I recently read Alas, Babylon - by Pat Frank and was wondering if anyone has opinions or comments to share.

I found the book well-written and interesting, though some of the military terms challenging to follow. Somehow, the whole story seemed irrelevant today, though it does raise good points. I would find it unlikely that Russia would drop millions of H-Bombs on the U.S., but I could be wrong. :brow:

Have you anything to add?

I read Alas, Babylon a while back, and admit few of the specifics still stand out in my memory. I read it mostly for entertainment and it did succeed in that area. While the circumstances surrounding this story are very dated, I think the story of survival is one that never gets old. The big "what if" is always exciting.

yes, I suppose I do agree. it just doesn't seem to come quite home for me. maybe if it was the Iranians or Koreans dropping nuclear bombs it would be more real to me, but those countries are so small. I suppose I recognize most with their struggle to survive, making do when everything is gone.

RJ, perhaps you would enjoy Oryx and Crake by Atwood. I found it a better read than Frank's novel and it is set in a very believable near future.

One book of similar subject matter on my to-read list is On the Beach. I will try to let you know how that one turns out.

'On the Beach' is getting my reccomendation. I thought it was excellent. It really dealt with how different people dealt with the idea that they would die. These are the people dieing of radiation poisoning not of the actual bombs. You saw as these people just waited for months to die. Very excellent read, and I reccomend it to everyone interested in the genre.

Tend, my copy of On the Beach came by UPS this morning. I plan on reading it very soon.

By the way, welcome to the forum! I dare you to *try* to take the hill (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17318).
