Every year there is a gigantic booksale in all swedish bookstores at the same time. They sell out old prints, and odd books as well as book printed for the event. It has already been going on for about two weeks. Usually you get catalogues in advance, and the night when it all starts the shops are open almost all night. It is like christmas, but almost better.

This year I got myself a collection of classical swedish poetry from ballads to Karlfeldt, Der Steppenwolf by Hesse and a book on gardening. I might go out for another shopping spree, but I suspect I need more bookshelfs (or at least that is what someone here is telling me)

Is there anything like this in other countries?

Not in England, but we like your Ikea bookshelves a lot! :D

I make a pilgrimage about once every couple of years to Hay-on-Wye, it's a small village, just over the border into Wales that is absolutely full to bursting with second-hand bookshops. I normally come back with the boot of the car and the back seat full.

Somehow there are always more books than bookshelfs. Some kind law, I think. I have a theory. I suspect my books are making small books when I sleep. I have tried to put them together in couples to see what will happen. Capote and Wilde does not seem to be getting along very well, but I suspect Judith Krantz and Shakespeare might have something going on. And I am eagerly waiting for the love child of Steinbeck and Salinger. Hey, it might work.

I can see it now, "Of Mice and Zooey", "I'll take Macbeth" - could work indeed! :D

Add yet another reason for me to go up there.

No, there's nothing like it here, not even remotely. :bawling:

In the Netherlands we have the book fair in Deventer. it is a large fair, with just books. All kinds of books. About 6 kilometers of bookstands, all throughout the city centre and along the river. It's always on the first sunday in august.

In edmonton, evey year or so the public library has a sale of old books, and unpopular books, I usually find some cool stuff there, like: 3 years ago I found a book on "future Robitics" and "Submarine Technology".

They were pretty cool, but you have to get there pretty early to find anything really good.
