Help me find a story!

Rough plot: (and he thinks it's French literature, 1800s) main character has anti-Catholic sentiments. In a carriage accident, he says "Mon Dieu!" and then after surviving, worries that, on his deathbed, he may have the same "conversion" so he writes a letter (to be opened after his death) saying that no matter what religious sentiments he expresses on his deathbed, it should not be considered a recantation of his anti Catholic beliefs. He does say religious things when dying, and the letter is read by family afterward and they throw it in the fireplace.
Any ideas ???

Some questions..
Why does he resent christianity so much?
Are his family christians?
Is the guy atheist?

And also..Why is saying My God! mean something as extreme as conversion to him? It could have just been a slip of the tongue. Or did he really break down and pray to god?

It sounds like it might be Guy de Maupassant. He wrote a lot of short stories and I've read about half of them. This sounds vaguely familiar. You might want to try looking there.
