Hi, this if my first post in the P&P forum. :)
I have a question about how the book ends.
Are there 3 characters who deserve what they get at the end of the book? Should the things that happened to them happen? Does everything fit?
Thanks, I would love to see opinion on this.

Hi Ichbinian,
Though I am not sure which 3 characters you means, I do have a similar feeling about the ending of P&P.
Wichham deserves some kind of punishment; So does Lydia.

I agree with francis, that Wickham and Lydia deserve to be punished and are in the end. Also Charlotte, in a way kind of gets punished for marrying for convenience rather than love.
Are those the characters you mean Ichbinian?

I can't figure out which 3 characters you mean.
Is this an essay question you have to answer for a school assignment?
What do you mean by punishing a character?? Do you actually pay attention to what is written. Consider the time when it was written, women did not work especially gentlewomen. Do you blame Charlotte for her choice, she had many siblings and was also 27 or so,her future would have been as housekeeper to her own family. Perhaps she seized an opportunity that arose and you could see it as scheming. If you see it as punishment you are looking through Lizzie's eyes. Charlotte has the situation under her own control, she has a future created, in her own words "she is not romantic". As for Wickham he does get his punishment it's Lydia... and Lydia will need to grow up before she will understand what she has done.

Generally speaking, I find Pride and Prejudice to be a realistic book
(though Mr. Darcy is a bit too perfect in his unconditional love).
In my opinion, the way the book ends seems very realistic to me.
Nothing happens that seems unlikely or "undeserved" -
though we have to remember that life is not fair and
people don't always get what they deserve.
Frankly, if Wickham got what he deserved, it would not have been
10,000 pounds, and rich relatives to mooch off of for the rest of his life.
But that's how gamblers are. They're extremely lucky.
Even that is not unrealistic or unlikely.
I would like to have seen him rot in a dungeon,
but that would never happen in an Austen story.
What is your opinion of the end of the book?
Did it not end in the way you expected?

I think the three characters who are meant must be Jane, Lizzy and Lydia...
I agree that Wickham isn't punished > he gets the money and that was all he was looking for in the first place, he gets exactly what he wants.
The book ended exactly the way you expected it to end: sooo Jane Austen! Lizzy falls in the love with the one person she thought she'd never fall in love with! It's practically the same with Emma & Knightley and Marianne (from S&S) & Brandon!
