I am reading 1984 for my English class. I was given an assignment asking to analyze what is being satirized with Big Brother, The Party, War, Winston, and Newspaeak, each individually. So far, I only have ideas for the Party which I think Orwell uses to represent the major totalitarian political powers of his time; but I have no clue what the others are satire of. Any ideas??

in my opinion, newspeak satirises the russian revolution and nazi germany. Though they did not have thought crime speaking against the institution held serious repercussions.obviously Orwell exaggerates this he was prob showing that they were moving in this direction. Newspeak saterizes censorship in a dictatorship.

Smith is the most common British name, whilst Winston obviously had resonance for many post war readers - and perhaps the incongruity of the 'common' name with the 'upper class' Winston, helps to give an air of the future. If that sounds a bit vague, it is because I have had a few glasses of wine! Haven't you discussed any of this in class?? I'm always really surprised when people come on saying, "I have no idea!" What do you do in class?! Oh - and read it again - ACTIVELY! By the way - I am not meaning to sound harsh - really hard to get nuance across on these forums!
