Does anyone know what the name of the "party" is in the book.

I'm fairly sure it's never named. It's a socialist party, and it's the the only party offered in Oceana (sp?).

Socialist? And I always thought it was fascist!

yeah the name of the party is never mentioned...
and it is just fronted as socialist, so that it looks like what they are doing is really for the good of the people, but really it is totalitarian.

Wasn't Ingsoc the name of the party? If I am not wrong, it's in the Emmanuel Goldstein`s book.

INGSOC was the philosiphy of the "party" im pretty sure cause the Eurasian equivalent of it was neo-bulshivism.

um guys (with an exeption) i think your missing the entire point of the book.
george orwell took things from totaliterians under both names the book is about totaliterianisum, the party rose to power under soculisum (ingsoc, capitalists in the historybook) but the point is that it dosent matter the few hold power over the meny and that isent good.

Are any of you studying Handmaids tale aswell? I have to compare both Atwood and 1984 Orwell for A-levels in June. I am trying to do an essay about Handmaids tale Wonder if anyone can help?
What devices does the authir use to characterise the society in which the story is set?
I have mentioned colours and the hierachal society
militaristic uniform and control/surveilance witht th eyes and stuff but not really sure what else i could say. It only has to be up to chapter 10 though and i have a lot to say about further into the novel whcih isnt a great help! I would appreciate anythnig you may have!!
