Hey everyone, so I'm sitting here practicing my violin, and I got curious what instruments everyone has and plays. I play the Violin/Fiddle (depending on what mood I'm in), the mandolin, and piano.

I think it's really amazing to find people like my dad who can pick up any instrument and play it. We have a bass, two fiddles, two banjos, an acoustic guitar, two electric bass guitars, a mandolin, an auto harp, a mountain dulcimer, a hammer dulcimer, a trumpet, a piano, and a tin whistle. My dad can play all of them minus the electric guitars and trumpet which are my brothers.

So everyone have fun and spread the music. <><

I play the flute, the one that is played sideways (I don't know the English word for it :)), furthermore the piano and the guitar.
In middle-school, I really wished to attend a music school to become a professional orchestra player, but that was much too expensive and now my ambition has dwindled to a more modest level :D

I'm taking up the Saxophone after my summer exams, something to look forward to... other than that, i play a rather patchy range of things, school recorder, and anything that's in an Indonesian Gamelan orchestra. (The Gong!)

I play guitar competently; enough to wing it in most bands (unless they decide to cover Yes or some such). I also teach beginners guitar in evening class. I dabble with mandolin, keyboards, harmonica and penny whistle but wouldn't claim to actually play any of those (didn't stop me being synth player in a goth band in the 80's though). I write songs on occasion and have performed a few live, both with unaccompanied guitar and with a 3 piece band - it would be better if I could sing though!

I've been sucking at guitar for years, and today I'm proud to say I can make a lot of noise on it and at least sound like I don't suck most of the time. I've therefore moved on to sucking at drums and piano, too. It's a lot of fun, though maybe not for my bandmates. I also suck at harmonica, and would love to suck at violin some day. :D

I think that's a flute... lol... the one that doesn't play side-ways is a recorder I believe... I'm not sure... bleh... anyhow, I play recorder (used to, learned in third grade, but I rarely forget what I learn), and a little bit of piano.

I have grade 1 in piano. I failed grade 2 when I was 12, and gave up. But I can still play two songs!

Aye, thanks for clarifying! ;)

As there is such a huge variety of flutes or flute-like instruments on market and it took me ages to correctly distinguish between piccolo-flute, recorder, bass recorder, and the other recorders including a note-letter in their name :) It seemed to me that only the flute stands out rather clearly, so I chose to opt for that one! :D

I have been attempting to learn to play the bass guitar for 4 years now. I can play House Of The Rising Sun on the piano, Reveille & Retreat on the Bugle & I can get a decent tune out of a beer bottle.

Oh yea, my grandpa is also getting pretty good at playing the whiskey jug. (There's nothing in it, it's just for playing bluegrass). I think my brother can play the jaw harp also. Fun stuff. <><

Well, coming from a Penecostal Church background, we really believed in music in the church. By 12 I was playing a borrowed flattop guitar. Years, later, when I had my own insturments, I moved on to drums and some keyboard. I took up lead guitar. I then hurt my left index finger badly at my job so that holding down guitar stings became painful. So I took up bass guitar, because you hold with the flat of the finger/ When my hand healed, I learned 12 string and mandolin, but bass is still my favorite. And, yes, I learned bass like most people on Deep Purple's "Smoke On the Water." :D

We play flute and we can do it quite well. We are also quite good with recorder. Also we can play acoustic guitar a bit.
Simple instruments like jauram, jaw harp and other such things are nice too.

I play the clarinet. I played the violin in the third grade and switched to the clarinet to the fourth and stuck with it until the sixth grade when I bought my first clarinet (before, we rented them from the school every year). It would be the first time that they would implement the fee for in-school lessons (before we would just skip music class and take Orchestra or Band instead). I still play from time to time (I stole some of the music from sixth grade, :) and I have two books full of songs). I would love to go back to the violin some day when I have the time. But my first musical love will always be singing. I think it's just so liberating, especially when I feel a really intense emotion, just to belt it out.

Nothing at all...
well, until I was reminded of the air guitar... ;)

At school we had to play the (cheap plastic-made) flute... i always sucked at music though.

I ring the doorbell when I go at people's place though...does that count? :D
(really stupid joke and it sounds better in Italian cos there's actually a real pun there...;))

I think I could remember how to play the recorder (it has been 10? years since I last played it :p ), I'm rather scary (read learned bits myself) with accoustic guitar and quite noisy with drums (back when I had access to any :bawling: ). I'd like to play the piano and/or the keyboard. I suppose the keyboard will be it (once I get my hands on any that is :p ) as I have no idea where I would fit a piano :D

Great!!! We don't "play" the stereo but we "play" the doorbell as we "play" the guitar or the piano etc... so LOL.

If I had to choose, I'd also would like to play the keyboards... well I'm too much of a lover of 80s/synth music which relies on keyboards a lot... Piano would be cool too, and it sounds so much easier than guitar. Anyway I'm definitely not gifted for music and I have no patience so I don't think I'll ever try...

A funny personal story. When I was, oh probably around ten years old, my mother wanted me to learn an instrument. I chose the Saxophone, and she took me to a tutor. After one lesson of wheezing into the instrument, the teacher took my mother aside and told her to save her money. I would never amount to much, musically. Unfortunately I overheard and held a grudge to that fat S-O-B, but he was right, and he probably saved my mother money.

I can play the harmonica, but nobody thinks I can because they don't appreciate my utilization of non-harmonic notes to create a balance of irony in a wide range of key.

In other words, I delude myself.

Jealous of everyone who can play an instrument, particularly the piano. I was not graced with any musical prowess whatsoever. :P My voice breaks glass, but only because people are jumping out the windows.

I play both the viola and the violin, though I prefer the viola. I think its lower pitch has a subtle beauty that the violin can not match. I also am able to play the banjo poorly, but I don't enjoy playing it very much.

Haha, say hello to a kindred spirit, Higley.

Working on the harmonica and guitar in my spare time, I particularly love the piano.

The organ, king of all instruments. Nothing quite like a four manual, real-pipes properly disbursed throughout the church or building, a hundred stops and full pedal arrangement. That will keep you busy. quasimodo1

I don't care! I just thought it was funny that she thought the sax was a manly instrument when more boys play the guitar and drums then girls and I'm learning one and already play the other...all rock n' roll for me baby!!! Haha!

People tend to associate the sax with seduction. I don't if that's true anymore.

I got a trumpet two months ago and I'm still trying to strengthen my lips.

Why would your mother want to keep you away from such nice insturments?!

I thought I posted here or in a similar thread...I play the keyboard. I like the piano, too, but my hands are too small to play as fast as I like, so the keyboard is better for me. Plus I can make funy noises on the keyboard. I'd LOVE to own an electric organ someday. :D

I played percussion in highschool, so that included drums, timpanis, three different xylophones, and a whole bunch of other minor instruments (yes, there is actaully a technique to playing the triangle). I also played french horn as my secondary. I haven't played since I graduated though, nad I really miss them. People always take me for a flute player though..not sure why.
