You know, those ads at the top of the site's pages?
They seem to be predominantly "OMG!!11!ESSAYDUENOW?" and "TOOBUSYTOWRITE???" and "CUSTOMTERMPAPERS. Creative Custom Term Papers free of plagiarism. Prompt Delivery" etc..
When I click on the "Reasons to believe in Christianity" (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15790&page=2&pp=15) topic, one of the ads is "Believe in God? We'll pay you $75 right now to complete a simple survey"..
anyone clicked on that one?
anyone done the survey?
was it worth it?
did you get your money?
I'm too scared to click it, I'm afraid I'll be attacked by religious pop-ups
Any other funny/helpful banner ads you've seen?

I've mentioned a few, my favorite being "Don't Read". If it's not a big giant in-your face kind of add I rarely notice it.

I'm always intrigued by the one advertising the novel "A Dancing Bear" with the words "Maybe the work of a dead man". This is a sign of quality now?
- Why should I read this book?
- The author is... get this... dead!

When I clicked on General Chat, I found a very odd add on the top and it was:
"Is Your Love Cheating? Use this software to record everything that happens on your PC"
OMG, It was really weird.

I find the Sky adverts very annoying on entering the site - in fact sometimes they just go on and on until I give up and do something else. Had it been as bad when I first looked on the site, I would not have bothered. (Of course, that may have been what it was there for, in which case it failed - tee hee)
I've not read "A Dancing Bear" but don't confuse it with "The Dancing Bear" by Peter Dickinson - an excellent book. Peter Dickinson still lives, as far as I know, about fifteen miles from me, not that I've ever met him.

I never noticed there being ads on this site untill now. But now that I know, I'll never be able to ignore them again. Yay, free documentaries online? But that God thing is just scary. 'God Loves You', 'Who is Nimrod', 'Conversion to Judaism' and 'God is not a Sadist'. I find this all very intruiging, but somehow unsetlling. Like they are trying to indoctrinate me.

Ha Ha - it is just another "give me some money now, and when the blue moon shines you'll maybe get something back.
Nothing sinister, they just want $35 from you, that's all.

No, I'm afwaid to click! so it only costs $35 to get $75! cool!
Nightshade, they're not "pop-ups", they're text ads that appear at the top of the site pages. By way of whatever special secwet internet ways they cater to key words detected on whichever page you happen to be viewing at the time.[/theUNgeekspeaking
So viewing pages in the Religious Texts area, they're predominantly of a religious bent.
You don's see them? :confused

I rarely see popups these days. The same goes for those obnoxious bandwith thieving ads. Why? Because I ditched Mickeysofts bloated Internet exploder a long time ago...
My choice browser is Mozilla Firefox armed with adblock. It's free, very configurable, less vulnerable and performs better than IE. Opera is another very good alternative. I recommend both (NB: I am in no way associated with either product - I'm just using them).

I should try Mozilla. I had Netscape but it wouldn't work for a lot of things. So now i'm using Opera, it's been pretty good. It's just hard to find a good browser that is tabbed and doesn't suck up all my bandwidth and slow me down when I play games. I liked Netscape because it worked really good and had tabs but it really sucked for applet and IE bassed web pages.

NEVER CLICK THOSE THINGS. just don't do it. Even on my emails I never click anything. scams abound and you could find yourself in real trouble from the seemingly most innocent things. They count on your curiousity.
well that is how I feel about it anyway.
hey Logos how your doin?

Netscape is incompatible with many many many sites, although I love and use their Mail function. In that case, I suggest Firefox in combination with Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/thunderbird/) (also by Mozilla) It works very much to my satisfaction, and is just as configurable as Firefox. In addition to that its security outclasses Outlook.
They count on your curiousity.
Too right. It's like putting up a sign saying WET PAINT. The next thing you know, someone has to find out if it's true...

This is highly disturbing. I was just reading a post by esteemed Rubber-Duckese speaker RobinHood3000 when I looked up at the banner ads and saw... this.
I Rub my Duckie $15
I Rub my Duckie massager just $15 + Free Shipping over $39

Blocking ads is not a good thing, it is like shoplifting, This site is fully ad supported you know. That ram upgrade a few weeks ago so that it runs faster cost me $700. It is possible to detect people who are blocking ads, and I might one day be force to block suck people from viewing this site.
Plus the text ads here take less bandwidth than a single post, so there is no bandwidth excuse. Not to mention that bandwidth nowadays is cheap.
Only click on the ads if they interest you, but do not fear anything nefarious from Google ads. Google heavily polices the companies that advertise for them and you should never fear anything odd installed on your PC or anything from clicking a Google ad.
Its really a shame that some shady companies have soured so many consumers on Internet ads, by and large they are safe, effective, an unobtrusive.
I can understand popup blockers, truthfully I run one too, but something that blocks simple text banner ads isn't right.
And yes, Google's content match targetting sometimes produces funny results.

I didn't realise there was software to block text/banner ads?
Edited to add: I started this topic to poke fun at the ads and their wording. It costs a lot of money, time and resources to maintain a site like this, I hope everyone can appreciate that :)

I love them they are pretty funny, I had addsense on me blog to cover a feature, and when I paid it off I removed it, but some of the ads are so damn funny, I had one for hemeroid cream, I have no idea why though.
Anyways, I don't mind them that much, but everynow and again some snotty english prof walks by, and like some KGB looks over me shoulder and is all "ahh yess mister stanislaw, it seems to me that you are vieing someinteresting content here, hmmmm, have you read the calender about acedemic honesty? I think you could use a review, hmmm, is this a chat site...hmmm shouldn't you be doing something more productive, hmmmm"
And I always go into about a ten minut tirade about technophobic people, google ads, word analysis, and the merits of information sharing, and how the world would be a nicer place if everyone learned to live with technology!
I'll skip that part, because...well it'd take a while.
But hey, so long as there is no membership dues, I dinna mind an add or two. :D

I got Firefox yesterday. I LOVE IT! It reminds me of a tabbed IE. It's so fast too. Opera feels so slow compaired to Firefox. When I get home today i'm going to download Thurnderbird and try to get my email to work on it. I don't understand how to get email working on those programs. I like the netscape email application it setup easy, but it's slow to recieve mail. Mail takes a loooong time on Netscape. So now I use gmail through Google. I hope it will work with Thunderbird. :)

That's me too I keep re-adding my bookmarks. I just need to settle on a browser. If Microsoft would just make IE tabbed I wouldn't have that problem.

Plus the text ads here take less bandwidth than a single post, so there is no bandwidth excuse. Not to mention that bandwidth nowadays is cheap. I agree that none of the ads seen here is a problem. Besides, this is one of the sites I have "whitelisted" in my Adblocker (which is something I do with the good sites).
I do have problems with bandwidth elsewhere, though. I'm still a modem jockey, you see. A fast connection is unavailable where I live (too far from the city), and bandwidth is definitely an issue. When popups and banners loaded with bloated technicolour extravaganzas start filling the screen I find myself at a standstill. That is not right either, and is the reason to why I switched to Firefox in the first place. As it turned out, it was also the best browser I have tried thus far.

I don't get banner ads anymore. The moment I click on any forum for a second the text banner ads appear, and then a strip of some other advertisement comes over it saying -- Congratulations you have won..Click here or screen savers ads or smiley ad or even some dirty ad strips :( and those are not pop ups, they just come over the text ads. Is there something wrong in my browser? some virus?

I would suggest yes, you do a complete check on your computer for viruses and spyware etc. If it is still happening please let me know.
