Don't people engage in hypnotic activities with intentions of personal ambition? To subject anothers will to ones own in the hopes of personal gain?
I wish I could be hypnotic. :alien:

Ta-da!
New signature!
Comes from Andres Ehin, and is translated.
But it reflects how we feel about certain things so it has replaced the fs lines.
deep underground live
birds
earthy birds
if one washed them
a cornflower-coloured plumage
would start to shine
these birds are
stag-beetle-swallows
and deep-blue mole-eagles
with these birds
Estonians play Indians
Indians plays Estonians
those birds allow
only indigenous people
to twiddle with their sky-coloured feathers
we, Estonians and Indians, come
from the land of three-coloured dogs
and underground birds
but where are we going?

New signature. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum is Margret Atwood's version of a dog latin phrase that's supposed to mean "don't let the bastards grind you down". Noli nothis permittere te terere is the same phrase in real latin, but I feel obligated to use Peggy's version, because she is my cousin, or so I'm told (I've never met her, but we have roughly the same hair). It's also a bit of a tribute to my friend Sarah, who has gone away to university and is feeling a bit lonely. She taught me the phrase.

Sometimes I really think I was born in the wrong time. Although I love modern stuff like computers, I am really drawn to the images of the past. I assume that if I was young back in the 1940's then I would have wished to live in the future. Anway, the new avy is from a 1940's veggie label. Yes...vegetables. :D

Here's a brief history of my avatars etc:
First I had Darth Vader and then I had some images that I made with my software (some ladybugs and a retarded/weird cartoon cat) and then I had some thumbnail of a LOTR poster that had Gandalf on it. Now I am back to another image of Darth Vader.
My first signature "Still round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate" is a Tolkien quote. That's not there anymore because I got tired of seeing it.
Now I have what Garrison Keillor says at the end of the Writers Almanac everday "Be well, do good work and keep in touch."
The thing about the honey and the bee is an aphorism that struck me as profound one day while on LitNet.
And "Man Overboard Alarm comes from the dark comedy Clay Pigeons. It's not my favorite Lester Long quote but I didn't want to put "some people just need killin'" on my signature. Also, "Barney, could you please not poke the body with a stick" and Barney's response "I was just seeing something..." I guess you'd have to be from here to understand why that is funny. It's the phrasing. It's a hick thing I guess.

Back to my first avatar. :D
I have changed my signature for a quotation by Friedrich Nietzsche:
"What else is love but understanding and rejoicing in the fact that another person lives, acts, and experiences otherwise than we do…?"
I love the idea of loving someone for his/her differences, instead of being disappointed when one discovers his/her lover is not the same (as so many people are).
"What else is love but understanding and rejoicing in the fact that another person lives, acts, and experiences otherwise than we do…?"I like it very much and strongly agree.
Hello Elizabeth, and welcome back.
I don't know why but your avatar and signature make me peaceful. I hope we'll get to know each other soon! :)

My avatar is actually an emblem created by J.R.R. Tolkien for the character of Idril but I agree it looks, well, I wouldn't have said southwestern but definitely Native American, to me it looks like more of a Plains tribe kind of thing but that's probably because those are the tribes I'm most familar with.
The picture in my profile is a fractal and the artist is Alice Kelley. Here (http://www.fractalus.com/cheshirecat/) is a site where you can see more of her work. I absolutely love her, in fact, I just bought her calendar. :D

Used to shop at Doug Silupa's Comicworld where I first acquired some 2000AD with Judge Dredd. Compared to Rochester NY (hometown) your city always looks lovely and well cared for. Hi, everybody! Jean-B, I like that painting, too and I don't like Picasso that much...only his early work. That is rather interesting, but a shame it can't be larger. I saw a film version of "Carmen" the other night with a bull-fight to start off the film. It really was sickening, but it is part of the culture, I know. Sad for the poor beast.
Well, Virgil, not sure you look like that statue, but then only going by the pictures of the doggie kissing you and other one with your tilted head. Maybe you are this guy reincarnated!:D
Ok - as for me - I recently, and finally added my avatar - it is a painting by Salvador Dali called "Pieta". I love this painting; I saw it in Philadelphia last year at the big Dali show. Truly amazing stuff. This painting was large; very impressive....not as good in postage size for my avy...oh well...
I also added a favorite painting by Howard Pyle in my Profile page of a mermaid/lover - forget the name of it. I love the composition and the moon placed just so. Pyle taught the Wyeths and was a great illustrator of adventure stories.
The drawing I put in my signature, unfortuately is way too small. It is a piece of my own artwork - a Christmas card I designed a couple of years back and had printed (worked for a printer) and is done in fine point ink. Sorry it is not seen better. Does anyone know if it can be larger? I have tried everything :crash: to make it larger. Postage size just does not make it with this picture, either.:(
From what I can see Janine that is a beautiful drawing!! Even more so since I am an unbelievably huge Tchaikovsky fan!

I didn't have a picture in my profile.:p
I like it. Is the bull going straight for the bull fighter or is the bull fighter side stepped?
I guess I was confused, Virgil. I meant the picture of you and your dog; I'm sure I've seen it floating around here somewhere.
I have no idea what's about to happen in this painting. I've stared at it and stared at it (I have a much larger copy on my wall) waiting for one of them to get it; nothing's happened yet. Could go either way, I suppose.

Yup.
It is indeed Charlie Chaplin.
I can never forget a drama (It was Ainak Wala Jinn for little children) which was played on our television some years ago, it consisted of a character very similar to that of Charlie Chaplin and he used to call himself Mr. Chaplin. It was a really funny character, always eating bananas, made me want to see the movies played by the actual Charlie. :)
But I couldn't ever come across any movie containing this what-seem-to-be-a-really-good-comedy-actor.

Tend, thanks for the compliment - just wish I could make the photo bigger - twice the size would be good. I love Tchaikovsky, too and many other composers. I especially like ballet scores. I draw ballet dancers, often..they are very expressive, fragile, graceful and passionate. After Christmas I will try to start a blog and post some of my own work - need better scans or photos first. Hoping this site inspires me to pick up the ink and pencils again.
Yes, indeed everyone is right - that is funny little Charlie Chaplin. I adore him! Anyone see "The Kid"? - and how about "City Lights"? Good choice for an avy, Taliesin!
Hey, seems everyone is changing them lately. I will change mine in a few months, too.

That is an incredible painting, sub. Virgil, I couldn't tell the difference between this bust and the previous picture you had in your profile. :D Powerful likeness.
What do you all think of my Picasso avatar? It may be the only painting that I've ever liked by Picasso: "Toros y Toreros". I began worrying that it may suggest an affinity for cruelty to animals.
Hi, Jean. I'm so not good in paintings and they only painter (and his works) that I'm willing to spend time to find out further is Dali. I tried to look the larger version of your avy in Picasso's official website but I couldn't find it.

Kathy, more than likely the person/artist designing the tiles took the designs from a copyright - free book. I have several on Art Deco. Artists all steal to some extend. Well, if you do change it I know you will find a nifty new one. You have had several I admired. If you want something like this I can look into my book and see if I can find you a nice photo....just scan a design. Those are copyright free. I actually have two books, I think, of Deco designs. Lots of greens, too - that was a popular color. I used to deal in antiques. I should use one of my antique plates as an avatar. I had thought of that awhile back.

I changed my avatar --- it's a part of a painting of the lady of shalott.
Notice the spelling of shalott. It has two t's -- not one. I misspelled it when I set up my account originally.
Now, I am very embarrased about this, especially since this was my favorite poem from the time that I was a student and actually enrolled in literature classes. So you see, I should know how to spell Shalott. My username is Shalot instead of Shalott and that irritates me. Maybe I should set up a new account. I don't know.
Anyway, I've come up with an excuse for why I mispelled Shalott. It's because I'm from the U.S.A. Now, you can take that however you want, but it's a known fact that here in a America, we sometimes alter words and their spellings.
Take the word light for example. If you order a low-fat sandwich, the spelling on the menu might say lite. All that means is that the sandwich is low in fat and carbs and calories, and a clever way to convey that meaning is to reduce the number of letters in the word light. The word has fewer letters and the consumer is getting fewer calores.
In the same way, we add letters to a word. Take also the word old. If you own a bookstore, a clever name for the bookstore might be Ye Olde Bookstore. Olde looks like a word from Old English, and if you're buying a book from the Ye Olde Bookstore, as opposed The Old Bookstore, you think you're getting something special. But if you go shopping at the old bookstore, you're getting used books that smell like someone's old cigarettes.
So there you have it --- there's my new avatar and my new excuse.
Thanks so much.

More Froud, Niamh? Nice. :)
My current avatar has a weird story to it. I wanted to make a custom shield for one of the games I play, so I took a plain celtic knot, tinted it and texturized it. It has a granite texture look to it but it really needs to be bigger in order for that to show up. Sadly, the image to use as a shield has to be 32x32 pixels and the knot looked really crummy when I made it that small. But, I think it looks pretty good as an avatar.

I do really like that avatar. Didnt you have something similar before? But more knots and it was black and white? I really liked that one too.

I don't think I would recognize any of Pensy's posts if her avatar was changed. That little blue bird is just you, somehow. :D
Niamh, yes, you have a good memory. I did have something similiar although you are correct, it was in black and white. It was also raised like a button. I hope nobody gets attached to my avy's the way we are to Pensive's. I like to change mine around too much.

I don't intend to change my signature a lot. From the day I created an account I only added the 'Das Leben ist eine Komödie, mach bitte kein Drama daraus' aphorism ('Life is a comedy, don't make a drama out of it').

Hey, would it be weird if someone changed their screen name??
At a LOTR site I used to frequent you could do just that, your user name actually stayed the same but you could change your "display name" so people would see whatever you changed it to. It was incredibly confusing, I didn't like it... although it was nice if you wanted to go incognito for a day or two. ;)

I really like what people use for their avatar and then personalize their signatures ... it gives a bit of insight into that person's personality, as they have purposely chosen these things... Hmmm, maybe that is going too deep, in anycase, it IS interesting, lol!
I really like that Faulkner quote of yours, Virgil.
I want to change my signature, but I am too lazy today, maybe tomorrow... :)

Why, thanks! :) It comes from his poem 'Ash Wednesday', but I came across it while I was reading a book I purchased about Zen quotes. I would like to be able to sit still, and achieve a small nirvana, I don't even ask for a big one heh
Like Kiz said, your quote from Faulkner is great. Has a heroic tone to it, suits ever so well in a Virgilian context ;)

I've changed my signature, appart from the inclusion of the forum rules, I've also decided to include The Great Ledger in my sig. It's a deep and profound book, that can teach someone more than just the price of a fine, for anyone who's wondering, but you'll have to read it to know it. :D
Knowing the price of your personal fine means you can bribe yourself into the great library! YAY!

Here she is....The Complete Doofus. :)
I am not quite as doofy looking because well, for one thing I have a nose. My mouth isn't quite so pursed up either and my hair is lighter...and I don't wear a red bow in it. Otherwise, I guess it is pretty close...except for the fact that it's completely different. I do have a rather vacant look in my eyes which this picture captures very well. :p

What I think is really weird about this forum is that...no one hardly ever changes their avatars and signatures. I guess it's because I came fresh out of The Tim Burton Collective when I joined this site, and EVERYONE regularly changes theirs and has themes.
So what is that all about? What makes the forums so different?
But I've changed mine a gajillion times. I think no one quite knows who I am because of that? Or at least it takes them a while to get used to my sets whenever I change them. Oh well. KEEPS YOU ALL GUESSING. That's right. Look at my username, ya lazy people! :p I honestly can't see how any of you can be so steady with your avatars and signatures.
This is my fourth DEVO themed one. :D I've been in a New Traditionalists mood lately. I need a Nu-Tra pomp. That would be so awesome.

I changed mine to an assassin's creed pic I pulled from online. I didn't put this one through photoshop, it's the only one I haven't though, but I feel ashamed.
One reason for picking it is because it has the ultimate bird flipper on it. Who would give the bird back to a guy who has one that is a knife?
