i'm sure a lot of us here have read dan brown's famous (and controversial)novel THE DA VINCI CODE. they have made a movie about it---and:
was it shown in your area?
what did you think of the movie?

I'm not aware of whether it's being shown here or not . . . I never have enough money to go to movies anyway, so I try not to pay attention to which ones are out.

i started the thread, so i may as well post my answer to my questions.
the dvc movie is being shown here in the philippines with an r-18 rating. it has been showing for a week and there are still so many going against its showing. it's actually banned from manila (our nation's capital). but though i know i won't be allowed inside the theater (not that they are that strict anyway) we managed to get a (pirated) copy of it. my take? i liked the book better.

It is being shown in my area but I haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure if I will see it in the theatres but I like Tom Hanks so I may eventually rent it.

It's being shown in my area, and I've alread seen it. I'd go see it just to spite all the stupid people who want to ban it. It's amzing that in 21st century there are still people like this.
Tha movie was OK, but nothing special. I think that neither Tom Hanks nor Audrie Tautou fit their roles. Certainly Tom Hanks is not an intellectual type. Paul Bettany did a good job playing Sylas.

I went some days ago, too, but rather by accident than on purpose as I originally wanted to see Brokeback Mountain which happened not to be shown that evening for what reason so ever...
As Boris has mentioned, I agree that the movie is a bit colourless. I think it might be more interesting to watch if you haven't read the book before. However, I liked the fact that French was spoken in part of the scenes which was only translated by subtitles. Gave me a chance to benefit at least a bit from the time spent in the theatres by trying to understand without reading along ;)

Well, i have grown so tired of hearing people rack down on Dan Brown, about it being a terrible book. I really think one has to take it as it is, a piece of fiction!!! In the bookstore it's on the same shelf's as all the other crime books, so get over the religious thing!!! phew, mini-rampage.
anyway, i have a friend who for some ridiculous reason swore never to read the books on what he obstinately called principle... silly. so i invited him, against his wishes to the film, and afterwords he admitted that it was a great plot, which it is! admittedly, the character's weren't great, not perfect, but hey, Ian McKellen is utterly charming, n'est pas?

Didn't care to go and give them full price, but was forced to. Had read the bad reviews. Well, as an adventure film, wasn't as bad as expected except for a couple strange and unnecessary moments. Straightforward acting -- what do you expect? -- they were trying to play against histrionics. The main idea regarding Jesus behind it is messed up, which folks from all religious persuasions contend, plus it even got the Opus Dei PR machine oiled and running well on talk shows. Now we can thankfully put it to rest and address some real issues in the world.

Yeah, the book was better. And the book was okay. Funny enough, my sister went to see it on opening night at midnight, and there were protestors even then. I think that if the movie was not publicized for its controversy so much, then it would not have made as much money as it did. I like Tom Hanks, but I would not say it was his best role. The parts in the book that I found most exciting, did not have me as excited during the movie. But oh well, it was okay.
i didn't see it yet . . . i heard it was pretty bad. i liked the book a lot, but i did wish it had been a bit more historical . . . now i'm all confused about the facts! : )

I am so tired of Dan Brown, unfortunately, 'cause I liked his books. I won't see the movie, not a fan of Tom Hanks, especially in this kind of role.
Needed someone else, who do u think would have been better suited than Hanks? Anybody?

the movie's showing in my town- Melbourne Australia. I went to see it before I read the book and thought it was a bit melodramatic. Big music, big hystrionics. Anyway- it got me a bit confused cos I wasn't sure what they were trying to get at in the movie. Once I read the book after it made sense, but there were things missing in the movie that I liked in the book, plus I wasn't as excited at some parts in the movie. Oh well... Tom Hanks did a really good job I reckon- better than Audrey (but then, I do like Tom Hanks). People should totally get over the whole religious thing, its a story for gods sake!!
I give the movie :thumbs_up :thumbs_up :thumbs_up three out of five thumbs ups. ;)

ha ha! we were just talking about this on the bus this morning! we discounted a lot of people - Tom Cruise, no, Ben Afleck, no - tom Hanks would be good if he was younger. it needs someone sort of scholarly . . . but also handsome ; )
Indiana Jones? :D (aka Harrison Ford :p)

I thought it was quite good (although it would take a special effort to make an Audry Tautou movie that I wouldn't enjoy). I haven't read the book.

I have not read/seen the book/movie nor do I plan to. It's (almost) funny how seriously so many people took it, and I am glad the movie isn't as big of a success as it was expected to be. Perhaps this will quiet it down or show people how stupid the lies really are (or, rather, how stupid they are for even considering that this fictional book could be true).

ditto to Boris239.
Although, I can comment on the audience where I saw it. They were mostly thoughtful and respectful. There was probably one elderly lady who made a rude guffaw when Langdon, Neveu were with Teabing in his study, and mention was made about the supposed relationship between Jesus and Mary, which I, for one, do not find objectionable. In fact, maybe it was true. In any case, I left thinking, "whewww... thank God some jerk didn't start a scene. Lord, protect me from your followers!"
It wasn't a great movie, but Hanks does improve with each role, Tautou was hardly recognizable from her Amelie years, and the story did pose some thought provoking questions. See it, what the hell!
