the FIFA world cup poll inspired me to post a new sports related thread. i hope this hasn't been done yet.
so, what's your fave sport? you can vote for more than one. please tell us if you like watching this sport on the telly or play it yourself (or both).
things like "turning the pages of a book" or "extreme pint glass lifting" don't really count as sport but if you can't help it you can vote "other"
my faves are swimming (which I theoretically do every week), walking/hiking and cycling. i don't watch any sports except football (soccer) world cup or Euro cup

edit:
a pic of a Bavarian double-pint lifting contest

I love to watch Cricket, Football and Hocky matches but I love playing Badminton!

I love cycling but I can't. (This is one of the things that I regret about living in Pakistan)

how come you can post in the thread while I'm still putting the poll up?
sorry i crammed so many different sports into some options i just tried to include as many as possible... in case you were wondering: Basketball, Baseball and Icehockey are together because they are typically American...

I was studying "Phisical education" and I was fond of playing Basketball, Tennis, Soccer ... but now I don't have an enough time to play them all, I just keep on watching them on TV, or internet media :) I'm very good at Basketball, I got an A grade in it, although there were many guys playing better, but I'm distinguished .. haha

Nice idea, and I like it .. Thanks.

"Basketball/ Baseball/ Icehockey" "Typically American" they may be - though some would argue hockey is Canadian, and at least two of those sports are played with gusto by many more nations than just the US - but honestly I can't think of three team sports that are LESS similar... Where's the "Bridge/Javelin/Kickboxing" category?

But OK, no matter. I never watch basketball, baseball bores me to tears, hockey is the greatest sport ever... so count me in for a third of an X for this.

Cricket intrigues me, but I enjoy watching fencing in the Olympics the most.

I love watching baseball, football (american), basketball in person but I don't watch it on TV.

I'm not a big fan of hockey, probably because back home they're all crazy over hockey and during the season that's all that is discussed.

hehe :) yep you've got a point.. but there was a limit of ten poll options so i had to group them somehow....
also, i realize i forgot martial arts and track-and-field ...is there any way i can have more poll options?
Pensive, it's interesting how these things are culture-dependent. over here, everybody (and I mean it) is taught how to swim and ride a bike at a very early age... if you can't do it, people will think you're a bit of a weirdo...
it's not like anybody [I]needs[/B] to know how to swim or cycle for their survival or everyday business over here, but somehow everybody is excpected to learn it.... *weird*

I can't stand some of those sports (yuk) ... but you don't get to knw which ones because if your like my family your really pasionate about them.
I love to watch and play soccer. But (other than dancing) my favorite phisical activity is reall really long walks.

Horseback riding (to do)! Never played polo, not even watched it actually. I'd vote icehockey (to watch) if it wasn't grouped with basketball (even though it's quite ok to play it :p) and baseball (I'd like to play it though) :p

I'm totally obsessed with football(soccer). I like both to play and to watch the games in some bar with my friends. I occasionally play basketball and enjoy watching NBA games. I like hockey a bit less, but after all I'm from Russia.
I enjoy playing tennis and table tennis.
I don't really like baseball but I'll watch something like Red Sox-Yankees game

I absolutely love to watch American Football. When I saw it for the first time, I couldn't believe people clashing and throwing themselves on one another for the sake of an over-sized almond could possibly be called a sport. However, when someone told me that there are actually rules behind it (and not few...), I couldn't help becoming intrigued, though I still haven't figured out all the moves and tactics yet. :D

Getting physically involved in sports, I so much adore water sports - all kinds of them, but my absolute favourite is surfing. I can't wait to try wake-boarding for the first time this summer

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I am somewhat of a type A sports fan I will watch any sport.....in fact if sport wasnt on TV I'd get rid of the thing. This year my sport viewing budget has allowed me to get Blue Jays Season Tix as well.

As far as playing goes: I played Rugby (scrum half) from about 5 yrs old till I turned 19, then I moved out here and have yet to get joined up with a proper club - still the occassional kick about with the friends tho'. I play football (soccer) whenever I get a chance & played for the college team (centre midfield). I boxed for about a year, however I did not have the footwork and gave it up (it was a great way to stay in shape however. I play ice-hockey/ roller hockey on occassion as well. I would like to try american football (I think I would make a half decent Strong Safety).

** Forgot to mention I also coach football (soccer) in the summer & I have qualifications (Scotvec Modules) in Basketball, and Trampolining.

I think it's hysterical that so many hockey games manufactured in the past and present are built, as a matter of course, with a fighting game engine within them.

football, football, football. Is there a finer game? I don't think so. The pies, the beers, the songs. its magic.

When I was a teen, I played many sports: softball (hard ball baseball on a rare occaision), two hand touch football, basketball, tennis, weight lifting, and other NY street ball games like stick ball and punch ball. Now all I do is jog and calisthetics and light weights. Swimming, I like too but a pool is not readily available.

As to watching, I love baseball and enjoy American football as well. I consciously limit it to two sports. I have friends that watch (and they are basically couch patatos) all the sports, and there's a lot when you consider professional and college. Their whole lives revolve around sports on TV. Kind of pathetic if you ask me. I do like some of the Olympics, and I do watch the World Cup soccer. I've got too many Italian uncles who are passionate about it, and it's rubbed off a little on me.

Okay, so I just checked other because I'm not really into sports, but I have played softball and badminton, enjoy cycling, both bi and uni(not very good), dislike swimming because I'm not that good, enjoy canoes and kayaks, love hiking, orienteering(haven't done much), mountain hiking, love figure skating and skiing, both downhill and cross country. Not to say that I'm particularly good at any of the above, but that's not important. I enjoy watching the olympics, especially gymnastics, figure skating, ice dancing, skiing, snowboarding, skijumping, etc... I think that major league sports are a waste, but that's just my opinion.

(Lacrosse takes some real skill! The Indians knew how to test themselves.)

I love watching Boxing. But mostly amateur or olympic fights. Professional boxing seems boring to me now. So much of money, media, commercials......seems like it's a show not a fight.
I also sometimes watch women's tennis. Although I don't even like tennis, so I don't really know why I'm watching it.

Sports?

These days it is limited to going for a spin in the woods on my trusty MTB, which I also use to get myself to work.

In previous years, I have been very active in a number of ways:

Flying (soaring)
Weightlifting
All manners of dancing.

I have never watched much though. The exception is F1 racing.

I've recently gotten into the Poker tournaments they show on TV all the time. It's not really a sport, but it's always on ESPN.It's pretty interesting to me,and it's made me become addicted to internet gambling.

Ry - For your own good, I wouldn't gamble if I were you. The house never loses in the long run. Remember that. If you like poker, then why not play for nickles and dimes with your friends? Just some advice. Take it for what it's worth.

well I must say I am now stoked to find a bridge/javelin/kickboxing category woohoo!
The only time I absolutely love hockey is when Canada has played Sweden(those are smokin' games) or Russia. you can hardly breathe, the tension in the air is so heavy.
Come on beer I'll have you a game of javelin bridge or kickboxing javelin, I am not too big on bridge unless I have to cross one.

See, it's a good thing it was fake money. I like watching the poker tournaments on TV too. I'm not a big fan of the Texas Holdem game. I miss playing with my friends for nickels and dimes on a saturday night with cold beer in the frig. It seems like we only play once or twice a year now.

I was a basketball man well up into my thirties, playing in games with players half my age (affectionly known as The Old Man). I was also known as "Capt. Hook" for a hook shot that was almost impossible to block and went in a good 90% of the time. I'd never make it up and down the court now. I'd make a better goalie for a hockey team, already have built-in padding! Hee!   My favorite to watch is billards for some reason, probably because I'm so lousy at it! :D

I am not one for watching sports, either live or on TV. I did watch the last 20 minutes of the final Boston Redsox/NY Yankees World Series game a few years ago. (Redsox Nation! :p )

In the nice weather I like to swim and walk. Does typing on my keyboard count as a sport?

I watched the whole series, although I'm not a big baseball fan. But I was a Boston University student and our campus is really close to Fenway stadium. There were some crazy celebrations on Kenmore square aftre the victory. Now I'm in NY among the supporters of eveil Yankees

Me too!

When I was seven or eight, me and my brother used to take grandpa's walking sticks which were shaped like hockey sticks and we used to play with them. It was really fun. I miss those days!
