I have a likely ignorant question about 'Annabel Lee,' Poe's poem to his wife, Virginia Clemm.

It's a lovely poem but does anyone know why did he uses the name Annabel Lee? Simply because it went with the rhythm and rhymed?

Many people seem to have wondered about who Annabel Lee was. Some think it was his wife. Others suggest that it vas a girl called Elmira , who was Poes lover. She outlived him though. Others think that the poem is all fiction. Poe , to my knowledge, never said anything about who Annabel Lee symbolized, or if she does .

I have a nice link to more info on Poe. Maybe you can find something useful there.

Becareful what you read about him though, there's a lot of strange stuff about him out there.(some unreliable) Kind of goes along with his style. Nobody even really knows how he died.

Annabel Lee is one of Poe's most memorable poems, The last stanza, in my opinion is one of the finest in all of POEtry.
Check out my signature. That says it all.

[This is probably the last poem Poe wrote. In 1850, Frances S. Osgood identified Poe's wife, Virginia, as the real Annabel Lee, an attribution that has meet with much agreement. In contrast, T. O. Mabbott and other scholars have pointed out that although perhaps inspired, in part, by Virginia, Annabel Lee is a fictional character and need not truly represent any real person. Elmira Shelton, Poe's childhood sweetheart, considered herself as Annabel Lee, even though she outlived the author by many years.]
