Okay, on a whim I bought the special edition 25 aniversery of The Day the Earth stood Still. Its in black and white, and I remeber watching it when I was pretty young...I rembered mainly the ol 8 foot tall robot of death...Gort.

So I put in the dvd player yesterday and was watching it...it really is an amazingly profound movie (In a really blunt way). Spoiler: Klaatu's mission is to tell the people of earth to stop fighting, and the military gun him down...twice.

I would recommend this movie, it's message holds up in todays society, just as strongly as it did in '51.

What are your thoughts?

I saw it when I was a kid in the 50's. It showed on TV and it was the talk of the elementary school the next day. So many kids were frightened by it. It was so realistic then. I don't think we understood the message. We were just expecting to see a spaceship like that in the sky at any moment.

It is a timeless classic - there should be a "Loved it!" button above - Klaatu barada nikto. Possibly the first successful sci-fi film where the aliens weren't trying to invade or destroy us.

And Patricia Neal was one of the top screamers in the business.

I love this movie, too! :D It's one of my father's fondest childhood memories. We watched it together on TV when I was little, so it's also one of mine, I guess. I've always preferred peaceful aliens to the violent invader variety.

What are your thoughts?Ah, yes... I remember seeing it when I was rather young, long before we had our first colour TV set. I have to admit that I didn't quite "get it" then, but I thought it was a good film.

Then, a couple of years ago, I happened to watch it again. This time I got the message. I also found the film itself somewhat aged, but still worth watching.

Sometimes large groups of people display a marked similarity to a heard of cattle: If one stampedes, they all stampede... We really should not be so suspicious of anything dissimilar to ourselves.
