Piglet, it was made into a movie. Here's the web site: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046247/

Here's something on the author: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_C._Douglas

And here's Amazon's write up on the novel: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395957753/104-0948322-1247968?v=glance&n=283155

Hope that helps. I'v never read the novel nor seen the movie.

Thank you Virgil. I can see why there would be two copies in 3 suitcases of old books some of my great aunts and uncles had. I was curious because of the fact that there were two copies. I may have to read one sometime, as they sound interesting, but, there's too many books, and too little time.

Marcellus is a tribune in the time of Christ. He is in charge of the group that is assigned to crucify Jesus. Drunk, he wins Jesus' homespun robe after the crucifixion. He is tormented by nightmares and delusions after the event. Hoping to find a way to live with what he has done, and still not believing in Jesus, he returns to Palestine to try and learn what he can of the man he killed.

The Robe is a 1942 historical novel about the Crucifixion written by Lloyd C. Douglas. The book was one of the best-selling titles of the 1940s. It entered the New York Times Best Seller list in October 1942, and four weeks later rose to No. 1. It held the position for nearly a year. The Robe remained on the list for another two years, returning several other times over the next several years including when the movie version was released in 1953.

It was an excelent excelent film, kind of cheesey at parts, but I liked it.
I read a book called "The Spear" and I have totally forgettn the author's name but I think it was the same fellow. It was based on the same principal: the life of the soldier (who peirced Christ's side) before the incedent rather than after it. I like historical fiction but I better stop typing now before I rant on.
