If you are an avid reader, you will be able to handle it. There's not too much complicated about the book, but you have to be able to appreciate Steinbeck's style in order to enjoy it, or else you will just be bored.
I read Grapes of Wrath (another of his works) when I was 14 - I couldn't really get past the first few chapters because I didn't really find his style all that great. I read it again this year (as well as East of Eden) and I enjoyed them both greatly. But it all depends on who you are.

You'll probably be alright then. It's not difficult at all.Having a basic biblical knowledge would do some good though. As it is kind of a parable of the story of Cain and Abel.

He's absolutely right. You'll either love it or hate it.
I used to get into arguments with my librarian over Steinbeck because I told her he was the finest American writer, and she'd say I was stupid becuase I couldn't understand Faulkner. We still argue over this once a month.
