One thing I don't understand is why Jackson got a ****load of awards for LOTR and King Kong is hardly nominated even though it's far supperior. I guess people have **** for brains, huh?

No surprise that Memoirs of a Geisha is on the board big-time for music/sound awards--John Williams is a musical GENIUS.

Brokeback mountain will win a bucket load of Oscars, including best picture. Most of Hollywood has been gay for decades but they haven't had the guts to shout about it before. I have a feeling that this will be their 'coming out' Academy Awards. It's a shame Rock Hudson and Victor Mature aren't around to see it.

I've heard it's really good but (and this is a hang up I can't get over, sorry) I can't stand watching two men kiss, so I doubt I'll see it.

I don't have a problem with it, and I haven't seen it either but I'm wondering if it is getting good reviews because of it's subjecty matter or because it's actually a good flick

It's a good movie, not as good as what the critics said about it though. Of the films I've seen and that were nominated it was the best, I have yet to see Capote which I have high expectations about, and Munich which will probably be rubish anyway.

Capote is the one I want to see, I also hear good things about Crash.

Crash is really good - it's the only one I've seen - but this is going to be BBM's year - I just know it.

Crash was a solid movie, the best films I've seen this year weren't nominated (but that doesn't really surprise me anymore). My top three this year would be Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lord of War and History of Violence.

Personally, I miss Kung Fu Hustle in the Foreign Film Category. At least it was nominated for a Golden Globe...

Nice to see a Cronenberg movie getting two nominations - has that ever happened before? (Upon browsing IMDb: "The Fly" got an Oscar for best make-up.)

Am looking forward to "Brokeback Mountain". Haven't had a chance to see it yet.

And I can't help but post this little quote (http://www.bookslut.com/blog/archives/2006_01.php#007729) about "Crash":

Otherwise, it looks like that movie Crash got a million nominations, one for original screenplay. As a public service, I reprint the script for Crash in its entirety here:

Man: I had an experience today that reminded me that racism is still very much a problem in this country.
Woman: Yes. Racism is bad.
Man: It's very bad.
Woman: Yes, it is. Very, very bad.

There. I just saved you ten bucks and two hours.

I am curious about Brokeback Mountain. Since I haven't read Crash yet, there's little chance I'll be watching the movie anytime soon.

Keira Knightley should win the best actress strictly on principle.

What, no Oscar nods for The 40 Year Old Virgin?!?

Maybe when Jim Carrey is president...

I've only seen three of any of the movies on the list, and of the "Best Movie" nominations, none. I'd still like to see "Good Night and Good Luck" and "Capote," but the movies tend to be in and out of the theater in a flash in this town. :( I have no opinions. The Academy invariably picks ---- movies, and I've stopped caring.

Awww, someone's in a snarky mode.

I'd link ya to a pic but I don't think such appetizers are allowed.

P.S: Cheers, man. I was mostly joking, though she isn't half bad compared to some of the others who have gotten the nod recently.

True. The Oscars have always been a joke IMO.

I've had no desire to see any of these movies although Crash is in my queue. I keep thinking that might be too emotional so it's very near the bottom. I usually like the Oscar nominations but these just left me uninterested.

I'm hoping Joaquin and Reese win for best actor and actor though. Their performances were brilliant.

Hollywood film Memoirs of a Geisha has been banned in China after coming in for criticism in the country's media. The decision to cast Chinese actresses Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li in leading roles as Japanese women has caused controversy in China.

Critics say it is insensitive because of Japan's atrocities during their occupation of China in the 1930s.

The Oscar-nominated film, based on Arthur Golden's 1997 novel, was due to be released next week.

'Negative response'

The decision follows a reported ban on Oscar favourite Brokeback Mountain, which was judged too controversial to be shown in China, where homosexuality is taboo.

Film company Sony Columbia Tristar Pictures said Memoirs of a Geisha would not be released in China "because of the negative social response to the film reflected on various media".

"We were pleased with the acceptance of the film in November and were disappointed by this decision," a spokesman for Sony Pictures Entertainment said.

Illegal copies of the film are already available in China, one of the main sources of imported pirate film DVDs in the UK. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4672840.stm

Man, what a yawnfest.

Seriously. I like that for once they actually seem to have taken care to reward quality over quantity - superduper special fx films like "King Kong", "Episode III" and "War Of The Worlds" got some technical Oscars no one cares about, and 4 of the 5 "best movie" nominees were independents. And pretty interesting/controversial (by mainstream standards) independents at that. "Crash" and "Brokeback Mountain" are two really good (if far from perfect) films, Phil Hoffman is a great actor and George Clooney's movie looks VERY interesting.

But the way they presented it, it just... are the Oscars always this dull? No big surprises, no scandals, no spontaneity, one dull clip show after another, preaching about how it's naughty to download movies... It's really too bad they can't make a better show of it, since I think it'll mean we get a backlash next year. "OK, we tried praising smart movies, now let's just give everything to the Da Vinci Code and hand Ron Howard a shopping cart to take the Oscars home in."

And the "original song" category was beyond contempt this year. THREE songs, none of which had any quality except for total and utter forgettableness.

(Plus, "A History Of Violence", last year's best film by a mile, carried home a total of... um... zero plus zero, times zero, carry the zero... zero Oscars. That's just wrong.)

It IS naughty to download movies. Duh--and at least they made a joke about it.

Would you prefer scandals? Like the Super Bowl halftime show two years ago? Some of us like a smooth show, thanks very much.

Yes, they did. One joke and two long speeches about how movie theatres=good, DVD=bad, downloading=evil. I appreciate the effort, but couldn't they save the editorials for the other 364 days?

Superbowl... was that where Michael Jackson's sister showed her breast for 1/100th of a second, which somehow was a big deal? No, that's not what I'm talking about. Just something out of the ordinary, someone looking like they're actually having fun, some thank-you speech that isn't just "I love you Mom, I wanna thank my producer, God bless the academy", some presentations that don't sound like they're reciting straight off the teleprompter... These are actors and they can't even present an award convincingly? Mind you, George Clooney and that South African guy gave good speeches, and Lily Tomlin's and Meryl Streep's introduction of Robert Altman was a hoot and a half. I liked Jon Stewart too. Maybe I'm just a little grumpy because I've been up all night, Cronenberg walked away empty-handed again and the only thing keeping my eyelids open is massive doses of caffeine. Overall I guess it was pretty good, just... predictable. There's such a thing as TOO smooth, IMO.

RobinHood3000
03-06-2006, 03:35 PM
Grumpiness I can understand. And the reason I don't like the Superbowl incident was because "wardrobe malfunction" has for some reason become a critical part of pop culture lexicon (why???). Precisely the thing that makes it a scandal is because people make a massive deal out of it by reading symbolic implications into it (decay of Western society and/or another reason why them kids shouldn't be listening to that hippety-hoppety music).

I rarely go to the movies and I know nothing at all about Hollywood or the acters and actresses, nothing. I am a total loser dud. I wish I could join you in this but hey it is nice to see you guys, you are SO SPECIAL.
Beer I love that saying Yawnfest. I can just see it, a sea of openmouthed people(don't they know it isn't polite to not cover the mouth) sitting in chairs just taking up space. And the next day the headlines read "Yawnfest causes earthquake of excitement"...

>Yup, one is a movie director and one a producer, and no I'm not telling who.

You don't have to tell who, just pointing them in the direction of my novel would suffice - LOL!

I have a sold screenplay writer currently working with me. Personally I don't know if his name is really Joe Shmoe or John Doe, but if he helps me deliver and I see my name in the credits with a modicum of financial compensation I can die a happy woman.
