Money creates illusion and reality creates money.

I only saw the film. To me, it showed a man adopting an illusion created by that society - in order to bag the girl. The ends he went to and indeed needed to go to in that circle, showed his courage. Despite he may have been a cad by any other semblence, he was GREAT by other standards.

I don't think, as Redford played it, Gatsby really succumbed to that illusion. I think he was greater than the illusion, and actually beat the society dods at their own game. I have to see the film again, thanks for reminding me.

I would like your help on the theme ILLUSION Vs REALITY in the Great Gatsby,a novel written by Fitzgerald. You might like to look into characters... So called 'upper class' people. Are they what seem to be? Gatsby has an image of Daisy... Does she actually fit into that image? Does Gatsby himself fit into the image of him created by other people and even himself? Is the American dream what it seems to be?

I think the book is rich with illusions. If you share some of your opinions with us, we can have a better discussion :)
