There is a very fanous movie that is a relatively contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" called "West Side Story." Yes,the Montagues and Capulets were "gangbangers." You should find watching the movie both entertaining and enlightening.

Consider what themes the play addresses. List them. And then see how many of them apply to today's society. I think you will find that most do. Find modern examples that display these relevancies and pair them with examples from the play and you are well on your way to an extremely thorough essay. It wouldn't be fair of me to give specific examples but I hope this helps provide a possible direction for research.
