The name's spelt "Stendhal". You could also try his real name, "Marie-Henri Beyle".

Hello, samah.
Unfortunately, I have read no works by Stendhal, though I have intended on reading some of his works for some time now. If you visit this site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stendhal), it share a lot of information about Stendhal's biography and works.

I heard that the title refers to the red uniforms of French soldiers and the black robes of priests. but I also heard that that might not be accurate.

Ahh, Another classical French writer.
I'm reading Gustave Flauberts Madame Bovary, at the moment.
Still I'm always on the lookout for good titles.

If you like a lot of French literature, novelists particularly, I would highly recommend reading anything by Honoré de Balzac, particularly The Black Sheep - truly amazing!

I just want to thank you all for these information about Stendhal especially mono ,I opened the website and there are alot of information about Stendhal and his works , and yes I'm interested in the french literature and the russian literature as well and I've read almost all Dumas works but I've never heard about Honore de Balzac and
I'll try to read his novel " The Black Sheep " as soon as I'll find it , and I do recommend you reading " The Red And The Black " Its wonderful and thats also for you Theshizznigg .
And Xamonas I think your explanaition about the title is true because " Julian" the main character in the novel was always wearing a black robe .
Again Thank you all people .

I've read "Le Rouge Et Le Noir", too, but I have to admit that I didn't like it that much.
What I loved of French literature was Guy de Maupassant's "Bel Ami". I think that is a really fabolous book.
And who also is a great French writer is Théophile Gautier. I love his stories a lot.
