I have a ? In winston's room 101 why would he betray julia? Does he dilike rats so much that he would make them do it to her? She betrays him too, why would they do that to eachtoher if they both hate bigbrother and both dont like the government? Shouldnt they be in this together. If i would be in there situation i would have not betrayed my love one although there relationship was not based on love for it was based on revenge and political protest.Betrayal i dislike it! :rage:

Were winston and julia really in love, or did they just have sex?

I think they did not have a true love, if that is so, winston cheated on her (the old hooker he payed)

Winston was physically and mentally broken down. The beatings and the mind games reduced him to something that was less than the man he was before he was brought to the Ministry of Love. The people supervising his rehabilitation waited until he reached a point where he was very weak and close to becoming loyal to the party. They then presented him with his greatest fear, and allowed him to find the only way out. The only way he reasoned he could escape this torture was to try to put it off onto Julia. He did not simply say "Do it to Julia, not me!", so they would stop, he actually meant it. At that moment he would have done anything to escape the rats, including putting Julia through a painful death.
At that point, he lost the last bit of his humanity. Until then, he loved Julia unconditionally. He betrayed the person whom he loved, and from then on his feelings for her were unpure and they withered into nothingness.

He betrayed her because of how well the party did it's job. No other reason.

I believe the reason that both Winston and Julia betrayed one another is because they were never in love. Both were simply excited by their own ideas. For Winston, this was a much needed reminder of the days before him, when society was yet to be constrained sexually by Big Brother. And for Julia, her relationship with Winston was simply a chance for her to show her rebellious side. She took great pleasure from beating the system. She had no desire to overthrow the government. She simply wanted to prove to herself that she had beaten Big Brother, as they had failed to control her.

It seems as if both characters used each other to live out their own ideas. I get the impression that the person who they broke the law with was of no importance. It was the act itself which was significant.

For both characters, the relationship was never really one of love; more of a rebellious lust. And therefore, neither character had any problem betraying the other. That is how I perceive their relationship.

Winston betrays Julia because he realizes that he can never win. The Party, as it says in The Book can only be overhtrown by the proles, however, as long as the proles are ignorant they are no threat. This is why the Party doesn't police them like the Party members, who can come to "conciousness" and pose a real threat. So when Winston realizises this when he is being tortured, he sees that no matter what happens the Party will never be overthrown so he just gives in.
