Yes Virgil you are correct, I am in fact a guy. Though no offense taken Pensive, don't feel bad.

I thought so. I know a few girls do box (from that Clint Eastwood boxing movie that came a few years ago) but I thought it would be unuusual if a lit net girl got in the ring. :D Although I wouldn't want to cross them in a dark alley. :p

Haha, surprisingly enough at my gym there are a fair number of females especially in the younger classes. In the adult classes it's almost exclusively male, and we only have one proffesional female. Under 20 years old though and I'd say it's about 65% girls 35% guys and our amateur ranks are overrun by the girls! Not that theres anything wrong with that, I always loved training when there was a youth class being taught (youth being under 19) because I always worked just a bit harder knowing there were 7 or 8 girls who could potentially be watching me at any moment  .

I'm proud to announce that the next Lit-Net Member Interview will be with
subterranean (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/member.php?u=1961)

She may already be famous, but I'm sure you can all find questions to ask her. What mysteries lie behind the name Subterranean? You can find out by sending in your questions. Remember, this is to be done by PM. There will be a number of days for you to do so, so start thinking of questions now!

Is it no spelt right then??

Well, here we must clarify and define "right".

Is it properly spelled according to the agreed upon rules of the English language? No.

Is it the best possible way that subterranean could have spelled it? Does it not ascribe to some greater sense of "right" and "justice" that perhaps we mortals cannot even apprehend? If there is any justice and goodness in the Universe, would it not manifest itself in a manner exactly corresponding to her beautiful signature?

YES.

According to the agreed upon rules of the English language, the correct spelling of the word in question is: Completely

However, all this may soon be changed, and Sub could very likely be the start of a new trend....

subterranean (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/member.php?u=1961)
Introductory questions

1. How are you today?
I’m not really well at the moment. I have a slight fever and bad cough, probably because of work and too much night wind :)

2. What is your (user) name?
Subterranean

3. How did you decide on your username?
The name subterranean is taken from a song title, “Subterranean Homesick Alien”. It is one of my all time favorite songs.

4. What does your user name mean?
According to http://www.dictionary.com, subterranean can be defined as:

–adjective Also, sub‧ter‧ra‧ne‧ous.
1. existing, situated, or operating below the surface of the earth; underground.
2. existing or operating out of sight or secretly; hidden or secret.
–noun
3. a person or thing that is subterranean.
4. a subterrane.

But for me, it’s nothing but one of the most interesting English words I’ve ever read and it reminds me of a good song also!

5. Why did you initially join the lit-net?
The answer to this question is probably the most typical one you ever received :). I was searching for Maupassant online short stories. At that time (December 2003), I was a new fan of him. So I dig the internet to read his online stories and I bumped in to Online Literature Network and I noticed there’s a forum in this website. I didn’t join the forum until several visits because from reading the posts, I see that the forum got bright, well read, and hilarious members and I didn’t think that I would ever managed to catch up with them.
That thread, “Do you hate me?” was one of the earliest threads that grabbed my attention.

6. What would you say is the best aspect of the forum?
The members, obviously! They’re guilty for all the madness and fun happening around here . They should have known that this foruming thing could lead to addiction.

7. Why do you think people on the forum often think you are a guy?
Suppose you should ask this question to them :D. Well, I’m not sure. Probably because of the user name, my chosen avatars, or perhaps my posts. I mean it is probably easier to identify a member as female if the person’s user id is miss tenderness or kathycf (hi miss T, hi kathy).
I never had the intention to be mistaken as a guy though

8. How do you feel about smilies? (Suggested by Nightshade)
I feel great about them. They make us more “understandable”

9. As one of the longest standing member, how have you seen lit net change over time? (Suggested by Virgil)
When I first joined the forum (December 2003), we didn’t have many active members around. There were only few of us and it was really cool when some of us happened to be online at the same time. I remembered one of Koa’s posts where she expressed her surprise because there was no single new post made in the forum, even though she had not check out the forum for several days. So things were slow in the old days. But it was cool and fun. Now the forum keeps getting better; we got many cool active members, great/silly/funny/cool threads, some of us have “embarrassing” posts count (including me) which, I presume, a sign that we’re enjoying the forum that much. And we see new members (from all over the continents) joined and stick around as they already becoming addicted to the forum .

I do miss some of them (fayefaye, kik, isagel, AP, and fool) and wish they will post again. However, what matters most is that the forum remains as a fine e-source for literature enthusiasts around the globe, and we should thank ourselves for that.

10. Why completly? (suggested by nightshade)
I made this spelling mistake, completely, in some of my posts. At certain point, I realized that I made spelling mistake, but I kept writing like that anyway. No one gave any comment about it; not sure is it because they didn’t notice the mistake or because they know that I’m not an English native speaker, hence they excuse me for making that error . Then ShoutGrace, in a very nice way, commented about that misspelled word. I was quite impressed that he brought it up to my face. We made fun out of it and the signature was part of the joke :)

11. Nightshade would like to know why on earth you keep coming back? Are we really that interesting?
I log in mostly from my office, during working hours. That’s, in general, from 08.00 to 17.00, Monday to Friday. Doing office work can be a real pain sometime and reading the posts in the forum is one of the best ways to get rid of that pain. I can stay on and leave it just like that when I actually not in my desk.
And yea…you guys are that interesting (laugh). You know that already.

Personal Questions

12. How old are you ?
I’m 25

13. How would you describe yourself, your personality?
I’m a curious and impulsive person, with obsessions that don’t really correlate with my intellectual capacity :D

14. What do you do in RL? Student, work?
I work as a senior client coordinator in a logistics company. I also take distance learning course majoring in English for Translation.

15. Could you tell us a little more about what you do?

To be very simple, my job is to make sure that you can purchase your summer/winter/Christmas clothes at your nearest department store at the moment you need them. I’m not working for that store, but I work for a company which works for that store.

16. Who is the man in the signature? (suggested by Nightshade)
Thom Yorke, one of the few most original musicians of the 21st century.

17. Can you tell us more about "caffeinated psychopathic ol' cats" and of what significance they are to you? (Suggested by RJbibliophil)
They are only significant because they are caffeinated. I don’t really care whether it is a cat, dog, crocs, whatever… The word “caffeinated” is what really matters!

18. Would you to tell us a bit about your various hobbies?
I don’t really have various hobbies. My span of interests only covers those usual stuffs like books, music, and movies. I do sometime take pictures, esp. when I travel. But that’s not really a hobby as it’s just a way to keep mementos on the interesting things I saw.

19. Do you like sports, if so do you play sports yourself?
I’m not a sport person, but I can confirm that I jog every Saturday from 05.30 to 07.00. If I’m not in my running shoes, I most likely be swimming, I usually swim from 07’00 to 10.00. For the sake of sport literacy, I sometimes watch the Premiere League, esp. when Liverpool plays. No, I’m not a fan of LFC. On the contrary, I enjoy it very much when the Liverpool loose and take the shame (smile). There’s personal reason behind this which, unfortunately, I can not share with you guys :)

20. Do you like to travel?
Yes, very much. I have to say that I haven’t yet got the opportunities to discover more. I have high admiration to world travelers.

21. Which countries have you visited? And which ones would you really like to visit someday?
So far, I have only been all over South East Asia, for work and personal travel. Bangkok is my personal favorite; this is my 4th visit here (I’m currently in Bangkok until the end of October). I’m hoping for a future opportunity to visit countries in Europe. But if Europe is too far, I would be really happy to journey all over Asia.

22. Could you tell us something about the countries you have visited? Like the culture, environment, etc.
South East Asian (SEA) countries are very diverse. For example, gay relationship is accepted openly in Thailand but not (yet) in other SEA countries. You would hardly able to find bars, clubs, or pubs open after 11 PM in Hanoi, while in other SEA countries, you probably just start jamming around that time. You probably won’t find many spicy cuisines in Manila as the Philippines don’t really eat spicy stuffs. But if you’re in Jakarta or Bangkok, spicy foods must be there in your dining list. Countries in SEA are also diverse when it comes to economic conditions and society welfare. There are, of course, some things that bound us together like the similar Asian look we share. I got mistaken many times as a Thai, a Vietnamese, or as a Pinay (Philippine female). I highly recommend SEA to be included in your travel list. And one more thing, SEA is a shopping paradise!

23. What about your own country? What do you like about where you live?
We got more than 13 thousands islands (big and small), hundreds of languages and dialects, long list of great cuisines, traditional dances, and numerous great places to visit. Indonesia beaches are Australians and Zealanders favorite spots to surf. Yes, we do have issues on environment, corruption, terrorism, security, unemployment, etc. and we often feel that our situation is a hopeless case because of these unresolved problems. But I personally believe there’s always hope to make things better.

24. Do you have a personal hero, or someone you look up to?
No. I just have several personal idols. I don’t look up to them; I just like them more.
25. Now, for all the singles of the Lit-net, marital status?
Single and I think I am available :)

Favorites

We can’t have an interview on a literature site without asking the obvious questions,

26. So who is your favorite author?
I have to say that I give more attention to Heller, Hesse, Hardy, and Lewis.

27. What’s your favorite kind of literature?
I read a lot of fiction. I like short story and novels. Recently, I’m trying to extend my reading on plays too. And I probably should balance my portion of non-fiction real soon. I hardly read non-fiction (other than weekend newspaper) since I graduated 3 years ago.

27. And your favorite book?
Some of my most favorites are Catch-22, Sophie’s World, Pilgrims Regress and Siddhartha. But then like many others, I also have those books which I categorized as my favorites, like Jude the Obscure, Sophie’s World, and 1984. The list is a dynamic one, of course.

28. What kind of music do you enjoy?
I have personal interest in British punk and progressive rock.

29. Which are your favorite bands/singers/composers/etc.?
Radiohead is one of my all time favorites, along with The Who, and Pink Floyd. I also very much enjoy R.E.M, The Clash, and Led Zeppelin. I also have a long list of “bands/singer that I enjoy”, which includes Travis, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, and Lightning Seeds.

30. Tell us something about your favorite movie.
We’re the all singing all dancing craps of the world (Fight Club).

It's a great thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself (American Beauty).

31. Your favorite game in the Games sub-forum?
The ones that don’t make me think too hard when replying to them. I’m pretty slow .

32. Amazons or Dastardly Stans?
I can not choose because I don’t really understand what the conflict is all about. Please excuse me for my lack of attentiveness.

33. Any other favorites we should know about?
Favorite members in the forum. But I suppose I’ll keep them for my self as I don’t want to spark any jealousy around here :D. Just kidding!

And now, the most important questions of them all

35. What’s your favorite smilie?

The waving lad with a smile in his face. He’s the cutest of all

36. How do you like your turnips?
Hmm…I’m not in to turnips.

Thank you for the interview
You’ are most welcome, and don’t bother, the tea and pie are on me.

I saw it at the movies, and I was 16 at the time, that's what's so nice about the Netherlands, they don't make such a fuss about young people seeing films like this. :) Although the min age was 16. (lucky me :D)

TEND

Up in Canada we're fairly lax about it too, and movies very rarely get an 18+ rating. Most movies receiving R ratings in the states are PA up here (Parental Accompaniement) which I think is 16+ if your alone.

Thanks, Vig. Well, I remember reading an article about logistics and there's a quote from Collin Powell, which said a similiar thing about the significance of logistics in security issues. As a side note for those of you that are too young to see the movie Fight Club - there is a book, yes there is! Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk. He also wrote several other wonderful novels if Fight Club leaves you wanting more. :)

But yes, I will wait for this interview. :) because he is a mystery to me.

The Interview committee is proud to present the interview with none other than
Admin (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/member.php?u=3)
who we all know as Chris, the Administrator of this site.

About the Literature-Network

1. How are you today?
My back is sore from moving a big pot in my garden.

2. How did you decide on your username? We know you are the Administrator, but why not a more personal username?
In the beginning people didn’t necessarily know I was the admin, and so having it be my username was a good solution.

3. Why did you initially start with the Literature Network?
I made my first website (a personal one) in 1994, and I made more personal ones in the years after, but then in 1999 I started thinking of a site I could publish that could be viable commercially. I decided to make a site about Shakespeare that eventually morphed into what you see today.

4. About how many hours do you spend on here every day?
On a day where I’m actively working on something for the site I can do 8 hours. Like when I did the new design. On a normal day when I’m just checking in to see if there are any issues I need to give attention to it’s probably around one total hour spaced out in multiple increments of course.

5. Why you hardly take part (post) in the General Chat section? (Suggested by Subterranean).
A lack of time. I don’t have time to read and post in every thread (obviously, my post count is now dwarfed by many members). I read every post in the Literature Network subforum, and in our hidden forums for moderator discussions, but otherwise only read/post in a thread if I see the title on the forum homepage and it draws me in.

6. Don't you ever wish you weren't the Admin but just a random user of the forum, to have the chance and the time to relax and join our sometimes-silly conversations? (suggested by Koa.)
Honestly, no. There are forums I participate in where I’m just a member, so I get that there, but in general even there I tend to stay out of general chat. It is basically a time issue again. I used to chat and whatnot more in the 90’s when I was younger and less busy, but I grew out of it I guess.

7. You seem to be a person of few words. Do you believe less is more? (suggested by Madhuri).
I don’t necessarily believe less is more, but I’m a very to-the-point kind of guy.

8. What would you say is the best aspect of the forum/site?
The moderators. Without them I couldn’t do it. If you want to know what has attributed most to the site’s success it would probably be the book search feature. There are other sites like this, and most have search features now, but when it first launched it was one of the only ones that did, and that made a difference in early promotion.

9. Since I assume you chose the smilies we have, why did you choose them and which is your favourite? Also have you considered giving us more? (Suggested by Nightshade)
I don’t think I have a favorite, the one I use most often would be the common winking one. I chose them merely as a package deal and yes, I could add more. It also doesn’t surprise me that Nightshade asked this ;)

10. I think everyone is impressed with the amount of works you have on the site, how do you find all these works?
Most of the works were digitised by Project Gutenberg, a long standing project to digitize books. It is nice because PG doesn’t put any restrictions on use. As for which books to choose, originally it started with my own experience. Shakespeare was first, then Homer, then people like Dickens and Wells. Eventually though most of the books or authors came out of suggestions from users.

11. You recently created a new sub-forum called newsletters. There are currently two, both of which are a nice touch, can you tell us a bit about them, and are more on the way?
With the recent forum upgrade a new system was included that could take RSS feeds and post them automatically to the forum. The two newsletters right now are two that I publish as spinoffs from this site. I am open to adding any literature-based newsletter to this forum though that includes an RSS feed. This way you can read a newsletter right in the forum. I’ve asked Today in Literature about doing it with them but they’ve ignored me so far. If you have any suggestions let me know.

12. Does the site pay? (Or does it eat away at your life savings?) or does it run about break even? (Suggested by Nightshade)
The forums are about break even, but the main site is profitable. Of course it took years to build and I wasn’t making anything at first so who knows what the actual hourly rate evens out to.

13. What other sites do you have?
Lots. On my last birthday Logos listed some. There is The Fantasy Forum which is linked to from the forum that I own. There is also Cbswords.com which is an ecommerce site of mine. You’ll be able to find a lot of the sites through the hub which is Jalic.com. One newer site/forum of mine can be found at http://www.backyardgardening.net/. If you’re interested in gardening at all I invite you to check it out.

14. How do servers work? Do you have massive computers in your basement that store all the information or what?(suggested by Nightshade)
The servers are located in a Datacenter in Texas. The company that provides them is EV1servers.net. I currently have 4, but one is basically for this site alone. I am thinking about upgrading it soon. Currently the server this site is on is a P4 3.2 ghz w/ HT that runs Red Hat Linux and has 4 gb of RAM. I’m thinking about upgrading it to a dual Opteron or Dual Xeon server though.

End of part I.

Part II of the interview with Admin:

Personal Questions

15. What is your date of birth?
3/9/81. I’m 25.

16. How would you describe yourself, your personality?[/]
White and Nerdy? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw)[i](Editor: Click the link!!!). I have a nice car, and rims that aren’t stationary would be cool. I don’t know Klingon but I do know Javascript. I don’t have a Segway, but I do have a business making websites. I like Picard I think more than Kirk. I do like Renaissance festivals.

Seriously though, I’m tall, 6’5. I’m a decent specimen of a man I guess, could stand to lose some weight. I’m intelligent, I know a little about a lot. I’m always explaining things or teaching things, just random things. It annoys my wife sometimes. I’m blessed with a very good memory and tend to remember most things I read or hear and so I just regurgitate that stuff all day. Especially anything that has to do with history, be it politics, wars, discoveries, science, literature. If it took place a long time ago, it interests me. I’m a college dropout, I lost interest. It annoys me to say that though because I always think people think I’m stupid if I dropped out of college. For me, with my business doing well, it was a waste of time, and I tested in the top 1 percentile on my entrance exams anyways.

I’m stubborn, I’m blunt, I’m honest to a fault. I’m romantic, I like kids, I’ll probably be a good dad.

17. Could you tell us a little more about what you do?
I publish websites. I have a handful of ecommerce sites but most are advertising driven. Mostly what I do nowadays falls into a few categoryes.

1. Coding/Design – I do this less now than I used to since I often hire people to do this part for me.
2. Management & Marketing – This is what I mostly do, just getting the websites out there and keeping them running. Dealing with users, etc.
3. Writing – Writing content is what I’m doing more and more of, and I like it. I’d love to be a novelist one day.

18. Can you tell us a bit about your various hobbies?
I write, I read. I play video games, but my biggest hobby is gardening. My yard is awesome. I’d like to eventually retire from the Internet stuff, build a castle in the mountains, and raise sheep or honey bees or something and have a somewhat pastoral life and write.

19. Do you like sports, if so do you play sports yourself?
I played football in highschool, and soccer before that. Currently the only sport I still do is skiing, which I enjoy. I don’t much follow professional sports because I do not like the business of it, but I enjoy our local college teams.

20. Do you like to travel?
Absolutely. I’ve been to Tanzania, Canada of course (only a few hours from the border) and Germany, France, England. I really like Europe because of all the history, being so into history it is just so cool to be somewhere with such age. I’ve also taken my wife to Jamaica a couple times. I’ve never been to the western US though, and never seen the Pacific Ocean. I’ve never been to New York, so there is definitely a lot of travelling still to do.

21. Which countries have you visited? And which ones would you really like to visit someday?
I think I’ve already answered the first part. I’d like to go back to Europe for like a 3 week river cruise to do Germany and France. Then probably back again to do the British Isles, then probably back again to do Italy and Greece maybe. Maybe a Mediterranean cruise. I’d like to visit Egypt one day, China, Australia, New Zealand, maybe India.

22. What do you like about where you live, your country?
The freedom. The openness. The diversity. One thing you notice in a lot of other countries is that everyone looks the same. While it is true, here in the US, we do have a white majority, the fact is that there are people of all sorts of ethnicities that are easy to see. This of course means that there are a lot of great restaurants :) I also enjoy how the US is always on the cutting edge of science and technology, I’m into that sort of thing.

23. Do you have a personal hero, or someone you look up to?
Not especially. I take a lot of inspiration from my Dad. He is a very hard worker and a good provider and very level headed and reasonable, but I don’t see it as anything special. As long as they’re not coming from a broken home I think most people look up to their parents. I certainly have problems with them too though.

24. Have you ever been forced to report anybody to legal authorities due to their behavior here on the forum? (I'm thinking specifically about an incident in which a certain person threatened to come to East Lansing and vandalize your property) (Suggested by Basil)
Yup, I reported him. I get weirdo threats on the Internet all the time, but in this case the guy only lived half an hour away and you cannot be too careful.

Favourites

25. We can’t have an interview on your literature site without asking the obvious questions, so who is your favourite author?
Hmm… it is hard to say. I do not think I have a favorite. Of authors on the site I like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Shakespeare. Donne is definitely my favorite poet and I like some of Wilde’s stuff. Of more modern authors I like fantasy, Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Dave Duncan. I like Michael Chrichton. The Da Vinci Code was good (if easy).

26. And your favourite book?
Again, I cannot say. I do not have one favorite. The book I have read most often (probably about 5 times) is the Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, but I do not necessarily think its my favorite. Of the books on this site my favorite is probably The Great Gatsby.

27. What kind of music do you enjoy?
90’s alternative. 80’s rock. Very little that has come out since. I like some rap, I don’t like greed-rap (ala Puff Daddy) and I don’t like wanna-be-a-thug rap (ala mostly everyone else), but I like Eminem. The lyrics have to be meaningful for me. I also like classical or ethnic instrumentals, irish jigs etc. Some reggae (Bob Marley, Sean Paul, some Shaggy or Wyclef). Two of my favorite songs that are hard to classify are Laura Creamer’s rendition of Bonny Portmore and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s Over the Rainbow/What a wonderful world.

Bands I like: Black Lab, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Bush, Counting Crows, Live, Matchbox 20 (but not Rob Thomas), older Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, some Metallica, Alanis Morissette, Weezer. I hate Nickleback with a passion. I hate corporate-made music.

28. Tell us something about your favourite movie.
Hard to pick a favorite, I like the LOTR Trilogy. The usual suspects. Star Wars. Braveheart. Braveheart was definitely my favorite until LOTR came out, now I don’t know. Notting Hill is probably my favorite romantic comedy.

29. Any other favourites we should know about? How about TV shows?
If you don’t watch Battlestar Galactica and are at all into Science Fiction/Space you’re doing yourself a disservice. It is an extremely well done military-sci-fi show. I am amazed all the time that the Sci-Fi channel can afford to put it out. The first two seasons are out on DVD now, rent them, the third season just started last week. HBO’s Rome was excellent as well, the next season for that comes out in 2007, I don’t know if it is on DVD yet. I like Lost, and Jericho (which is new this fall). I like Law and Order, mostly for Sam Waterson, I prefer the legal bits rather than the police bits. I love South Park. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are geniuses. Team America: World Police was a great movie too.

And now, the most important question of them all
30. How do you like your turnips?
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a turnip.

Thank you for the interview.

I really prefer TNG because of Data, but I think I like Picard because of his passion for Starfleet. He's also an intellectual captain, rather than the jock-fighter-hero type of Kirk.

Atleast no one is singing the praises of Janeway.

I think that's it exactly, Picard leads with his head and Kirk led with his heart. It always seemed to me that they split Kirk in two when they made TNG, Picard was his more serious, focused side and Riker was his more "playful" side. Kirk was too much man for one character, it took two men to equal his manliness. ;) :p

I never saw the version with Hathaway, I know who she is just from previews and other press releases but I never actually watched an episode of that show but she looked rather stern and cold.

I seem to know a large number of insanely intelligent and successful people who dropped out of either high school or college because there was simply no reason for them to stay, they had successful businesses that were promising successful futures. Heck, here where I live, there are many, many men who didn't finish high school who are making just as much if not more money than their peers who went to college...don't feel funny telling people you're a drop-out, let them think what they will, the fools! :p

The Interview committee is proud to present the interview with none other than
JAY (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/member.php?u=883)
She made all of you wait for it, but the interview is finally here

Introductory questions

1. How are you today?
I'm doing good, thanks

2. What is your (user) name?
(Jay) Jarmila

3. How did you decide on your username?
I didn't want to use my name when I was registering but I couldn't think of anything 'original' I would like so I decided to just use my initial, and transformed it into Jay. It stuck and I've been Jay ever since.

4. Why did you initially join the lit-net?
I was looking for something about John Milton I could use for my final IT project in secondary school (it was about creating a website, the content didn't matter, I'm not actually sure why I chose to use John Milton's poetry).
Also, I was looking for the author of this poem (http://www.businessballs.com/donotstandatmygraveandweep.htm). I'm not sure which one came first.

5. What would you say is the best aspect of the forum?

The best aspect? The friends you make, the people you meet thanks to the forum. I've made a few very good friends here over the years.

6. If you could do anything with the forum what would it be?
I think I'd cancel the 10-character rule as the limit for minimum length of a post.

7. How do you feel about smilies?
In a very positive way :goof:

8. Why are all of your posts so short? Usually a sentence or two at the most, sometimes less. (suggested by Virgil)
The length of my posts mostly depends on the subject. I'm mainly trying to just say what I think and not agonize about a single point for ten paragraphs or more... unless I start to babble, at which point I tend to say the same thing over and over again, every time a little bit differently, making less and less sense by each sentence... so I just usually choose to be brief and (hopefully) clear. Why write an essay to say something that could be expressed just as well by a few words? I don't think that the point of a post is to put the reader to sleep.

9. How do you feel about being a mod?
Powerhungry! ;)
Nah, I don't think it makes me feel much differently from what it feels like being a regular member.

10. Have you noticed that since you became a mod you seem to spend less time posting?
Yes, I have. I think that it's because before, I could skip reading threads/posts I wasn't interested in. Now, if I haven't been away for more than a day or two, I try to read all new posts to be up to date with the situation on the forum. It takes some time to do so, time I would probably spend posting before. Sometimes I only log in to read through the new posts. Also, in the last few months real life has been interfering more often than it used to before.

11. As one of the oldest members here how do you think the forum has changed?
We got new cool stuff to play with! Most recently the blogs, new fast shiny server, a new look, there's the Forum Book Club, Short Story Competition, The Poetry Post, more and more e-texts/content have been added... new members join, some of the old leave, which results in a general change of the overall atmosphere at times. Since I joined, the forum has been getting more and more busy. I remember a time when there only used to be very few new posts every day and having some other member online at the same time you were, that was just great! I remember being scolded for having a conversation with Shea (ok, so maybe we didn't stay too on topic :p) in a few different threads just a few weeks after I joined.

Personal Questions

12. What is your date of birth?
14 December 1983

13. How would you describe yourself, your personality?
In short, I'm just crazy. I daydream a lot, I'm lazy, I'm not too good at getting things done but I usually manage under the pressure of a deadline, I think I get excited easily (leads to new obsessions), I tend to be overprotective, second-guess myself often, I'm good at procrastinating, I tend to be sarcastic (or so I've been told ;)), I use parenthesis a lot.

14. What do you do in RL? Student, work?
I study English language and literature.

15. Could you tell us a little more about what you do?
Other than spending lots of time on the net/laptop, I actually attend lectures. When there's some time between lectures, I'm usually in the faculty's library either reading/studying or more likely spending more time yet on the net. I also spend several hours on the train each fortnight, usually reading assigned books or studying... or dozing off :p. Once I'm at home, I like spending my time with my niece who will be 1 year old in December

16. Would you tell us something about your various hobbies?
I like reading, listening to music (I prefer having background music on as much as possible), I like animals, most of all horses (Clydesdales and Shires in case anybody's interested) and dogs (Irish Wolfhound being my favourite). I also like reading fan fiction, I enjoy spending time outside walking or photographing. I draw but I'm not too good at it, I don't really suck (purely objectively speaking ) but I'm not a Picasso either. Oh, and I used to build jet models, not enough time for that now (always busy doing something else). I collect stamps :p (haven't grown out of it yet)

17. Do you like sports, if so do you play sports yourself?
Sports... in PE I always liked games, mostly anything played with a ball. I used to play floorball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floorball) in a team a few years ago, I was the goalkeeper. I also used to ride horses but unfortunately I no longer have the opportunity. If you can catch me watching a match on the TV, I'm watching ice hockey.

18.What of music? Play any instruments?
I used to play the recorder when I was in elementary school and the drums at secondary. I'd like to learn to play the piano/keyboard and I'd like to start playing the drums again.

19. Have you played in a band? If so, what was it like? Do you want to play in a band (again)?
I've never played with a band. The only accompaniment I've ever got was my sister after she got two guitars (she got a better one and I was allowed to main the old one). Oh, forgot to mention, my guitar playing skills might be considered string-torture :p. Now that I'm thinking about it, the last few months before I quit playing the recorder, I used to play several pieces with a boy who was playing the clarinet, but never with a band. Just before I finished secondary school, my drums teacher told me he'd bring me an electric guitar player to help me with a problem I had but either he kept forgetting about it or just couldn't find anybody whose schedule would work with mine.
If I ever get back to playing the drums or learn to play the keyboard I'd like to give playing in a band a shot.

20. Do you like to travel?
I'm not sure. I've only been 'abroad' once, in the UK. I have relatives in Slovakia (which I can't seem to think of as abroad) and visit when I can but that's not travelling in my opinion. I like travelling by train, I have never been on a plane or a boat and I get motion sickness on the bus sometimes. I'd like to travel and experience foreign countries and cultures so I suppose you could say that I like travelling.

21. Which countries have you visited? And which ones would you really like to visit someday?
I have spent a week in the UK, done some shopping trips to Poland and Germany (very close to the border) and spent a lot of time with my grandparents in Slovakia. One day I'd like to bang on the doors of my friends regardless of the country. Other than that, I'd like to visit Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Greece & Turkey (I heard there are some 'rocks' there :brows:), Egypt, the US... wherever I get the chance, I'm not that picky.

22. Could you tell us something about the countries you have visited? Like the culture,
environment, etc.
Well, not much. The week I spent in the UK on a school trip, we did the usual sightseeing and in my opinion, a week is not long enough to 'notice' anything of any significance, more so if your time there is made by somebody else. As I said earlier, I'm not sure I'd ever be able to really consider Slovakia a foreign country, but a significant percentage of the culture is very similar to Czech so no big differences there.

23. What about your own country? What do you like about where you live?
I like the countryside. Practically never having been abroad I can't really compare the Czech rep/Slovakia to someplace else but I like the countryside. I like it that if you live in a city, you don't have to go far to be rid of the noise and rush of it (unless you happen to live in Prague but it's still not such a big city). I like hills and mountains, as there's a lot of those here. I also like the climate, we get 4 seasons, nothing too extreme (though I'm often complaining about the heat in summer :p ).

24. What of the people in the Czech republic? What makes them Czech?
Other than being overly fond of Czech beer? I suppose the Czechs are not too different from other peoples.

25. Whats your favourite season and why?
My fave seasons are autumn and spring, if I really had to chose between the two, I'd say autumn. I like the weather of those seasons, it's (usually) not too hot or too cold. In spring I like to watch the world turning green again. In autumn, I like the warm colours and I love walking through dry fallen leaves (shuffling through or kicking the leaves all over).

PART II

Personal Questions (continued)

26. Do you have a personal hero, or someone you look up to?
I don't have a personal hero but I have a person or two I look up to.

27. Where do you see the path you’re on taking you?
I don't know. I'd like to finish school and get a place of my own, find a job and find my spot on earth so to speak.

28. If you could wish one book out of existence, which book would you choose? (suggested by Basil)
Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky :p http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/jayellen/smileys/tomato.gif
I don't really mind the book, I just never managed to finish reading it and never been that way inclined, just not my cup of tea.

Favourites

29. What is your fav thing about the forum?
I like the book club, I just wish had more time to read with everything else I do during the days. I also enjoy some games, like The king of the hill (ME! :D), Song Title Game and others.

30. Who is your favourite author?
I don't have a favourite author, mostly if I read a book and like it or the author's style, I'd read more of the author but I don't think I can say that I have a favoutire one. Maybe Jeanette Winterson?

31. And your favourite book?
I don't have one of these either but some of those coming to my mind right now are: East of Eden by John Steinbeck, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Art & Lies and The.Powerbook by Jeanette Winterson, Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf ... I think that's enough for now

32. What kind of music do you enjoy?
I love music. I'd listen to almost anything that's not tearing my ears (and depending on my current mood). I like metal (power metal, symphonic metal, symphonic power metal), rock, not sure if it's a genre or not but I like the music of the 80s, I love orchestral soundtracks (Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Liza Gerrard, Alan Silvestri...), I like some classical music, too (I like strings, most of all the cello; and piano). I like hearing 'classical' instruments in modern music (here comes 'my' metal ). I don't mind some country, I like some pop songs... I don't like jazz.

33.Which are your favourite bands/singers/composers/etc.?
right now, in no particular oder: Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Tara MacLean, Within Temptation, Stratovarius, E.S. Posthumus

34.Tell us something about your favourite movie.
I like a lot of movies, don't have a favourite in particular. I like all kinds of movies, I like fantasy, sci-fi, historic movies, war movies, comedies, thrillers, romantic movies, used to like westerns, haven't seen any for quite some time though (unless you count Blazing Saddles ).

35. Your favourite game in the Games sub-forum?
King of the hill (ie ME!) and Song title game

36. Amazons or Dastardly Stans?
Amazons all the way! Shoot peas at Dasterdlies!

37. Any other favourites we should know about?
My fave Stargate SG-1 character is Sam Carter

38. Why is she your favourite character? Also tell something about Star Gate.
What's there about Sam Carter not to like? She's very smart (think genius when it comes to physics, her “stupid ideas” keep saving galaxies, just ask Thor ), she's loyal, funny, independent, strong, caring, human (not in that as opposed to alien way ) AND she hasn't killed Jack yet.
Now you really don't want to get me started about Stargate, you'd have a very hard time shutting me up . In short, it's a great show and anybody who doesn't hate sci-fi should watch it! </shameless advert>

39. What is your favourite smilie?
Only one? That's too harsh!
:p :D ;) :goof: :brow:... one of those

40. do you ever want to use new smilies say a bop or shiny red button smilie?
All the time!

And now, the most important question of them all
41. How do you like your turnips?

I have no idea whatsoever, is that thing actually edible? :p

Thank you for the interview
My pleasure.

Bavarian forest?
Nope, up in the north ;), Žitava/Zittau, and when visiting grandparents, we sometimes take a trip to Český Těšín/Cieszyn almost all the way east of the rep.

how come your English sounds so near-native like when you've only spent a week there? Can Czech English teachers work miracles?????
I've always read a lot of English and I guess I have a thing for languages but I have to admit that the first teacher I had for English in the 5th grade (11 years old) was very good and always had stuff for me to do if I finished before the others did so I was never bored and he was nice and I always tried to make him happy that I was finished already and that I filled in everything correctly, it made me feel nice that I was good at something. I think that it was him who helped me to grow to love English. All my elementary school English teachers were cool (I had 3). One of them always brought me a bilingual E.A. Poe book to read to keep me occupied so the first English text I ever read (aside of textbook stories about a family) was Poe's Masque Of The Red Death :) (I think it took me 3 months to read it :p)

Interview nominations
It is possible to nominate yourself or anyone else for an interview; however, all interviews are on a voluntary basis and as such it depends on the willingness of the person you have nominated whether it will proceed. Please do not give more than one suggestion at a time. Only the first nomination per member will be considered, so choose carefully who you would like to see interviewed.
The final decision as to who will be interviewed is up to the Lit-Net Town crier board of interviewers.
The Nominations are to be done by PM, so as not to clog up the thread with suggestions and such. Please contact either me or Pensive.

Well, but a very good way to increase the amount of brains.

1 Brain = 1 Cookie
2 Brains = 2 Cookies
3 Brains = 3 Cookies
And so on....

But beware, lots of brains can be a distress. Fights! Lots of fights amongst brains. *shudders*

An excess of brains can also make you an attractive target for the brain-eating zombies. That is why I keep my brain level so low. The zombies take one look at me and say, "Pfft! Look at that poor fellow! What a puny amount of brains he has! Why, it is not even worth the effort to crack open his skull! It is not even enough for a snack!"

So, Pensive, no thank you--no cookies for me!

Introductory questions

Taliesin (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/member.php?u=2662)
1. How are you today?

Quite well, thank you. But wasn’t that well last week.

3. How did you decide on your username?

We had already used the name Taliesin (a Welsh legendary/mythical bard) in some other forums, so we used the same on Lit-net.

4. Why did you initially join the lit-net?

We were searching for information about John Keats.

5. What would you say is the best aspect of the forum?

The people. And the fact that there is very little quarrel here despite the vastness of it.

6. How much time by average do you spend on lit-net per day?

Too much, we guess. About a bit less than hour?

7. How do you feel about smilies?

One can See a Sign of Heresy against the Nature of Tr00 Metal in their Mocking Smiles, whereas Everyone Knows that it is Metal to Look Angry and Furious and Thirsty for Blood and Not to Smile. Therefore, they should be Banned and Cut to Pieces with Blood Flowing out of them with Much Agony Included. Grrrrrrr and other metallistic noises.

No, really, we like them. Is there someone who doesn’t?

8. Being quite an old member, how do you feel the forum has changed?

It has grown a lot bigger. We don’t have time nor energy to check out all the topics. Sometimes we feel déjà vu- somebody has made a topic about something that was discussed already a year before so we have started ignoring quite a number of threads. For instance all the arguments in creationism and evolution seem to be used-up and are just re-cycled.
Plus, a lot of the old members have gone away- fool, amuse, verybadmom among others.

Personal Questions

9. What is your date of birth?

23. September of 1988

10. For all singles of lit-net, your marital status? :p

We’re free.

11. How would you describe yourself, your personality?

Wait, we have that wretched personality test right here… Aha! Introvert, intuitive, thinking, perceiving. Or something like that.
Other words to describe us – lazy as an old tomcat, intelligent, head-in-the-clouds, playful, good imagination and a bit loony.
“Strange? Yes. We are strange. Has anybody ever claimed otherwise?”

12.What do you do in RL? Student, work?

Student. Twelfth grade. Going to finish school this year.

14. Would you to tell us a bit about your various hobbies?

Yes, I would. We like to read, first.(we are not certain whether a topic this strange and foreign would be understandable to the forum members so we won’t even try to explain what it means :P)
And second, we are a role-player. Role-playing is often described like an improvisational play with roles and rules but without audience. And in the case of DD, without any costumes, requisites or actually anything that outwardly characterizes a play. Well, or that is the most common explanation to those who don’t know anything about the topic. But it is quite indescribable, actually.
Both being a player and being a Gamemaster are interesting – in the first you really become some other person , get the opportunity of some emotions and situations that you rarely would in real life. The second, being a game-master, is basically using your imagination, creating the setting and narrative, and you are actually probably in control and that is a very good position too.

15. Do you like sports, if so do you play sports yourself?

We are lazy, as mentioned above, so we aren’t into sports much.
But we like chess and bridge and swimming and bicycling. Occasionally.

16. What of music? Play any instruments?

Yes. Flute, recorder, classical guitar, jaw harp and triangle. :P Well, We guess that only the first three count and of those, we are fluent, if we are grammatically allowed to use the term, only with the flute. We can read music and improvise freely on it, whereas our skills are more limited on guitar and recorder.

17. Do you like to travel?

Well, a bit of travel sometimes is nice, but we are not very keen on big cities – we feel that we would get lost in them and/or be mugged or stuff like that. Plus, they all tend to look quite similar, as far as we have seen them.

18. Which countries have you visited?

Finland and Latvia.

19. Could you tell us something about the countries you have visited? .

They are quite similar to Estonia, really. Finland is better off, of course.

20. What about your own country? What do you like about where you live?

What We don’t like is the seasonal depression that tends to strike many of our friends around this time of the year.
On the other side of this, We really like how everything is so different around the year. The year, the seasons really affect you. You can’t just ignore them. Plus, there is still nature here, some of it even untouched – 40 per cent of Estonia’s territory is forest and 20 per cent is marsh.
The language is beautiful too. (there is a legend about a competition of the beauty of languages where Estonian won second prize with the phrase “Sõida tasa üle silla”)
And the people… well, there are lots of wonderful Estonians too. Yep. Certainly. We know many nice Estonians.

21. You have already mentioned before that Estonia has compulsory
military service. When will you have to enter? How long must you serve? How thrilled are you at having to do this? (suggested by Basil.)

We will have to enter – when we wouldn’t enter university, then in the next autumn.
However, we will go to university so one can get one to three years of extention for studies. The service is about nine months or something like that. We are not very thrilled about it and it wouldn’t hurt to get away with insanity, for example, but when we are accredited as mentally and bodily healthy then… well, since there is a certain neighboring country (won’t name names) that has grown very aggressive diplomatically and seems to have dreams of imperialism then it would be quite good to know how to handle a weapon.

22. Many of us would have read your poems in Poetry-post.com. I wonder if you are planning to write more?

No.
We don’t plan to write more.
If we should write anything somewhere, then it is purely impulsive, but we believe that we are not very good at poetry, especially in English.

23. We will like to know about your favourite form of poetry. (suggested by toni.)

Actually, We don’t much care about form. A good poem can be of any form.
Of course, there are many interesting metres around –like the hexameter of Homeros or the skalds metre in the sagas, but we like them basically because they give the text an interesting rhytm and characteristic, alliteration and all. There is some freeform poetry that plays with the language but is freeform and that we love and some poetry that doesn’t even play with the language, but that we still like.

24. What’s your favourite season? Why?

Are you aware that it is December now?
When we wait a day or two with this interview, then it will finally start to snow. (it has been an abnormally warm December this year) And then we will say that we like winter most. It will be finally cold, as it is supposed to be and snow will be falling slowly. Everything is asleep, so calm and cold, soft and frozen, no one seems to hurry.
But ask in February and we will be waiting for spring. Spring! Water! It will be flowing everywhere and you see how everything wakes up, how everything starts to bloom, there is so much energy around and the air is so clear, cold, but so brisk and clear and the wind in March is something that probably makes us catch a cold, but it is worth it.
And then comes the mud and you start slowly to tire of spring . There is no connection point between spring and summer, there is only May, and that is neither. Oh dear, May.
Summer is long and then there is the sun. Sometimes the night is only a few hours long. A few hours, can you imagine it? We can’t. We don’t remember sun anymore. Or wait, we think we saw it yesterday, didn’t we?
In August, the crickets come and August nights, that is something very beautiful.
And then it is September. School used to start then. Well, next year too, but then it will be university. Indian summer. End of long rest and things will start to change quickly. But the colors are so warm and the air is brisk and the slight mists and rains are somewhat mystical and you just want to get lost in the hills and small groves, only hoping that your feet won’t get wet. And there is still sun to warm your face, although it is not so warm anymore. But still, sun.
And our birth month.
October. Much harder stuff than September. There might still be colors, but there is lots of grey already. Grey. It is grim and hard stuff. Now rain seems only mystical when you are made of rougher materials and can ignore it. But there is still sun. We think. And you shouldn’t forget Bradbury, either. The Writer of The Great Autumn, as somebody said.
In Estonia, the end of October and the beginning of November vaguely form a time called the spirit-time, when Estonians used to think about their dead relatives. We still do that, although we don’t cover tables for them any more. But candles are still put on the windowsill.
In November the grayness reaches its maximum and there isn’t any snow yet, although Old Man Weather occasionally tries some snowfalls since October, already. But it won’t stay, probably, until the end of the month. Snow, to calm the mind and milden the seasonal depression and n ow we have reached the point where from we started before.
And you want us to choose?

25. Do you have a personal hero, or someone you look up to?

We look up to dissidents. Andrei Sahharov, Unknown Rebel, and especially Die Weiße Rose (if you haven’t heard about them, do a Wiki search or something). They were nonviolent, also. Oh, reminding us of Gandhi and his ahimsa.
We also look up to the whole Singing Revolution and its main figures and other non-violent revolutions.
About famous writers – we don’t know how they were as persons so we can’t tell whether we look up to them.

26. Tell us the mystery behind “we.” (suggested by Pendragon.)

It was just something we started to do and we have gotten used to it. (actually, if you like conspiracy theories, there is something crucially important about the way we started calling us “us”, but we have had a slight memory loss or we were brainwashed by KGB or something and don’t remember it any more, but sometimes in the middle of night we wake up with a smothered scream, half-remembering the grotesque details of the reason, but then we again fall asleep and will have forgotten it by the time when morning arrives)
But we really like the theories that people have made about it over the time, like
*royal we
*animist beliefs
*me and my ego
*me and my crow
*schizophrenia (our original idea)
and others.

27.Where do you see the path your on taking you?

Well, probably we’ll go to the university next year, but about other things:

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

J. R. R. Tolkien

Favourites

28. We can’t have an interview on a literature site without asking the
obvious questions, so who is your favourite author?

Let us think.
Strugatski brothers, Zelazny, Simmons, Pratchett, GRRM, Robin Hobb, Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman, Ursula K. Le Guin, De Lint, JRRT, Pelevin, Hargla, Jääskeläinen.
My, we ought to pick some who are not speculative fiction, shouldn’t we?
Then, Astrid Lindgren. Or Twain. Or Dostojevski. Or Hašek. Or Bulgakov, although he is really a speculative fiction writer. Ah, shucks, We can make some room for a genius.

29. And your favourite book?

“Someplace to be Flying”, “Song of Ice and Fire”, “Master and Margarita”, Shveijk, “A Night in the Lonesome October”, “Lord of Light”, Maksim Kammerer trilogy, Hyperion-tetralogy, Earthsea quartet, damn, there are many more.

30. What kind of music do you enjoy

Well, we are not very good at categorizing music, but most of the bands we listen to are lyrics-oriented, mostly mild rock, folk, pop, metal or punk. (well, that said a lot). We do like older Estonian folksong and sometimes (about once a week) meet with a group of people to sing those songs. We also sing tenor in the school choir. Song festival is coming this summer, you know?
We also like classical music. And old modes. We have a soft spot for the old modes.

31. Which are your favourite bands/singers/composers/etc.?

Oh dear.
Most of these will be a total mystery to you since they are Estonian bands, but here they go: Vennaskond, Dagö, Singer Vinger, Sõpruse Puiestee, Jäääär mainly. Also Somnambuul, Kiritöö, Metsatöll, Metro Luminal, Aapo Ilves, Tarmo and Toomas Urb and Simon and Garfunkel.
Of composers we like Grieg, Chopin, Mozart, Tormis, Tobias, Rahmaninov, Shostakovitš and JSB. The list is not complete though.

32. Tell us something about your favourite movie.

We guess that the movie that has impressed us most is “Donnie Darko”. We are not very good at talking about movies really, so we just suggest it.
We haven’t seen many movies, but here are some other movies we have enjoyed: “Cube”, “Good-bye, Lenin”, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, “Schindlers list”, “Butterfly effect”, “La vita e bella”, “Pi”
But there are so many legendary good movies that we haven’t seen but wish to see.

33. Your favourite food?

This, again depends of the moment, but as a substance that we are generally on good terms with: chocolate.

34. Your favourite drink?

Fresh mild apple juice, made straight from apples. (real apples, home-picked, not from the other side of Europe and covered with the whole Mendelevian table)

35. Your favourite game in the Games sub-forum?

2 truths and a lie, Brain Teasers, Poetry Contest, we used to like where you’re supposed to kill the person above you, and we absolutely loved the murder mysteries, the one where you were supposed to spoil the wish of the above person.

36. Amazons or Dastardly Stans?

This is an interesting question.

37. Any other favourites we should know about?

Crows, jackdaws and marshes.

38.What is your favourite smilie?

The  The reason behind this is is a person on another forum with the banana as his avatar. A person who can be very mean and sarcastic and witty. And very funny at the same time.
And it is a nice absurd smily in its own.
Hmm, and Stans Ye Olde Prophecy seems to hold a grain of truth in it.

And now, the most important question of them all

40.How do you like your turnips?

Raw, dripping of blood, still screaming of the pure agony of being ripped apart. Tr00 kvlt metal. And other such noises.

Thank you for the interview! :)

You’re welcome.

Oh I enjoyed that.:) I did not realize Tal was so young, so smart, and so talanted. Very good Tal. I must admit I do not know that much about Estonia, but you make it sound great. Actually my only knowledge (other than its geographic location) is the Estonian chess great Paul Keres, who I enjoyed following his games from my chess books when I was young and into chess. Great job to you too, Pensy for the interview.

Wow, from when did online personality tests start being so exact? If it would have been for me to describe Taliesin's personality, then it would have been the same words. Just a little more stress on: thinking, perceiving, head-in-the clouds, quite lazy but intelligent and I forgot to mention very good in maths. :)

(it has been an abnormally warm December this year)

Oh on the other hand, here the climate is quite cold. It is snowing quite a lot in the northern areas of Pakistan now a days. This is a bit strange...

Actually my only knowledge (other than its geographic location) is the Estonian chess great Paul Keres, who I enjoyed following his games from my chess books when I was young and into chess.

*sigh* Paul Keres, perhaps the strongest player never to become world champion. :D One of my favorite chess players.

Someplace To Be Flying reminds me of this:

And of course, this that you mentioned.

Introductory Questions

~ How are you today?
Fine and smilie :D thank you although it depends really on how you define today? Is it the today I write this the today YOU wrote this or the today someone reads this in two years?

~ Why did you choose "Nightshade" as your user name?
Keat’s ode on melancholy was going through my head at the time especially the lines

nor suffer thy forehead to be kissed
By nightshade, ruby fruit of Proserpine
And I just fell in love with those lines and then of course my RL name sort of means night anyway so thought it fitting, literary and real and just that little bit weird ( wasn’t there a cartoon character (my little pony I think) called Nightshade. It is just a good name.

~ What is the name you go by in real life?
YOU, it, smarty-pants, smelly I just answer to anything really but my real life first name is Leila (Lay-luh) yes like the Eric Clapton song or yes like Laylah and majnun/ Qiys wa Laylah if you’ve heard that story. That’s me. The darkness of the night, or Beauty of the darkness of the night.

~ Why did you initially join the lit-net?
Book club!!! Id got refused in RL and I was sulking plus a place where people who love reading come how could I say no so here I am completely and utterly addicted, a hopeless case with a ridiculous post count.

~ What would you say is the best aspect of the forum?
Errr can I say me?? No seriously ME! Im the best aspect of the forum… ok maybe not bt it was worth a try…. huh well generally the people for what is a forum without members? Ohh an the mods and well General chat. But that’s my favourite aspect I guess the best aspect is that we can read what we are talking about when we are discussing books or blogs those are great…ok Im stuck! Its all good!

~ We all know that you use smilies a lot. But what would like to know is why do you use them so much?
Uh coz I like then maybe…DUH! Well they always make me smile and I love smiling so why not? Also I guess I’m not very good at expressing my self in words the smilies make it easier in someways, I mean lets face in on a forum we’ve managed to cut out the major form of communication; body language and expressions.

~ Will you admit being addicted to them? :p
Addicted-shmickted Im not addicted I don’t neeeeed use them in fact I don’t put smilies in EVERY post I post, well unless your counting the 2 in my sig line which is just unfair. I just think that the world would be a better place if we were all more like the smilies.
~ Is there any smilie you hate? If so, then which one is that?
Not hate exactly but I really disapprove of political smilies like these http://www.websmileys.com/sm/violent/niko_saddampropaganda.gif
And the lets kill Sadam ones, smilies should be about happiness and a different way of communicating not war, although the occasional bopping smilie is good to keep people in place. http://www.websmileys.com/sm/violent/sterb292.gif

Personal Question

~ How old are you ?
19 4 months and some odd days and a handful of hours I was born on Wednesday 9th of September 1987 at about 1430 GMT.

~ How would you describe yourself, your personality?
I don’t know, why do people always ask this question? I suppose I’m a practical optimist always hope for the best but set really low expectations for myself and people generally. I’m also manically loyal, Bill Sykes’ dog had nothing on me and that I suppose is my biggest fault and my greatest strength in one.
Im also not at all organised no matter what you’ve been told by deluded people. I live in organised chaos and that’s the way I like it, I cant stand tidiness and pristine as if none is living there neatness but I like to have a plan. Always have a plan or two or three.
~ What do you do in RL? Student, work?
Well both actually, I’m at University studying to be a real-grown-up-can-do-everything-librarian, as some said to me the other day, in the mean time Im just A lowly Saturday Library Assistant and even lower super duper Casual library assistant in my holidays.

~ Could you tell us a little more about what you do?
Well at the moment I’m only a library assistant so I shelve books, I join people I smile A LOT. Do shelf-checks which is when a book has been requested by a user in another library and needs to be found a packed away for the van drivers to collect, hide from ‘my’ weirdoes, smile some more, deal with general stock rotation so find books to go somewhere else lable them all pack them, unpack and process and shelve what we get it. Deal basic enquiries and my specialty Im looking for this book and I think its green and its about… or A mermaid book by someone who starts with a k, or can you tell me what books were on this years orange list? Or You had a lot of books by an author and they were all on the shelf they were crime I think and they had a big picture of the author on the back with a dog… ( true enquiry I swear and while every one else was going  I knew the answer was Ed McBain )

And of course you get to discuss books, the weather and the local politics all day what more could you want as well choclate a Christmas .

~ Would you to tell us a bit about your various hobbies?
What various hobbies? I read and I day dream and make massive life plans (that are bound to fall through) and that’s about it. Oh and baking, I love baking. And sewing occasionally but that’s tied into the day dreaming watching things appear out of scraps is really good for relaxing and its about the one thing where my plans actually come through and my sisters cant do it. Which reminds me I designed my very first quilt patch from scratch on Friday, and so far except for accidently reversing it its seem to be coming along great.

~ Do you like sports, if so do you play sports yourself?
Hehe no actually I don’t, I hate running/jumping etc etc and I don’t see the point in watching other people run around and get all sweaty and smelly, having said that I am playing basketball now and I love to swim and go on loooong walks.

~ Do you like to travel?
OH YES… I LOVE travelling  , well except by car or bus since I’m prone to car sickness. Trains, planes, boats (I REEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY want to go on a proper cruise, I wish sometimes that liner travel hadn’t just become a luxury, but was a viable alternative to flying.  I even love the general stresses involved, you could say I thrive on them.

~ Which countries have you visited?
Goodness lets see wait a second does lived get included? OH well, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Dubai, The Arab emirates, Qatar (not sure if that wasn’t just a passing through transit flight thing though, Jordan, Egypt France, Germany, England, Wales, and maybe Scotland, but not positive. Oh how could I forget Sweden & the US. Though a lot of these I only have vague memories of since it was before I was in proper school or during the War and schools were closed and it was an elaborate distract the kids so they don’t remember what was on the news and that dad isn’t here thinngy.

~ You have lived in both Egypt and England. Has it affected you to live in two different nations? If so, then how? ( suggested by miss tenderness)
Very good question Taleen, yes but I think it goes deeper than that being from 2 different places makes you look at things differently I think. I am unable to look at things from only one angle I always end up thinking about the other side of the story and a terrible habit of sticking up for the underdog no matter what which has got be into emotional scrapes more than once in my relatively short life.

Did you find it difficult to settle in England when you came from Egypt? (suggested by miss tenderness)

I think I found it hard to sleep too quiet and the sun is up till 11 o’clock what kind of place has sun till all hours of the night anyway?
But I guess this wasn’t the biggest move culture shock, strange to say Id already done one massive move and I was older when we did this one. Plus I was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too excited about having a seeming endless supply of free books to choose ( a library) to worry too much. There was a thing where I was going to back at the end of the first year go to Uni in Egypt instead get my tourism licence but that fell through but it was always a possibility still is I suppose although Id be so much older than my course-mates, if I did that and Id have to learn French which is what stopped me the first time round. I don’t think so not really not for me anyway it was my what 6th school and I had the new person routine sorted by then so I guess except for the little things like the general marketing of ‘sex’ the missing of decent BBC (BBC world is amazing while the UK BBC is just …) Having said that I don’t think my younger sisters as at the most this was their 3rd school faired half as well as me.

~ We all know that you are a Muslim then how do you manage to follow the religion in a country which is predominately non-Muslim? Do you feel an outsider? (suggested by Virgil)
I just do I guess, although some of the questions I get asked are enough to send me into fits of laughter like why are you wearing a bandage on your head ( a little 4 year old) but it is difficult to explain and I’m ashamed to say that not anywhere as good a muslim as I could be and things do slide, but generally will power a killer conscience and a general dislike of parties/going out anyway and a complete utter belief that I’m right and it doesn’t really matter if I’m not. An outsider? Sometimes I suppose not often but you occasionally meet the out right bigoted racist religiost( is that right) idiot. And then there is the whole romantic love culture thing as if your not complete without a boyfriend/girlfriend that does tend shove me aside and in a way worries me because if I was in Egypt Id already be started down the road of looking around for husband not properly but just keeping my eyes and ears open and going hummmm maybe that one maybe that one maybe that one, err not him:sick: etc. I suppose the reason I chose to come to Manchester is the massive Muslim population and hoping to feel a little less obvious and outsiderish but as a whole it hasn’t really worked because I don’t fit in with the ‘sloppy muslims’ ‘excuse me but NO I don’t think one little glass of alchol wont hurt or a puff of weed or some cocaine :S’ or with the super extra strict people ‘yes I agree that we are all peace and love etc but do we have to pester people about it or get on our high horse at every little slight.’

~ Which country (ies) would you like to visit in the future? And why?
Visit or live? Ive got itchy feet you see, well Japan (sound super cool plus all that fish!), Australia I think it might be fun having winter in the summer and I might finally get my scuba diving licence (although someone recently told me that Australians tend to be very prejudiced against Muslims (??)), Canada Northern lights, although kilted says I can see them from Scotland and I want to go there too because a) they have a decreasing number of professionals and b) I just want to. Oh I wanted to go to Gibraltar but my mum says its naff (she lived there for a while) to outsiders, where else… oh the Netherlands (I want to see the tulips at the what’s it called Aimus??) and I want to live in converted windmill and I figure Holland would be a good place to find one. Oh and Prague although hopefully that’s already in the pipes.
So yepps lots of place I want to go.

~ What do you like about England, the country you are currently living
in?
I guess I love the rain, it’s the desert in me I can never see rain without thinking it’s a miracle well if we are talking rain, drizzle is just a pain. Oh and the libraries got to love the libraries and endless books shops that actually sell books I want to read—need to point out my Arabic reading is basic and limited to ‘proper’ Arabic I can read written spoken arabic so modern books are difficult. Jammy doughnuts …no warm jammy doughnuts are the mint. Oh yes they are gorg. What else do I like about England? The funny looking houses with pointy roofs and chimneys. And the way people actually do talk about the weather all the time. I don’t know I just like it. But the way I’m living now is great I’m in the city that is so alive and noisy and yes dangerous in the week and then I go home and the country is so quiet and comfortable and like the proverbial tortoise slow and steady and sure. I like lying in bed under an open skylight and watching the sun take hours and hours to set in the summer or the moon move across the sky, did you know it does actually move I never realised that when I lived in a flat!

~ Do you have a personal hero, or someone you look up to?
Not really, I’m too wishy washy and I admire different people at different times. Mother Teresa, Joan of Arc, Shagaret-el-Dur, Bint el shat, Bint ka’abb, Agatha Christie who despite having dyslexia wrote amazing books.

~ Martial status? :p
Single single single not sure I really want to change that despite the occasional moments of panic (such as above).

~ Which is your most prized possession and why is it so significant to
you? (suggested by zanna)
Now this is a genuialy out and out hard question my goodness… actually I know it’s the quilt my mum made when my first sister was born..iuts falling to pieces at the moment but once Ive fixed Ill put a picky up. MY mum doesn’t belive me But I rember her making that blanket it has an elephant a giraffe and alion on it the giraffe because its my favourite animal an elephant because elephants are my mums favourite animall and I was her little e’phlant and a lion for L. That blanket meant to me that even though my muumy was having a new baby she loved ME and I was still special. I suppose that blanket symbolise my mums love and if I lost that I guess I would be inconsolable, luckily for me its an adult size blanket and not too babyish…plus its light enough for summer I love that blanket.

Favourites

****These are all too difficult I don’t have favourites I’m a very level person.

~ Your favourite book and novel?
Nope I have a favourite book by certain authors but a general favourite noo too limiting and I haven’t found it as yet.

~ Amazons or Dastardly Stans?
Neither I’m just letting them fight it out and walking from side to side as a nurse to gather intelligence until my army is ready and then I shall take over and FINALLY claim the hill!

~ Your favourite games in the games-subforum?
I don’t know really I don’t spend that much time there anymore not really, I guess stories with holes has always been my favourite, followed by the word association threads and recently the brainteasers are good, How cant I forget king of the hill?

~ Favourite movie?
Don’t know seen too many

~ Favourite singers/composers?
Im supposedly tone death cant hear the difference between tunes howeer I can tell when its Elton John playing, and I can usually recognise the opening to some of his songs but mostly music is just random combinations of numbers to me.
I looooooove John Denver’s songs but mostly for the words Ill admit same for the Elton Johns that I like currently semi addicted to Dash Confessional, Matchbox 20 and The feeling. The few Johnny Cash songs I heard I liked and my sister says I also Like Mae but Im not sure about that then there is a random cd my sister has on loop (not Mae) she wont tell me what it is but they are good.
But most of all I love themes songs and carton film songs, Jungle book, Pochuntis the 2 full length Beauty and the beast films, Pinocchio, sleeping beauty, snow white, Mulan, Anastastia, The tom and jerry movie just a few of the films I’m sad enough to know all words to the songs of. The problem is I don’t forget the words ever and I just need to hear part of it and it’ll be round my head for days. Oh James Taylor, the eagles and Don Mclean also have very good songs.

~ Favourite thread in the whole forum? :D
What a question I bet Aimus is responsible for this one… I don’t know, I like them all. Can I just immortalise my greatest nemesis the annoying Mark thread and its finally DEAD!! RIP and all that but its gone. Some will shed tears and some won’t. Err favourite thread, favourite thread… I don’t know someone else tell me what thread have I been living in recently??

And now, the most important questions of them all

Whats your favourite smilie?
I don’t have one I love them all. Although if I could just get a proper ((g)) smilie Id be happy and you’d see that one probably more than any other this is one of my top 15 though

How do you like your turnips?
Well lots of ways as long as its not pickled. Stewed, mashed, in casseroles I have a few recipes I’m working through at the moment but my favourite of the month is mashed with Swede.

Thank you for the interview, Night! :)

I like your name, Laila. I know of the story of Laila-Majnu, a whole lot of movies have been made based on this story, but I didnt know Laila meant - Beauty in the Darkness of the Night. Its a name I have heard quite often.

~ We all know that you are a Muslim then how do you manage to follow the religion in a country which is predominately non-Muslim? Do you feel an outsider? (suggested by Virgil)
[...]

You know, one of the things that amazed me the most when I moved to England is the amazing number of Muslims (well at least here as Nighty said) and during the first month or so I just couldn't help noticing and thinking about all those women with veil, wondering how it feels to be a Muslim in the UK which has such a different culture, for example towards alcohol... I found it fascinating to see such a huge number of Muslims being Muslim (I mean, in Italy there are certainly many, but I've seen women with veils maybe twice there, while here...) and the double culture they have (full veil/English accent) etc... So that's why I always ask questions to Nighty because I think she knows that I'm just curious

Koa
01-21-2007, 07:55 AM
A bit off topic but about the librarian... do you think I can be something like that even if I haven't studied for that? (I know at the presentation of my MA they said that something about library is a possible career, I suppose taking care of the Russian section or something). Well I'm not even sure what a librarian does, besides the obvious stuff. Even if technically I am a library assistant/receptionist at the language centre.
I was thinking about it lately cos I know other ppl that did similar studies, I just didn't really know it existed back when I started Uni, it certainly doesn't exist where I studied and I've never really heard of it anywhere so it must be buried into some other path if you see what I mean.
Or maybe I can take an MA in library things after this :D And then one in translation so I have a few careers open :D But by that time no one would want me anymore cos I'd be 35 ;)

Nightshade
01-21-2007, 07:58 AM
No actually most people do library that way via the MA later when they are in their 30s whatdo you mean 35? Your only 20-somthing! actualy I thing you just need a degree to become a librarian but you need a CILIP recognised degree to get a well paid job in libraries in the UK:D:D
