Has anyone here read any of M R James' classic short stories? I can think of no other short story writer who has such style and economy of words. My favourite stories of his are Canon Alberic's Scrapbook, "Oh Whistle And I'll Come to You My Lad", Casting the Runes and The Treasure of Abbot Thomas.
Montague Rhodes James constructed his short stories for small audiences at around Christmas time in his Kings College, Cambridge rooms for a select group of scholars and students. It is, in my opinion, this oral quality of his work that makes him so readable and his stories so mesmerising. Below are links to these stories:
