We all must have had first impressions or experiences about something or the other.

It could be your first impression of this forum or when you met someone, or when you read a book or when you visited a new place.

There must be some experience that we have had, good or bad, that we still remember and that have had lasting impressions on us. Good experiences that we still remember or bad experiences that we want to forget but are unable to.

I would like to share what was my first impression when I joined this forum. I was very nervous, I had already browsed through so many threads before deciding to join, and I came across people who read great books like Ulysses. I thought Oh my God, if I start reading this book it would take me 100 years to finish it. And then I also thought what if the members did not like what I wrote, English is not my first language and it is not the language in which I speak or think most of the time, unless required (client interactions only). I thought no one would reply to what I express.

But believe me I was more than welcome here. I think my stay here is going to be long and interesting.

So lets continue with our experiences, let's share our first impressions.

Enjoy!!!!

When I started East Of Eden, there was an impression in me that it will turn out to be something really good and it did! This is a wonderful book which I will suggest to those who want to read a good book.

My first impression of my now-boyfriend was that he was just as crazy as me, because we talked about how fun it was to be electrocuted.

At the time I already had a boyfriend, so sadly it wasn't until a year later when we met again at a birthday party and were the first people on the dance floor that I realized that he was definitely crazy (he was dancing with me after all)...and that he was the man of my dreams :)

Last year when I visited Beech in Karachi for the first time in my life, I was like "Oh, what a fine place! How good it will be to live in the hut nearby" In fact, I loved it.

My first impression of the forum was "Surely, Pensive; you are going to enjoy here, this place suits you, doesn't it?"

My first impression of Harry Potter series was "HP series rocks! There can be nothing better in the whole world" But merrily, I admit that my first impression changed here, I found many books better than HP series but still I love HP series.

My first train journey was a very memorable one, I was traveling for the first time alone and that long a distance. I had to travel from Delhi to Bangalore, it was almost a one and a half day run. I was apprehensive, I thought what if I get down on some station and the train chugs away leaving me (I have all such wierd thoughts). But It was so much fun, I really thought I had grown up and and was as if I can conquer the world (just by a simple train journey). But it did give me so much self confidence. And I also realised I had a huge capacity to sleep, I was sleeping during my entire journey, only getting up to have food.

Hey thanks Mir, I am thoroughly enjoying. I was never really a big fan of blogs, but I guess I have to change my opinion now.

Oh, I love journey, especially by train. It is so much fun! I can never sleep while the journey, I love to look at the sceneries around me and people talks. It is so much fun!

I love trains too. One of my most vivid memories from the time I lived in Boston was a train trip we took to NYC, the track followed the coastline...more or less and for a small town girl who lived in a land locked state, it was quite a sight.

Another first impression that still has a strong hold on my mind is the first time I drove into the city we moved to when I was 15. I had lived in the same tiny, little town, population about 1600, from infanthood, the friends I had I had known literally all my life and then my Dad got a call to another parish that he really wanted to take so we moved and I was terrified. Now it seems ridiculous that I ever considered Bismarck/Mandan "the big city" but it was significantly bigger than where I had grown up, my one class in my new high school was bigger than the entire Senior and Junior high combined in my old school. I remember driving into the city and feeling a sense of downright panic at the thought of having to navigate these streets and feeling that I would never be able to fit in, that I would be so lost, both figuratively and literally in such a big school and it also finally hit me, the finality of all, that I had left everything I knew, all my friends, all my memories and it was all quite horrifying. Of course everything eventually turned out ok, I made friends, I learned my way around the school...although that really did take awhile...and even though I never came to think of that new town as my home, I did have fun and got through the rest of the high school years relatively unscathed.

My very first impression of St. Thomas I can't remember, because I was quite young. But I can tell you my first impression of it as a 16-year-old seeing it for the first time as a place that I would be permanently living in:

(I have since had my impression changed by brain-sucking leech aliens...and a boy named Christopher)

I lived in Boston for 5 years, primarily in the Allston/Brighton area. I had a nasty apartment one time in Allston, but it was cool because I could walk to Harvard Square in 10 minutes (home of Harvard University for non-Massachusetts folks)

My first impression of that apartment? "Eush, I need floor cleaner!"
My first impression of this forum was "excellent... and friendly folks and good books." Hi Madhuri

I lived in West Newton, I was a nanny so I didn't have to afford anything, which is a nice way to live in Boston. ;) I loved Harvard Square, we hung out there quite often, although my favorite place to go was Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, I just loved that place. We also spent a ridiculous amount of time in Salem, we were obsessed with this big fountain they had there, at the East India Mall. We decided that the greatest thing in the world would be to walk across it so we would hang out at the Cheers bar they had in town and then casually walk over to the fountain, wait until the bar crowd wandered home and hope the police wouldn't come by and we would skip across the fountain...it was dorky but we got a big kick out of it.

The Cheers bar...heh, I never went in there for some reason. Is it nice?
The Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner and the Boston Aquarium are wonderful places to go if anyone wants to vacation in Boston. Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall are also fun places to go.

last week I went on a vacation to Bangkok and Pattaya. It was my first overseas visit, first on a plane, first on a beach, first in a foreign metropolis. There were so many firsts and I was looking forward for the trip. I was in this huge group that went from our office. I was obviously very excited. For most of us it was so many firsts. When we reached Pattaya, I was so excited to see the beach, feel the sand and the waves, I felt so small before the magnanimity of the sea. We went for so many water sports, para sailing (it was scary initially, but I was actually flying over the sea). Once on the beach of Coral Island, I saw sea shells spread on the beach. Alongside the beach there was so much sea food available, tattoo making stalls and the works. I had splendid time, played in the water, laze around in the sun, relax.....while coming back in the motorboat, it felt as if it is not on the water but somewhat flying above it, the speed was too fast.....I had the vacation of a life time.

First impressions, wow. Never be to quick to judge anyone, even if you think you are not judging them fast.

There is this girl who was a friend of my best friend's. I thought she was so grrr....wanting to be one of the guys and date them too kind of a person.

I went to a going away party Sunday night, and we became inseparable!! I felt so bad for having thought ill of her.

But isn't that how most of our greatest friends start - well at least mine anyway.

I completely agree with you Grace. Even I have had such experiences, I hated the person initially (that is usually when I have not interacted with them), but once you get to know them, they they turn out to be real nice people, and you never want to lose them.

Fulfilling Madhuri's wish I'll share with you this thing which is really unpleasant for me to mention. I can count three of my friends who say that the first time we saw you we thought you are cocky! I've always made them hate what they say coz I annoy them with questions of why did you get this idea of me? Maybe coz of the way I wear or stare! Dunno…on the other hand, I've met many people who say how you can be sociable like this, you can deal with all sort of people in a friendly and warm way. Bad for me, I do not take those who compliments into account, it's those criticizing words that stick to my mind.

You can't help getting first impression about people. The bad thing is to believe and act according to it. We must verify our 1st impression about anything or any person we encounter.

Thank you, Miss Tenderness. There have been so many situations where I was easily tricked by first impressions of others about me, that I actually did believe it at times and tried to do what people wanted me to do. And I completely agree with you that one should not believe and act according to what people think of us, rather we should be our own person.

This is for you Pensive.

My first impression on a train in England was to constantly think "Harry Potter!" Not only was I at King's Cross station, but I took the Gatwick Express to get to Cambridge. It was surreal! In a new place, off to a new school (granted only for a couple of weeks), I felt like Harry. Being surrounded by the accent added that much more. Even on the train the refreshment cart came by though instead of an old lady it was a young guy.

That same day, my first impression of Cambridge (I stayed at Selwyn College) was The Secret Garden! There were flowers and greenery everywhere! I think my favorite part of the scenery was the red brick buildings covered in ivy. I've always wanted a red brick house covered in ivy.

My decision was right. I dont feel out of place. People respond without targeting anybody personally and that is what I like about this forum, all ideas and opinions are welcome. There were so may views that I placed and I was not sure of the response that I would get, I would be chewing my nails thinking this is gonna hit back, but that was never the case.

My first impression of this forum was pretty much, let's try it, and see if it works out. Then I felt like leaving, like I was perhaps unwanted, so I started a goodbye thread. I was shocked by the results! People totally unexpected were asking me to stay. That's why my signature has become what it now is. First impressions of people, places, and things can be either right or wrong, it is time that will make the answer reveal itself. I'm grateful for a place to come and chat and leave an opinion or two, and just remain me! Nobody will ever know how much that means to me, being accepted for who I am and what I am. This forum is like home. God bless.

I try not to form first impressions, especially about people, although it can be difficult. I find that bluntness or abruptness may be mistaken for unfriendliness or unkindness; this is not always the case. Conversely, those who come off as sweet and innocent may be wolves in sheeps clothing.
A first impression is not always a good impression.

My first introduction to the forum was by my sister bout a year back. I didn't say much then. I just needed to read some more. (Does that sound bumpkin!)Now, I sort of felt like ducking out for a bit and writing. Recent life has left me out of sorts. Anyway, I've been struggling to get it out and have managed to start somehow. Don't think I like what I've done. It's sort of uphill to get from hurt to healthy. Feels like rehab. Gotta watch myself, not do the things I feel. Still, there is some relief to write a few words, stare at them and know that in their swirls and curves lies meaning.

I must admit to being a little daunted by the sheer amount of knowledge out there. You guys delve deep. I still find it tough to keep my attention fixed till the end. Let alone notice the details. I also feel a long way off from having a personal intmate dialogue with what I read ("Why did he/she do that?")

I logged on about a month back, then I had to shift digs, so I went and now I am back.

I agree!!!:yawnb:

Did you read the whole thing??? My favorite was The Purgatorio, though I was very sad when Virgil left Dante...

Sorry to get off track...

My first impression of Lolita was....woah....I would of hoped it stayed that way, but the rest didn't do it for me..
