I think that he was somewhat of a nutter to be honest, at least from the things i heard of the guy.
Means he probably wrote some good books, at least hollywood seems to like it. Plenty of movies made. One upcoming too, The Rum Diary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376136/) starring Johnny Depp (again, he also starred in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120669/))
I think he's a truly great writer, though I'm not sure I can substantiate this in any way without the books in front of me. I first read him in my teens because of the wildman reputation and the Ralph Steadman illustrations; but whenever I come back to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in particular I'm always surprised at just how incredibly good and unique the writing is.

Well he was particularly nutty enough to take a shotgun to his own head. So...
Anyway I really like his writing style. It shows great bitterness, but his sense of humor is great. If you're interested in politics at all, or if you come to like FALILV, you might want to try Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72. His characterizations of politicians such as Nixon and Humphrey are amazing, and his dislike for Nixon came to fruit just a few years later.

At one time Hunter S. Thompson was considered "The" writer of a generation. I think his life was tragic but his talent was great. One needs to understand the time he was writing in and how innovative his writing was and still is.
He was the reason a lot of young writers got into the field and into reporting.

Dr Thompson was a very good writer who sometimes wrote about things that interested me. He was a journalist, not a writer of fiction. If readers keep that in mind, his writing seems better. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is an almost fictionalized account of covering a convention for a magazine article. The writing is very good; the descriptions are outrageous, as are the characters. Hells Angels and Fear and loathing on the campaign Trail '72 are also quite good. I read a few other things by him, but they weren't as memorable.

It had to be cool to be a political writer on the campaign trail filing reports for
ROLLING STONE. He shookup the main stream media and scared Nixon.

I love his drug fueled writing style. I've read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "Hell's Angels" and "The Rum Diary" which are all brilliant. Check out some of the articles he wrote, those I've read, such as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 2004, are just as hilarious as his novels.
