The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

I got the idea of reading it from "Review A Book" thread and I liked the sound of the book and after reading Christie, I guess that I am really into mystery! :D

Something by Faulkner? The Sound and the Fury or As I Lay Dying? I have a hard time with him and it would be nice to read it with a few other people, I might get some insight that will make things a little clearer to me. ;)

We have already got 8 nominations! :eek2:

Here are the nominations so far:

Critique of Religion and Philosophy by Walter Kauffman

Wait until the Spring Bandini by John Fante

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

East of Eden by Steinbeck

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

As I Lay Dying by Faulkner

All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren

Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill

Idril> Because the BC read The Sound and the Fury in April, I have included As I Lay Dying. You can find the discussion thread here (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16592)

Pensive> I think you were refering to my review of The Name of the Rose. Even though it is a murder mystery on surface, it is very heavy on religion and philosophy, questioning many concepts. So it may not be exactly what you are looking for. :)

Last two nominations up for grabs! :D

If anyone would like to withdraw or change their nominations, please do so before the 25th.

Oh yeah I was refering to the same review. Is the plot too complicated? I am considering to change my mind because I did not even get a single thing in even "As I lay Dying" so I will prefer not to read complex stories but it will not hurt to try if I will find it anywhere....which I hardly think that I will...

The trouble with linchin? Poor quality rope?

I might tactically vote for East of Eden! Though the Fante is quite a quick read, and probably one Steinbeck fans would like.

If you just got done reading Faulkner, then people probably don't want to read him again so soon, you can take him off the list and let someone else suggest an author you haven't just read. I'll just have to content myself with following along with The Sound and The Fury thread. ;)

chmpman> Yes, please. And also the deadline for the 1500 words essay is May 30th! :D No, we are simply nominating a book to be read during the summer holidays. After 25th, we will have a poll to decide which one :)

We're also slated to read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy for the monthly book club. I think I may have to poke my eyes out at the prospect of reading 3 russian books in one years time.

Scheherazade
05-16-2006, 05:57 PM
Come now, come now!
You don't have be so bummed now!

Try to imagine this, Ms Papaya, please...

Through the summer holidays
We will be reading for days.
Tolstoy one month, Dickens another
No need to despair or dither!
Vote for Steinbeck for a change
He will add some colour to the range!

(Yes, yes... I rhyme terribly but had a Dr Seuss moment there and needed to get it out of my system! :D)

I would really like to be part of the book club, and I did look at it in April, but I could not conveniently find The Sound and The Fury. It would be easiest if we could read an old classic or something.

Charles Darnay
05-22-2006, 08:22 PM
I like the sound of Don Quixote.... Scher, if you want to withdraw mine nomination (Brothers Karamazov) for another (despite how enthusiastic the response to it was) that would be perfectly fine.

And if I had to choose between stoning and plank walking..... plank all the way!

RJbibliophil

I would like to nominate "Quiet Don" by Mikhail Sholokhov. It's really big (War and Peace big), but it's really amazing. Sholokhov got the Nobel prize mostly for this book. The time of action is the Civil War in Russia, and the main hero isn't sure on what side he shoud be- whire or red.
