In August, we will be reading a book by Charlotte Bronte. The aim of the Book Club is to read and discuss new books together with other members.
Please try to avoid from voting for the books you have already read and/or do not intend to (re)read with us.
Thank you! :)

Though I did not like Jane Eyre immensely but it was not a bad read, on same places, it was quite interesting. Now, I think that I will love to try some other of her novels.

Charlotte Bronte has always been one of my favorite authors. I have read Jane Eyre THOROUGHLY as it was included in my BA portion. I would love to read other works by her. I was planning to start The Professor after completing The Picture of Dorian Gray. So my vote goes to The Professor.

Jane Eyre slightly depressed me.To say the least!
I find the whole Bronte clan depressing... Can't help thinking they should have got out more! ;)
Even though I am really tempted to re-read Miss Eyre's adventures, I think I will vote for Shirley!

I may also, as long as Laverne is in there also.

To be honest - I didn't know she wrote any books outside of Eyre... learned something new.... alright! Who says you can't learn stuff during the summer.

Thw whole clan, isnt that a bit harsh??
(II just want to say Ive FINALLY read wuthering heights  ) Ive heard that Villette(sp??) is the only decent on of the charollete novels. But then I hated jane Eyre with a vengence got all the way through then gave up on the conclusion.

I do find the books a bit depressing. The main characters are not the most cheerfull ones in the world. I will vote for the professor, as I haven't read that one.

I am already currently re-reading Jane Eyre, so I went with Shirley.
Hopefully "Laverne" will be there too. ;)

I have 3 of Charlotte Bronte's books. Jane Eyre, Villette and The Professor. In some respects they are mostly the same. Sort of the same characterisation of a Bronte novel. A unique hero/heroine. Not considered pretty/handsome, but kept from being ugly by a few rare features and behaviours. Also, all of Bronte's books have periods of brooding and self examination.
I highly enjoy reading Bronte's works because of the language she uses. She has many piquant and interesting words in all of her novels. The storyline itself is not an amazing outline (with the exception of Jane Eyre- which contains a few uncanny twists) but it is what the story contains- the value of it that makes her work so highly valued throughout the world.
Well. I've gone and babbled about every other point except the one that is most relevant, isn't it? :D But I'd like to read Shirley for the simple reason that i haven't read that before, and do not wish to reread the others just now, having read them not too long ago. :) Honey eaten too many times turn the stomach upside down. :)

Villette - one of my all time favorites :)

That was the point they were trying to make! Women had no rights in their time. I really liked The Tenent of Wildfell Hall for illustrating that point. Though Anne dosen't seem to be as poetic as her sisters, it's still a good book.
As much as I would love to re-re-read Jane Eyre, I'll go for Shirley. It was highly recommended to me by an Irish lady in my class at Cambridge who seemed to know more about the Bronte sisters than our intructor!
By the way, I got to see the manuscript of Jane Eyre at the British Library. It was open to the page...
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
where Rochester proposes to Jane.

I'll give this one a miss, I think. Victorian romantics just don't do it for me.

I voted for Shirley. It's not romantic. It's more of a social comment on the oppression of women , a subject that I find compelling.

Heh, I really did not expect this book to lead the poll at the end. Better go to the library tomorrow! :)

When it is too close to call like this, I usually order the two leading books and borrow the winner. Gives me the chance to start reading the books at the beginning of the month without much delay.
*checks out her crystal ball to see when she will get a life (if ever)*
