Can wisp be used as a synonym for fairy or sprite? I think I have seen it used like that. It might just be wishful thinking, it would be a very good word.

I've never heard of it used that way. But it can be a shortened version of "Will o' the wisp", which is glowing marsh gas, also known as "Fairy lights", so stretching a point to use it as a synonym for fairy is definitely feasible. In the end, if it's your writing, you can use whatever words you like as long as you are aware that they may confuse the reader.
And you're right, it is a lovely, poetic word for a fairy.

Choices, choices...IŽll try with wips, and if it does not work, IŽll just go searching for new words. I do not like "fairy" it sounds to colourful, like something with pastel coloured wings.

pixie, sprite, fay, just a few alternatives to fairy I can think of.

wil-o-the-whisp is an ancient fairy name ... I've forgoteen what it means exactly or what the fairy of this spicies is supposed to look like. But if whoever the audience is knows stuff like that then I think you could get away with useing the word whisp.
