"The Party" is the name of the "Party". The leader is Big Brother and if this helps, the basic idea or philosophy behind it is called "Inglish" (correct way to say it is English but due to Newspeak....) Socialism or Ingsoc.

Lexus, The "Party" in the book, does not actually have a name (if that's what you were asking)

Here is a little information from this website:
http://www.novelguide.com/1984/themeanalysis.html

The Party is a totalitarian government. Neither the Outer Party nor the proles (proletariat) have any influence on the direction of their country or the rules that govern their lives. The Inner Party manipulates the media and infiltrates citizens’ private lives to gain complete control over every aspect of human existence, including love and sex. When the propaganda, deprivation, and rigid guidelines fail to convert someone to Party doctrine (INGSOC), the government uses torture to brainwash citizens. The fact that the Party must turn Winston into a walking zombie to finally crush his inner-revolt, reveals the Party’s ultimate frailty. Since the principles of INGSOC fail to inspire thinking people like Winston, the Party has no choice but to use extreme force and coercion to stay in power. Orwell calls upon his readers to recognize the evil and frailty of the Party and fight to prevent the spread of totalitarianism. While Orwell does not advocate for a specific alternative system, undercurrents of Socialism, Democracy, and Capitalism pervade.

I hope it gives you a little guidence.

The fact in point is that the part is most related to (by comperison to the modern world) The USA and the British.

I'm sure if you scan the hundreds of comments already posted throughout the 1984 section of this forum, you will find exactly what you need..... if not

Google: "Geroge Orwell - 1984 - Sparknotes"

If there is anything very specific that you need and are unable to find, then ask.

the background, as in the political background, or historical background:

historical: post-revolution UK.
political: a sort of near-stalanistic communist dictatorship.

I think you'll find the way the party controls the people is basically through fear - they have microphones and cameras everywhere. The people know they are being monitered constantly, and therefore cannot rebel (even in thoughts or dreams) because "Big Brother is Watching You". Keeping the citizens completely paralysed in fear is an effective way of controlling them, and keeping them from rebelling against the party - and if they do rebel, the subsequent disappearances of those responsible act as a further deterent.

Umm...Another way they are being controlled is through the language -Newspeak. Bleaching all the colour out of the english language, and cutting it down to the bare minimum disallows people to think or speak creatively, or even express themselves. The idea is that if they can't SAY rebellious statements against the Party, they eventually won't think them. (BTW, a similar concept can be found in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale - and excellent book ^^) Co-inciding with this is the stamping out of idividuality in general. People dress the same, have basically the same jobs, and greet each other with "Comrade" (they rarely use each other's given names). Individuality = free thinking, and so by taking away their individuality, Big Brother succeeds in destroying free thought and any chance of rebellion (generally speaking, of course. Some still rebel).

Essentially, the main form of control is brainwashing, pure and simple. Rather than physically restrain the citizens (although this does happen occasionally), the party chooses to persuade/brainwash them to agree with the party's ideals and policies ("Hate Week" Classic example of a Pavlov's dog style brainwashing technique.) breaking their spirit with crappy food and no booze, minimal sex, etc, doesn't hurt the brainwashing either :D

I hope I've been helpful, it's been a while since I read the book, I've never actually studied it and I'm only a kinda ditzy little sixteen year old school girl. This was all just my opinion, but maybe it'll get you thinking ^__^

Please- your illiteracy is hurting my eyes.
The thought police is the group that acts as a 'police' force against rebellion. By using various torture methods, the quell any rebelious nature in a person.

Aurelian -Thanks for saving me a whole day of reading! haven't read 1984 for four years since high school (god i'm getting old) and needed a v. quick refresher. (ps love the liza avvy ;)!) just in case anyone else is doing an essay on dystopianism, 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin was the inspiration for 1984, so looking at that might be useful to you and interesting to look at. (also see 'Brave New World' and 'Handmaid's Tale') :D
