If you want to read about one individual's "journey" to become a writer and artist, there are few better than " A Portarit of the Artist as a Young Man" By: James Joyce.

In my opinion, Italo Calvino's "If on a winter's night" is an amazing inspirations to writers in a rut - and a fantastic book.

Maybe Walt Whitman's Song of Myself - that could loosen the blocks, maybe.

Read Lord of the Rings and Anne of Green Gables back-to-back. If that doesn't kickstart your imagination, nothing will.

It depends on which Muse it was that went on vacation. If you are thinking about writing a particular sort of literature, you might want to reply to.

PeterL's right; still, if you're looking for inspiration of the 'helpurself' variety, you might want to take a look at some of Natalie Goldberg's stuff. A few years back, someone gave me a book called The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron. It didn't particularly work for me, but it had plenty of strategies to get you writing and keep you writing. I really enjoyed a book by Eudora Welty called One Writer's Beginnings. It's short and sweet in the fullest sense.

You know almost every writer has written about their craft. That's why PeterL's idea hits the mark. Keep writing -- sometimes the 'muse' returns on one of those journal pages we've hastily filled late at night.

If you are planning on building ships or wagons, then you would become a wright, but if you want to write, then you will write. I don't know what language you are planning to write in, but, if it is English, then I suggest that you use the English language.

If you are planning to write horror, then I think that you should read H. P. Lovecraft, to see how it is done well. If you want to write fantasy and terror, then I would suggest that you read the greatest masters of each: Lord Dunsany and Lovecraft, respectively, or maybe Fritz Leiber.

For 'bohemian' inspiration, check out Coleman Dowell (known for his "psychology of the taboo"), Robert Creeley, and contemporary playwright Nell Leyshon.

And I just thought about Margaret Atwood.
