Wish I had the story with me. From what I remember Goodman Brown is married to Faith (symbolic). He is a good, God-fearing husband and citizen of the town. He has an appointment with the devil for some unknown reason and he keeps the appointment, but doesn't intend for it to go as far as it does. He thinks he can resist the devil, but ends up going to a midnight satanic meeting. On the way the devil enlightens him by telling him his ancestors were good friends of his. The devil also tells him many of the townspeople whom Brown admired for their godliness are also in league with him. Brown sees and hears some of them on their way to the service, including his church minister. This disturbs him greatly. He's about to turn back when he hears his new wife Faith flying overhead on her way to the meeting. As proof that it is indeed her, some ribbon or handkerchief of hers floats down. He decides "to the devil with it" and goes on to the meeting, guided by the staff the devil gave him. At the meeting he sees most of the townspeople, supposedly God-fearing. He finds out that two people are to be inducted into Satan's service, then he finds out it is himself and Faith. They are irresistibly drawn forward for the ritual dedication. At the last minute he tells Faith to resist. Suddenly he finds himself alone on the forest floor. He returns to the town as the next day begins and doesn't know whether the happenings of the night before were a dream or reality. He chooses the notion that it was reality and spends the rest of his life a suspicious and unhappy person, even suspecting his wife. I've often thought about this story. It could be taken a few ways. One way is that Satan will try to disillusion people and deceive them. Another way is that people aren't what they seem. I seem to lean toward the second way of looking at it. Many times in my life I have been disappointed and disillusioned by people I put on a pedestal. Maybe Hawthorne experienced the same thing and wrote this story about it. Just some quick thoughts.
