View Full Version : Valentines Day has invaded - How will you Survive the Pink?

Valentines day is comming, and the insipid
Pounding of "Buy This!" is well under way.
Every year, without fail, I go off on some Valentines day tangent.
This year is no Different.
Now, for the sake of time, and my inability to properly
repeat myself, what follows is an excerpt from an email
to a friend.......
Valentines day is about Love you fools!
It's time to put your money away and show your affection.
But, no. We live in a time of numbed hearts;
where romance is just something in books,
and love is expressed by the amount of money spent on gifts!
They take out their wallets to fill a void they don't understand,
and have no desire too. The commercials around that holiday disgust me,
Diamonds will not endear one to another.
It would only serve to placate the grubby hands of a needy woman,
who also feels that money spent denotes love. Fools!
-That tangent, happened at the beginning of January,
it seems that this year.... I got an early start.
In Monetarily decending order (yes, rich people are crazy)
I have listed what I feel to be some of the more
Thoughtless Valentines Day Gifts
- First the crazy rich people.....
House, Car, Vacation, Diamonds/Jewelry
- Now......Everybody else
Diamonds/Jewelry
Date night - (Dinner and/or movie)
Lingerie
Flowers
Chocolates
Card
And finally....
Acknowledgement of Existance
Most women, would rather not have the confections
being that a majority of them today have given into what I call
The Barbie Doll syndrome. - I'm Faaaaaat - Whatever.
Lingerie- It's only going to come off, and it's doubtfull
that she will ever wear it again. - Save your money.
Preprinted Card - Oh please, don't get me going on that one!
Date Night,- "Date Night" is not a novel idea for Valentines Day.
This should be happening At Least once a month,
Once a week would be better.
Once a year, you've... got.. problems.
Acknowledgement of Existance - Time...To...Move...On!
That brings me to Diamonds and Flowers,
And My opinion on a good gift of love.
And Yes, I went off on yet another Tangent....
Flowers -Oh Boy- Isn't it fun to watch them Die?
They are beautifull, but once picked they are
nothing more than a bit of rotting fauna.
Its life is finite, the beauty must be appreciated in
what seems like a few short days.
If you want to give a gift of love, find an interesting rock.
No not diamonds, the entire diamond thing is overated
They look like glass or plastic and just about everyone else has one.
Also, they lack individuality to the naked eye, Generic..Bits..Of..Sparkle.
Find a rock with some color in it, a pattern that is not only unique,
but eye-catching. A simple bit of quartz with it's multiple layers
of directional shifts, is a far more interesting bauble
when held up to, and compaired to the Generic diamond.
-I will not get into all the different sorts of rocks,
we are familiar with them, and they are not the point of this.
A rock, barring unfortunate grinding or the eventual wearing
down from flowing water, will be here for thousands, perhaps
millions of years after we are gone.
"Eternal",by comparison to our short lives.
In that light, the recipient is then - the Precious Finite Flower. awww.
A few minutes with a shovel, and an eye for beauty,
You could give, to the one you love,
something that has not been seen or appreciated by anybody,
and perhaps, until you came along, never even seen the light of day.
This would be a Truly Unique Gift.
Note to men...
Do Not wear your dress shoes when you give it to her.
She may not see the beauty of it,
and is now in possession of a projectile.
*Also,... never run in a strait line.
Happy Valentines Day
Ouchlander.

Hmm. I'm guessing you're a little miffed about the semi-materialistic nature of certain holidays...
I have an article I've written on this very subject that I think you might find interesting...
Ode to the Singles (Nice or Otherwise)
By RobinHood3000
Well, whaddya know? I’m back in the good ol’ Student Life section, and the lead for my article doesn’t involve having the living daylights beaten out of me. (A note here--most of my articles for my school newspaper are in the name of a persona I created called "The Social Outcast," and most of my openings involve some form of torment at the hands of others. It usually appears in the Editorial section.) Very refreshing, if I do say so myself. As is common around this time of year, emo enlistments are on the rise, FTD stock has hit its annual high, and outdoor allergens aren’t the only things in the air. Yes, all you restless younguns, ‘tis the season to be romantically spurned. “St. Valentine’s Day,” the name used by the chronically naïve, is in truth a misnomer. The true designation of February 14th, according to those who find themselves unattached upon its arrival, is Singles Awareness Day, or S.A.D.
It is by no coincidence that the acronym of the day in question represents an emotion that, if not the dominant state, is at least a very strong minority. While couples are exchanging tonsils left and right, the tragically overlooked find themselves wallowing in solitude-induced misery. Otherwise stable, the disenfranchised masses reach to such drastic alternatives to romance as crushing flowers and monopolizing the supermarket candy aisle. Just as many find themselves the recipients (to recycle an old joke) of little more than nasal congestion. In fact, your situations have become so collectively desperate that even [the name of my school newspaper] wants to wish you happy hurlings as Cupid opens fire on everyone but you. If misery loves company, then consider yourselves well-loved in the knowledge that you get to share pity this year. We understand the feeling you get when you see a couple that seems truly happy, the feeling that you are alone in the world, doomed to life without love or companionship simply because you write a column about being an outcast for…wait, where was I again? Oh, right…
Wallow no more, compatriots!! Lay down the Snickers bar and have mercy on the posies—no more shall you suffer in forsaken silence (unless you want to, but then you’re just fishing for pity). Being single is not without its benefits. Case in point: At least half of the couples around you are spending a small fortune on plants doomed to die within the week and on sweets that will inevitably inflate their waistlines, sucking the flames out of an ill-founded relationship. Therefore take solace in the fact that the jumbo-sized Hershey’s Kiss that boy is handing to his girlfriend runs him (if the current trend continues) a whole half-gallon of gas, and will bust the gal’s diet to the tune of 1050 calories. Bon appetit, Valentines, and good luck with that second job—the singles are destined to inherit the earth.
For all of you English buffs, this is the part where I’m supposed to summarize my main points, so here goes. For Singles Awareness Day, and for every one hereafter, may all of you bachelor(ette)s remember: whenever you sneeze because some inconsiderate heel brushes past you with a gross of roses in tow, some fellow single will always be there sniffling beside you. And if he looks uncannily like me, please forgive him for being such a goober in a school publication; he has difficulty resisting the urge to inject his own thoughts and opinions into his writing.

I approve of people giving live plants to one another. That seems better than a bunch of flowers. Now, if they're flowers you've picked yourself, though, it adds significantly to the "awww" factor, which will inevitably get you ... something you value significantly more than flowers.
A rock ... not so much. That's the sort of thing a little kid brings you, and you say, "aww," and then you throw it in the woods.
If it's a particularly funny card, or a blank one with photograph of a really cute animal on it, I'm for it.
Lingerie sounds like a good present to me, but then I'm 20, and the novelty of that type of stuff has yet to wear off for me. I think it would be cool to go to the lingerie store, and model the stuff for the gift-giver in question, before buying it. That way 1) you know it fits, and that it's not ugly, and 2) umm... I don't think my boyfriend would balk at the idea of spending the afternoon having lingerie modeled for him.
I, too, am particularly disapproving of the whole Valentine's Day thing. As far as gift-giving goes, though, I welcome any excuse to give other people presents. I prefer Christmas, because then I get to give lots of people presents, but any day will do. Also, this is the first Valentine's Day that I'll actually have a boyfriend, so that could contribute to my lack-of-cynicism.

What's wrong with flowers? Flowers regenerate themselves, so what's the harm? I think a dozen roses are quite beautiful. My wife and my mother have always appreciated it. I've never felt expensive jewelry was appropriate; seems like you're trying to buy the person. I usually take my wife out to a nice restaurant. What's wrong witrh that? Gee, I'm not the most romantic person in the world, but I'm not grumpy like you guys.

well since I have no husband, nor am I dating I spend thay day making sure i get gifts for as many singles or elderly or lonely people as possible i ask the children to give to others in my name instead of gifts as well as on mother's day. i only accept gifts at Christmas .
I think giving plants is quite impersonal and more for a whole family red roses and dinner is very romantic and hucking rocks you are given should be definitely done when the giver has gone then if he shows up at another time just grab a similr one from the yard,he probably can't tell. but try not to hit him in the back of the head with it as he is leaving because you think he is a flaming cheapskate. i rarely ever see pink only red on Valentine's Day.

How sweet, Rachel. You're such a dear.
I used to send a dozen roses to my wife at her job. Sending it to her job was a double thrill for her. Not only did she get the roses, but because she works at a company that's majority women she would get bragging rights with the other women.
Now on a weekend adjacent to the 14th, we go out for a nice dinner. Actually this year she's agreed to come to a NY Philharmonic (classical music) concert with me. Usually she refuses. She can't sit through a classical concert. It puts her to sleep and she feels bored to the point of pain. Last year I went to a couple of concerts by myself. This year in the spirit of St V, she's sacrificing.

Here's a Valentine's poem of my own:
Roses are red. (Sometimes)
Violets are...erm...well, violet!
This doesn't rhyme (or even scan very well)
But I love you anyway, take it or leave it.

A friend just sent me these, they are from a newspaper contest or something of that ilk. I was going to post them in the joke thread, but here seemd suitable.
"Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss,
But I only slept with you, because I was pissed.
I thought that I could love no other
Until, that is, I met your brother.
Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you,
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head
Of loving beauty you float with grace
If only you could hide your face.
Kind, intelligent, loving and hot;
This describes everything you are not.
My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you screwed up my life.
My love, you take my breath away.
What have you stepped in to smell this way?
What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime."

I would love to come. But I'll have to wear a bag over my head from embarrasment and a sack over the rest of me. But I'll cut out a mouth and eyes and we can still take tea. I wish I could live forever in England, well except when I am in Jerusalem.
England forever!
Oh by the way do either of you cook well? I mean what will we be having at tea time?
what shall I bring?
Willow can cook just about anything so that would be a help.
And Virgil can pick out the wine. I don't usually imbibe for the sake of the street(many of them are alchoholics or druggies so I need to be an example) but I will have a sip.
Mind you the only time I really drank anything was when my brother visited and I instantly was well not me. I thought the door to the pub was gone and I actually made my way over to another table and told the people not to panic. As I understand it that cracked everybody up and they were patting me on the head. My brother came and picked me up in his arms and carried me out. He said I called out to everyone as we were leaving "oh thank God the door is back. It's a miracle) I got a wild burst of applause.
And now you see the other reason I don't drink!!

A supermarket chain is selling 8p Valentine's cards to ensure even the most cost-conscious Casanovas will have "nowhere to hide".
Asda says the "economy" card - in the retailer's Smart Price range colours of black, white and red - is the cheapest on the market.
"Romance is not dead - it is being done on a shoestring," a spokeswoman said.
The card was launched after 30% of 2,000 people surveyed by Flora called Valentine's Day "too commercial".
"We have got all the luxury cards, chocs and flowers - but wanted to come up with something that gave the fellows absolutely nowhere to hide when it came to sending a Valentine's card," the spokeswoman added.
Small gestures
The Flora online "spread the love" survey, conducted in January by Tickbox.net, indicates 72% of British people believe Valentine's Day has "lost that loving feeling".
It is "loved" by 8% - but 28% of those who do not like the day will buy a card anyway, the survey suggests.
Out of every 20 women, 19 prefer small gestures throughout the year to a Valentine's Day gift, it indicates.

I'm with Higley. This is the first Valentine's day I've had a "significant other," but even when I didn't, I've never understood how bitter some people can get. Sure, chuckle and say it's silly, because it is, but so are all the most fun things in life. It's a day to acknowledge that "love is nice." 'Cause it is. If it doesn't apply to you, give a flower to your mom. Everyone has someone they love, and it's one more excuse to celebrate. Any excuse for chocolate is a good excuse. My boss gave me a cupcake. :D

Well, a person we know posted this in another forum(it was a forum based on Tolkien's creation). She had made it herself as a Valentine's day mailbox for her class. She had got tired from all the pink so this is what she made:

It is very nice. How thoughtful of her to create a mailbox for her class.

Too much of pink over here that it is pissing me off. But the brighter side is they are showing old classical Pakistani songs on the telivision. And it has been ages since I sat in front of this telivision for whole solid two hours.

Oh, Pensive! funny, funny. What is the deal with everyone hating pinK????
It's the color of cherry blossoms, some sunsets and bunny noses.
I shall dress from head to toe in pink today! (not really, but I might wear a pink tee with my jeans in honor of love, romance and the existence of love on our otherwise poor cold blue pebble.)

Imagine the world going pink! Pink sun. Pink moon. Pink trees. Pink flowers. Pink computer. Even pink eatables. It can drive one crazy, and this is what is happening to me. On the telivision, they are showing pink and red hearts. People wearing red or pink. People talking about red or pink. People acting red and pink (with all blushes and excitement on the talk of Valentine)!
I feel fed-up with this. It seems as if there is no other colour in the world than pink.
Ummm...but maybe I am feeling this because I had a really bad time.....

Pink moon.
I saw it written and I saw it say
Pink moon is on its way
And none of you stand so tall
Pink moon gonna get you all
Its a pink moon
Its a pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon.

I found an interesting article, (http://www.thestar.com/News/article/181159) thought it apropo to Valentine's Day, and mentioned it in my blog :) (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/blogs/viewblog.php?entry=398&userid=2229)
I love hot pink flowers but would never wear any pink clothes :p
what a weird word, say it over and over again and it sounds insane

No. It can't be the pink moon. Actually, what the poem predicted has been proved wrong now that my friend has reached the pink moon and has got it back into the original beautiful moon-ish moon. :D

Perhaps, that is the reason why I spent my last three hours watching telivision. :p Shows were fun. Songs were good. There was a little to critisize.
Am having more of a TV Day than a VT Day, but it is more fun, I mean to have a TV Day after quite a long time! :D

Me too. They are showing movies, I saw 'When Harry Met Sally' and now I am watching 'Bridget Jones Diary'
TV is our Valentine today, it seems. Atleast, I can switch it on or off as I like :p :D
My boss gave us an off today and she didnt know none of us has a valentine , but it doesnt matter, when everyone around you is alike, it doesnt feel bad....
And, oh, I am not sooo fond of pink either. :p Its just another colour :p

Yes, there is no need to feel bad for not having a Valentine. A poet once said:
Zamanay mein dukh aur bhi hein mohabbat kay siwa
Chahte aur bhi hain wasal ki chahat kay siwa?
:p :D
Oh and I could not watch the old Punjabi movie that was to come on our telivision last night. What a pity, I was feeling so sleepy that I went to bed early.
But still I got to listen to old songs! :D
