Orwell was a socialist who detested communism. He had a mind that could see through hype and spin so that where other leftie types were taken-in by Soviet propaganda (George Bernard Shaw etc) Orwell realised that Soviet communism was as bad if not worse than the Czarist autocracy it had replaced. He saw at first hand the evil influence of the Soviets in Spain and saw the pact with Hitler (which Stalin had made at the end of the thirties) for the treacherous and self-defeating manoeuvering that it was. He decided to use the fable form to satirise the Soviet system because such a form has a long history in making moral comments disguised as simple tales about animals. You can read the story as a simple enjoyable story about deceit and betrayal but when you grasp that it is a political story too then you get more out of it. Then you can start looking for the real figures and events that Orwell has put into the fable in a slightly disguised form.
