I could tell you of hundreds. But what are you looking for? Something challenging? Easy reading? Modern? Historical? Scary? Thought-provoking? Funny?

Something with an indirect religious reference, nothing super modern, not as far back as 19th century, something that deals with the human spirit. Not really into Sci-Fi
I really like Steinbeck. ;) If that helps any.
Charles Darnay

I'd suggest Les Miserables.... my favourite novel. It's fits everything you requested, except for the fact that it's 19th century. it's a fairly demanding read, but everything about it is so fantastic.

Thornton Wilder!
Read The Bridge of San Luis Rey by him. It touches on all that religion, human spirit, what-does-it-all-mean stuff without being overt about it.

Ok, then I think that you might like the following novels:
Flowers In The Attic - V. Andrews
