In your opinion, what are his best stories?
I'm writing something along the lines of a horror/sci fi genre and am looking for inspiration in the works of Poe and Lovecraft. I've read almost everything Poe ever wrote, but Lovecraft is new to me (still, I love his style!)
What would you recommend for me to read of his/what are your favorite stories?

I would recommend reading everything by Lovecraft. Some of his stories are better than others, and a few seem like repeats, but they are all worth reading. One of m favorites is "The Shadow over Innsmouth". I haven't read all of his stories, so I have the pleasure of reading a new one from time to time.
I wrote a Lovecraftian story last year, not an aping of his style but using it as a guide. It was great fun to write, and I enjoy rereading it. It is my impression that there is more to many of the stories than the surface, but his style is magnificent in any case.

There may be other sources. According to Wikipedia all of Lovecraft's writing is now in the public domain.

I've read quite a lot of Lovecraft's stories. I love the classics like "Herbert West - Reanimator" and "The Statement of Randolph Carter" and some of his more bizarre writing like "Beyond The Wall Of Sleep". If you want to read something a bit longer go for "At The Mountains of Madness" which is a horror/sci-fi story.

"The Shadow Over Innsmouth" which is also a great movie, released as "Dagon", "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", "The Doom That Came to Sarnath", "At the Mountains of Madness", "The Dream-Quest of Unkown Kadeth", and for sheer terror, "The Dunwich Horror." There are many others I like, but these are a good foundation. The Cuthulhu Mystos is a mysterious place!

I'd add "The Colour Out Of Space" which is one of the creepiest tales I've ever read. It's been way too long since I read Lovecraft. Especially considering my avatar...
