Adaptions of Othello

I was looking to watch an adaption of Shakespeare's Othello. Can anyone give me any ideas of which ones to watch and which ones to avoid. Thanks!

Yes, that is a great movie version of Othello. Fishbourne was excellent as Othello and so was Kenneth Branagh as Iago. I loved it.

Ohh, don't get me started on Branagh - he was a terrible Iago! Iago in the play was twisted, maniacal and purely Machiavellian (love that word). Branagah played him as a bit of a tosser. I think the reason Branagh played such a good Prof. Lockhart in the second Harry Potter film was because he didn't have to act...just be himself. >.<

I agree with you that Branagh wasn't in the film what most people's picture of Iago is in the play (Gilbert Godfrey is the ONE true Iago!), but the film was still quite enjoyable.

However, what I do disagree with is calling Iago Machiavellian. I think he goes against quite of few of Machiavelli's principles. Machiavelli warns us that "any prince who has relied on his words and made no other prearations will come to grief" - this is what happens to Iago.

Machiavelli says that the prince must be the lion and the fox - Iago is simply the fox. He is too cowardly and "honest" to play the lion - God forbid he should have bloo on his hands.

lol smooth return Aurelian! although it sounds lik your suffering from a slight case of self abnegation.. *wink wink* Branagh is a weenie head, and i really didnt enjoy the movie purely because he killed the role of Hamlet, and then he goes on to killing the role of Iago... grrr *shakes fist*

Phht. Self abnegation, my *expletive* And I found out that I was kinda correct in using the word Machiavellian...not necessarilly referring to The Prince by Machiavelli, but the machiavel...the stock 'evil' character often found in works by Shakespeare and oter works of around that time. (incidentally, we have Commedia D'ellarte to thank for stock characters. GO DRAMA STUDIES!!)

How are you guys going with the context essay? Context sucks >.<

its ok Aurelian, we'll get through this, just say it with me now 'I'm in Self Abnegation'... lol yeah the context essay is ummm getting there (not sure where there is but its getting there!!)... personally i liked the part where i was mentioned in the notes! now that made my day!
i think i shall make a plan tomoro... that might be a good apithany (lol so used that in the wrong context, but it sounded funny in my head so i decided to say it! try that sometime)
