:...and doing it well, in my opinion. :thumbs_up I have been taught to always try to look at things from as many angles as possible. You seem to be following the same guideline?

Thanks, Claes. Actually the first thing that came to mind when I read Whimsy's question was that maybe that was the question...What if electricity was the actual problem? ( and not the lack of it). I know from my own experiences that I become completely flummoxed when the power goes out (and then there was the time I forgot to pay the electric bill... ;) ).

Truly, the modern world so depends on electricity or some sort of variant of it (batteries, generators ect..a power source) that when we are without it, we go a bit nuts. Is that dependency a good thing? Not necessarily, in my opinion, but that doesn't mean I wish to time travel 300 years in the past either.

Ok, so let me rephrase my question because it seems as though no one is understanding it properly!

2nd try:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is there a lack of electricity in South Africa (or is the country just not managing it properly)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well I hope this makes more sense! Thanks to all for the previous replies!!!

Right... Further questions: What prompted the question in the first place? Can you give us the circumstances? What power sources do you have?

I assume that there is indeed a lack of power at the end users? If so, that could mean either insufficient production, poor power distribution or both. It could also mean that the supplier is withholding it because the users cannot pay for it...

I think that I am getting Whimsy's question. In Pakistan, electricity is a great problem as it is not available sometimes because the WAPDA (those who supply electricity) switches off the supply of electricity because they claim that they don't have much resources of getting electricity or government is not providing them...

here's a link to a newspaper article I found by googling for: South Africa, energy crisis
http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=w060410&s=hammer041006
if you google for those or similar terms, i'm sure you'll be able to find lots of material... make sure to use only quality newspaper articles for your essay.
in advanced search you can also have google look for documents from certain domains only. enter .edu or .ac.uk where it says: from this domain only (or something).. this way you'll get documents from U.S. and Brit univs, i.e. essays written by professors etc... you can quote these in your essay.

because the WAPDA (those who supply electricity) switches off the supply of electricity because they claim that they don't have much resources of getting electricity or government is not providing them...I see. They are probably shutting it down deliberatly to prevent it from collapsing by itself when demand exceeds output (The latter would undoubtedly leave lots of damaged equipment in its wake).
