View Full Version : Can YOU be a murderer?

I just watched in the TV one program talking about a murder. The murdered is a young guy who is a Net addict. He came to know another person online with the name of Kathy. They developed a strong kinda relationship. The two managed to meet in Kathy's house after this long acquaintance. Surprisingly, Kathy was a guy and a murderer! The FBI found the body in an excluded farm and after long investigation they checked the murdered's PC and found many saved files of chatting and emails from Kathy. One email was about the meeting which happened to be on the same day of the crime.
This is a real story, I found it striking enough for everybody not to trust anyone OR some people on line.
Hope I did not create a gloomy mood by this story. The test down was emailed to me and, though it's absolutely just for fun lets see who you are?

Oh, well I got it correct. Better go sharpen that pretty machete hanging on the back of the door
i . . . um, didn't get it correct . . . (hides gun behind back)
i don't like stories like that. they make you distrust eveyone you meet on the internet, a lot of whom are actually good people . . .

I love it when I'm right............ :brow:
I just can't look at kathy's post the same ever again though :eek2:
the reason I got it right is because I already knew the question and the answer before hand, I'm not telling what I said the first time I got the question...

Agree with Mir. One story should never be a standard by which you measure the universe. Most of the people I know Online are great people, and it also is very likely for anyone to meet someone who ends up harming them without having to have met Online. The web is just a tool to help people connect, just like TV, phone, fax, and letters.

One story? A while ago there was a case in Germany where one man actually ate another. They also had met each other over the internet.
And there are plenty of other such stories around. But of course, that means very little since such murders have been happening before the internet existed.
Ad topic: I didn't get it right. Mostly because I was thinking how little the one thing has to do with the other and ... how one would never be able to solve this, were that a case given out in an exam.
AimusSage

The cannibal's victim volunteered to be eaten, but I'll admit, the internet is no different from any other form of communication. You have to be careful with total nutcases that try to kill you, unfortunately, on the internet, it's not so easy to tell someones intentions. It's easier to tell someones hostile intentions if they run after you in the street with a butchers knife yelling "Die, you slimey alien from Mars, die!".
Ofcourse, if you are an alien from Mars, it might be advisable to not get out as much, for it might invoke such reactions in otherwise ordinary people. Really, I should know. :)
RJbibliophil
05-28-2006, 07:08 PM
Are YOU suggesting you are an alien from mars?
I have heard the same story of a man in Germany advertising to eat another human. Some guy volunteered willingly. I think it must be true.
I got it right, but I saw a glimpse of the answer, about this much: "She was hoping that" and that gave me a clue, and I guessed it. So, only half.
I have heard that you should meet online people in rather safe public places where other people are around, and let some people know you will be meeting someone.

Pfft. As if one could possibly presume to categorize the mentalities of the human race into "normal" and "psychopathic" on the basis of a single question. Until I hear otherwise, that question and its context are an urban legend to me, and nothing more.
Virgil
05-28-2006, 11:44 PM
It sounded like an urban legend to me too, Robin. But I have seen on TV a lot of irreputable people on web sits, especially luring girls. I have not noticed anyone on lit net that might fit such a description.
Taliesin
05-29-2006, 01:07 AM
Well, yes, it sounds like an urban legend, but the place from where we read it, mentioned that this test had actually been done to many serial murderers and normal people and serial killers tended to guess it way more often than the normal people.
This note could of course be an urban legend also.
ShoutGrace
05-29-2006, 01:24 AM
I think that it is plausible that serial killers could answer the question in that fashion more often than non-serial killers. But I agree with Robin as to the necessary "psychopathic" distinction.
p.s. The test says that I am not a serial killer/psychopath. The final nail in the coffin.

Well, obviously Internet predators exist, but there's neither name nor institution to suggest that the "study" has any credence whatsoever--merely "famous American psychologist."
smilingtearz
05-29-2006, 07:02 AM
does that imply that all of it may be farce?
Logos

While the reality of internet predators *is* a real issue, this particular email, wow! changed slightly but still making the rounds since 2002, claiming "A one-item psych test will reveal the psychopaths in your life" is a hoax and full of innacuracy.

No, we did not blow it up... Well, not exactly... We set a somewhat excessive (yeah, right  ) charge of plastic explosives off, and there was this outhouse some 200m away. Er... To make a long story wonderfully short, we managed to create a most impressive
BOOOM
The outhouse promptly fell apart.... The fact that it was was occupied, by our C.O, no less, complicated matters a wee bit.... Clearly a case of finding yourself in deep s... Well, you know.

You know what? I think that a psychopath would actually be less likely to answer this question correctly. A psychopath lacks empathy by definition, and in order to get the question right you need to empathize with the girl.
Empathize is a word, right?

Yep.
empathy is the imaginative putting of yourself in others’ shoes, being able to identify with their feelings; sympathy involves supporting or at least understanding the plight of others. You can be sympathetic without necessarily being empathetic; sympathy may require only pity, whereas empathy would require first your imagined identification with the sufferer and might not require sympathy as well

Well, I got it right. I'm not a psycho, I write mysteries. Logically, there were two reasons: either the sister had taken up with the guy and that was why she couldn't find him (and when she found out she removed her competition by killing her sister) or she hoped he would attend another funeral. The simple solution is often the correct one. I would type her as more of a cunning killer than a psycho, she planned it out, and everything went according to plan, meaning that she read her intended target correctly and knew how he would react. My two cents worth, anyhow. Um, you didn't see anything... ;) :brow:

I'm delighted to see you guys taking this to more intellectual level, discussing how we take people whom we come to know online. i think that everything should have limits. I trust people who seem to be trustworthy but meeting !!
distincting people as psychopath and normal can not be taken seriously in this test, after all it's an email info without even giving the name of the American psychologist. So i agree with Robin .But the story i narrated is a true one docummented in the FBI .
PS: i did not get the answer right ,so
It 'll be nice if u accept my invitation for all of you .PLZ who got the answer right do not join us -your insightfulness will ruin my PLAN.

Claes, do you by any chance have compulsory(sort of) military service in Sweden? They do in Norway. Because if you did, I would not find this story unusual in the least if there was a year of compulsory military training.

As you say this kind of carry-on is not unusual. Things tend to happen when you bunch a lot of young blokes together like that. I don't know about today though: This happened in the late 70's...

Haha. Well, my Father has told a little of military training, (late 70's) they greased the hinges of the gates before the last day, to be sure they would be able to leave!
My cousin had training just a few years ago, and he told of when they were on some sort of skiing trip, and the group he was in crossed right into Sweden, of course, they were in the middle of no where, in the snow in the mountains, but it is still sort of funny to have military crossing right into Sweden.
BTW, I heard this a few days ago, "What is the only good thing that the Swedes have that the Norwegians don't? Good neighbors." Of course, I have no idea if the Swedes have a similar jesting opinion of Norwegians.

I've been chuckling over this Swedish/Norwegian exchange. Both myself and my parents were born and raised in the US, but my family on one side is Swedish, and on the other Norwegian. When I was growing up I found it hilarious that, without being aware of it, both sides would tell me the exact same jokes about the other, meaning that my Norwegian grandfather (mother's side) would make a joke about Swedes and on a seperate occasion my Swedish grandmother (father's side) would tell the same joke but make it about Norwegians. It was always good natured joking though, which I liked.

heh...If I were a psychopath would I not lie about the test results to lur everyone into a false sense of security...but in telling this would rule me out...therefore making me the most likely by shear force of confusing logic...so... :D
heh, I think the interesting thing about the internet thing is this phenomenon, I think we think about it more online than in "reality" because we can not see one another, but what would we think if we bumped into eachother in the street? I suppose the problem is that humans are ultimatly aggressively individualistic, and deep down view others and their actions as if they were analyzing themselves.
heh, actually, i thought about that . . . what would it be like if two of us randomely met and had no idea that we were friends on the forum because we didn't know what each other looked like? i wonder if we would become friends just the same?
though i don't get what you meant by us being "aggressively individualistic".

by aggressively individualistic, I mean we all interperet events and meetings from our own point of view...or rather from our slf analysis based on our understanding.
