View Full Version : Guess where Koa is going this time
Hm well this is the first of my forums where I get to announce it and I was going to keep it for when I have a precise date but since I've happened to 'have to' hint at it a couple of times, well... I might as well start preparing you for my departure LOL
I could make a thread like the Guess Robin's Age thing, but I guess I won't...I actually did mention it in a thread so if you want to try and guess don't read on
*** time for your guess****
I'm going to be in Kiev, Ukraine. For 3 months. I'll work at the Institute of Italian Culture there. It's an internship of the Ministery of Foreign Affairs to which I applied through University. I was really hoping to get a place, even though my first choice was Russia... but that's ok as it is, just going is a miracle (it's a very competitive thing on a national basis and it's also rumoured not to have very clear criterias...). I should be leaving in about one month, still waiting to get in touch with my tutor
It's weird cos sometimes I start to feel that I'm slowly getting some roots here. Better run away before it's too late! ;) But I'm also feeling that the life I'm leading now is not exactly rewarding, and right in the days when I had that news, I was starting to feel that I feel like going away again. It's my drug, I can't stay more than 2 months here and feel totally "full" at the same time - I need to get away.
3 monhts is a weird time. Not short, but not too long either... I wonder if I'll settle down feeling it'll be long, or if I'll just always feel it as so temporary...

Good luck, Koa. If you have access to a computer and the internet, drop us a line to let us know how it's going. What will you be doing there?
BTW, if you had played that game, I would have guessed England.

Noooo I love PURPLE, I want PURPLE!!!
Well you're right, bright pink would be easy to find... but I don't like to be noticed... I guess I'm doomed to nervously wait for my luggage to arrive (it is always the last one, of course ). I am so scared that they'll lose my luggage, it scares me as much as the flight itself!
Btw, tutor as there will be someone at the actual places who will tell me when I have to start exactly and what to do with documents and all - I'm a trainee, Uni is sending me there after all (on Uni's grant as internships are unpaid, I might add)
Virgil, ahah no England is hopefully next. :D I don't think such a place is guessable anyway ;) What I'll do exactly, well... I might be unlucky and spend my days making photocopies and cleaning the floor ;)... Or have actually something cool like taking care of the library or help organising cultural events... or maybe even help teaching Italian, though that wouldn't be too great... for the students, I mean :D If I had got to got to St Petersburg as I wanted, the job would have invloved some translation from Russian... I don't know if I'll get to do somehting like that in Kiev as well, but whatever, it's going to be a great experience (and wow 3 months...the longest job of my life so far LOL )! I hope I'll improve my Russian, I'm a bit worried cos of course it's not exactly the same Russian as in Russia, different accent and they have also Ukrainian there... but it can't do any harm

I'm sure you'll do fine. And without doubt it will be a great experience for you.

Congrats, Koa! Though I understand that St. Petersburg is way cooler(it's my native city), Kiev is also very beautiful. Btw, I recommend you read Bulgakov's "White guard". It's about a family living in Kiev during the Russian Civil War. Should be interesting, especially considering the fact that you'll be in Kiev soon.

Have fun Koa. I have no idea what Kiev is like but I'm sure that it won't be what you expect. That's always one of the best things about going anywhere new; the surprises. Tell us all about your impressions.

The only thing about Kiev I know is Dynamo. That shows my knowledge of the world, all soccer, no culture :p
Have fun, and do give us the occassional update, show us what kiev is all about.

Oh wow, Congratulations Koa!!! Three months is a nice amount of time. That's how long I stayed in Italy, and it felt longer than I thought it would (in a good way) but still too short. Certainly long enough to begin to feel "at home." Gee we'll all look forward to hearing about your travels. Hope you can drop us a line now and again while you're there.
Yeah I'll definitely try to be online, though I guess I won't have much time for forums... but I can take a quick look every now and then. I'd die without the internet at all, it's just so useful to keep in touch with family and friends, and to check the news. I feel out of the world if I don't do that for a while.

I'll give it a try then, but my previous experiences with Bulgakov were far from satisfying... ;)
So you're from Piter? How cool! I've never been there! I love Moscow though...

There is a rivalry between moscow and St. Petersburg. I always enjoy arguing with my cousin (she is from Moscow) which one is better. Now we are both in NY :)
"White guard" and "Master and Margarita" are very different, so even if you didn't enjoy the latter, there is a good possibility you'll like "White Guard"

Wow! Congratulations, Koa!
That's going to be so awesome. And it sounds like a beautiful time of year to go; I'm guessing the summer weather is mild there. I can't wait to hear all about it.

  :eek:Why? I've been once in the Italian institute in Kiev and met sig. Balloni, the director. A nice guy. I don't think he remembers me - I was in a group of people. There is a nice library there, I wish I could go to Kiev more often and have a closer look at it. :)
Ehehe sorry for a second I thought you were someone I know....
Yeah I was given the contact of sig. Balloni but so far I've spoken only with other collaborators... some of which weren't extremely nice but nevermind...
Oh so which city are you from? And do you study Italian?
