In life, each person bears a time
Of suffering violent, accumulate grime
From all the small things that so often go wrong –
The loss of a love, the end of a song.
A hell-during-life, when the solace of sleep
Is only excuse to continue to weep
And remembered pleasure pales to present pain
The cruel mores of life turning smiles insane.
And any small comfort, that all fades away
In the sadistic light of the unending day.
An hour, a day; a week, or a year
Arriving sans warning, defying dread’s fear.
So enter the piper, strike up a tune –
A minor, legato – all else will come soon.
Cries in the sunset, a brief flare of life
As darkness recedes at the rake of a knife.
Sharp talons are murder to unwary mouse
As the terrified rest squeak in underground house.
Then over snow, silent, sweep white-shadowed wings
The owl’s eyes explain all mortal things.
Why is it not sorrow? Why does he not cry
When all else beside him could wither and die?
It’s the end of the world – defined by the life
Failing as souls shrivel with weight of strife.
Sunlight in darkness, shadows at noon –
The end of one world, all else will come soon.
He picks up the poison, she picks up the rope –
What do you do when your heart just can’t cope?
The smiles surround you, you drown in their sea –
And can’t bear to wonder what future could be.
Don’t let them engulf you! Shrink from the abyss
Faraway lies still the life you could miss.
Death is release, and all else agony –
But the sum of all things is equal, and free.
Press weak hands to your soul, ask of it one last boon –
That peace somewhere lingers – all else will come soon.
Of suffering violent, accumulate grime
From all the small things that so often go wrong –
The loss of a love, the end of a song.
A hell-during-life, when the solace of sleep
